I just felt like the car deserved more but all that matters is your satisfied. Like has been said, 85k isn't chump change. It could of went worse. You had the prime spot and a female bought it just like we discussed on the phone. I'll call ya today sometime and see what you're up to..

This is instant gratification.. you want a '69 pro-touring car on Friday.. you buy it Saturday and you're driving it the next week. Some people are willing to pay extra for that luxury.

Without seeing the car in person it's hard to know the quality.. if it's high then it might be in the $100k range to have someone build it. These cars up fast.

True, what Tone says below is what explains the average buyer at BJ IMO. Most there do NOT get (nor value!) what a more complete pro-touring car really is... so, no reason to minitub, no reason to add good rear suspension or aftermarket sub, bla bla bla.... this is why a simple Camaro (albeit very nice based on the pics) can fetch $100k as a "pro touring" Camaro.

Unfortunately, a lot of people do not know/are familiar with a "real" pro-touring car. They think a good set of brakes, an LSx engine and some nice low profile wheels/tires and they you go!! You got yourself a pro-touring car.:_paranoid
This car was BEYOND that, as we all know. It was a true pro-touring build.

And the car I am talking about didn't have an LSx. It has a 427 big block carbed making about 500hp. Nice motor for sure, but a motor for a $100k car? Heck no.

Hey guys. just so everyone knows. The day I started the build on that car I knew it was a Firebird and would have half the value of a Camaro. But we wanted to build it because we knew it would be beutiful, and that it was.

So when John and I decided to come here we set kill ourselves numbers, OK numbers, and really happy numbers. I was prepared to buy it back at $50k, At $60 would not be happy, but would not kill myself. And thought it would do $80k to $100. My DREAM number was only $125K. I knew being a Pontiac it would not do the big numbers some predicted. When i saw the number like $150K, $250 on different boards, I sure as hell could not say that and kill my own auction before the sale. But I thought unless it was a total fluke, I thouht $125K was the end of the world because it was a Pontiac. Pontiac guys are mostly original guys and have not embraced the car, and I knew that going in.

Sure I would be happier with more money, but I am good. Like I said, it is Firebird, not a Camaro. It served its purpose, and I am completely OK. And that money is more then enough to build another car.

I will say this was a 100 things to do before you die experiance. When you roll up there you are at the mercy of the audience, like being in front a jury! One of the most exciting things I ever have ever done.

I honestly believe I put it in the right atmosphere at the right time (considering current times) and I believe it brought the most money it would, and I do not have to spend 2 years advertising it.

In closing, I am heading home Tuesday and will try to buy a Cobra (killer replica) with a 427 side oiler in it to take to Scottssdale. So yes, I am happy and have the feaver now.

So please, no pitty party. I am just fine.

Good stuff Frank. I too wanna just have that adrenaline rush of selling a car at BJ someday cuz it would be an amazing rush and can go either way!

Good post Frank!

It explains a lot to me -- not that you owed anyone an explanation... But you do always wonder if a guy "understands" that he's building a car that might not hit the market "right" (ala a Firebird or a Nash etc)... so I'm happy - IMPRESSED even - that you knew what you were doing going in.

Someone said this was a REAL pro-touring car... I think they were discussing your build... (I didn't go back to read the whole thing before I posted this). When I saw the car roll the blocks - I thought "man, that's like a CUSTOM".... as it was pretty slick... What I can say is, that I saw QUALITY.

Glad it worked out okay for you!

Yea, I think it would be a blast.. then I would miss my car.. and there's always the fear factor.. lol

I wonder if they would just let me drive it over the block for fun.. lol

Vegas69 10-11-2009 09:30 PM

I was pretty gun ho about the idea of sending mine across someday until I went to Barrett Jackson live. I doubt I sell this car but don't think I have the stones to do it. The money is one factor but your getting stiffed twice if things don't go well. You lost your butt and car.

Yep, but it would be a lot less tense if you were financially in a position where it didn't really mean much either way. Kinda like a really nice bonus if it goes big, or just a little mental letdown if it doesn't.

I'm sure with your pull Steve, you could pull some strings ;)

I'm glad to hear you're good with it all Frank.

I understand a little better now how YOU saw the car and how it did what you needed it to do for personal and business purposes.

I can't wait to see what comes next!!

I would run your car fearlessly and expect $135K+ It has all the right parts in all the right places AFTER you finish the A/C

GregWeld 10-12-2009 09:45 AM

Here's the real issue watching a NICE CAR go LOW...

A rising tide - floats all boats... so we all want to see similar cars to what we have double every week... it makes us feel good.

What we don't want to see is that they sell for "what we have in them"... That makes us feel bad.

All my life - it was "expected" that you'd get back HALF of what you put into a car... It was also expected that you'd buy a house - make 30 years of payments and finally own it when you retire. The goal being to not have any out go at retirement - so that you could actually retire on "less".

When our "expectations" get flipped upside-down - we're due for a "correction" in our thought process.

SO... IMHO:

Don't build a car you can't afford to see go away for about half what you have in it. Because that has been the "norm" for most of the time.

Don't take out a 30 year mortgage when you're 50 years old... it just won't work out real well for you.

If you're a grocery store clerk... you are not going to get rich flipping stocks or houses. By the time you're doing it... the really rich guys have cashed out and are running for the hills.

Which wheels? :unibrow: We'd have to freshen it up first as well. It's got a few chips in the paint. It's not going anywhere for quite some time if ever.

Want to "get your moneys worth"?

Drive it...... like you stole it!

I always figure the car companies put side windows in --- so I could see where I was going!

buickfunnycar.com 10-12-2009 10:28 AM

Car proved to be a shade too over the top, even for Las Vegas...
Still,a world record for a Firebird, you gotta be happy with that.

I agree Todd' black 69 is a great car for BJ and that buying pool. Big horse carbed stroker big block seems to be valued as just as much as some new tech LSx, injected, bla bla bla motor that costs 2-3x more.

Well, actually John and Frank did wisely "bling" up a few of the "dull" areas on the Nova specifically for the target audience. ;)

It's funny to read those comments from one of the candidates for the treasured 'King of No Bling' award ...

Funny thing is when my dad and I were watching BJ Vegas this weekend and I told him I was considering putting mine in it at some point in time, he said why don't you blacken that intercooler in front of your radiator? I said dammit dad, that's exactly what Jody and a bunch of other guys said! And I agree it fits better with my theme as it sits now, which is less blingy, but the opposite seems to really bring the dollars at BJ..... When is the King of No Bling award going to be announced? That sounds like a good time! :D

It's at SEMA this year as always. You'll need to staple a big picture of your car to a piece of 1 x 2 and then go picket the Dub Expo. Someone will tap you on the shoulder if you win.

Just a side note

When Mike Lajoy speaks, I want to punch him in the face.
When does his contract end? Will it ever end? The king of "I don't know what I'm talking about, but I'm still talking". One good way to make Barrett more enjoyable, take the microphone away from Mike Lajoy.
