Finally, the car is down on the ground.:) Just checking pinion angle and to see if the wheels will work from my last car.
http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07010.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07011.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSC07013-1.jpg I kind of like the old school look but don't want the tires sticking out to far. What do you think of the rears:question: I will probably go with a little less width on the next set of tires if I keep these on the car. I also have a set of RallyII's in 15". New rims and tires are not in the budget right now so I have to work with what I have. |
The tires and wheels look great. It's refreshing to see an old school look around here. Seeing way to many 18"-20" wheels on classic muscle these days.

J/K, I sold them to him, so gotta convince him it was still a great deal LOL! BTW, lemme know if you want to sell me my heads back, I'm ready to switch back to gas, this E85 stuff is getting annoying. Want some milled 670's? ;) I like the look of the Weld's on there, they don't stick out too far, considering that is the look most guys went for with that set-up. I'd pull out your Rally's and order up the stencil kit, repaint them, polish the trim rings and see what you like better. I still think that my car looked just as good the day I rolled it home from the paint booth on the 14" rallye's as it does with the 18's on it. Oh yeah, great work BTW, I know what it's like to deal with engines by yourself in two car garages in the middle of winter! |
Still working on the car. Had a few set backs. Still working on the rear pinion angle. I want to make sure it is real close before welding it solid. I pulled the rear end apart and noticed that both axles were shot. Ordered up a set of axles, bearings, seals, and wheel studs. Wasn't really in the budget. Oh well!!

I didn't like how the new sway bar mounted to the frame. With the bigger bar the brackets and bushings did not line up very well. I also thought that some spirited driving might pull the small bolts out of the threaded frame holes. I ended up using one of the original holes and drilling a new one. I also went up one bolt size. This is what I ended up with. I took a grade eight bolt and welded on a tab. I then dropped the bolt through the hole inside the frame. The tab hits the frame and keeps it from spinning. I decided I wanted the front bushings to have grease zerks to help with any possible squeaking. I drilled holes and tapped them for the new fittings.

My axles came a few months ago. I borrowed a ball joint tool to install the studs.
http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07021.jpg Started to mock up my rear brakes. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07027.jpg |
Lookin' good!

Started on the front end steering. All new Moog parts, Speed Tech tie rod sleeves, and a newer steering box.
http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07055.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07054.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07058.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07059.jpg |
My first car that I restored was a 2nd gen Camaro and most of the OER parts did not fit very well. I was thinking that the 1st gen parts would be better. LOL RIGHT!!
I spent around five hours installing the dash. It would not pull down corrrectly with the original four studs. So I had to drill holes in my new dash and very carefully drill holes in the dash pad. I cut a drill bit down so I could not drill through the dash pad. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07062.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07063.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07065.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07064.jpg |
I also did some work on the exhaust.
Installed the long branch manifolds. Installed sub-frame connectors. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07056.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07059.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07061.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07132.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07133.jpg |
On my second try I finally have some rims that I am very happy with. It's still amazes me how many people will tell you that you can fit a 9.5 rim in the back of these cars. You can if you want a 4x4 look with out tubbing it. LOL I have 7" wide up front and 8" wide in the back. I had to get my BS dead on and be careful with how wide I went on the rear tires. It's a tight fit but I stuck a 255-45 in the back. I have plans to use the stock PMD center caps which I think will make the rims look great. IMHO.

I was not looking forward to painting the upper dash, lower dash, glove box,ash tray, and other interior panels that needed a low gloss black paint. I had never sprayed a low gloss color before. It came out pretty good but I could have used some reducer which I did not have on hand. These pictures are just in DP90 a black primer.

Updates. It looks like it has been a while since I have posted anything new.
Started on the steering column. The turn signal switch was cracked in a few spots and the lower non tilt bearing was bad. I purchased a new switch from Classic which required changing over the terminal connection. I then had to change it again with the classic update wiring kit. The lower non tilt bearing is not produced unless you want to purchase a kit. Which was a little pricey being that I only needed a fifteen dollar bearing. I purchased a 69 lower non tilt bearing and used a little sanding drum to open up the lower plastic sleeve. Worked like a champ. Here's the before picture of the column. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07172.jpg New turn signal switch. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07180.jpg Not that you can see what I did but this is the 69 lower bearing installed. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07183.jpg Have a friend who started doing powder coating. We sprayed a satin black on the column. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07179.jpg And back together. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07185.jpg |
The doors were next. I'm not sure how it happens but I always pick the worst days in the winter to do sandblasting. One of the doors had previous damage. I had to weld up all of the dent puller holes. There was just a little rust in the bottom corner also. Cut a new patch and it was all fixed.
http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07168.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07167.jpg All sand blasted and welded up. Ready for primer. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07166.jpg |
The door internals were pretty dirty and needed a good cleaning.
Started with the latches. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07186.jpg The passenger side door did not always work correctly. After getting all of the 1968 to present grime off of them I noticed a missing spring. Not knowing that you could buy them I made one out of a throttle return spring. Works good so far. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07187.jpg All cleaned up,repaired and ready to install. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07188.jpg Next up were the door hinges. The bushings were still fairly tight but the heads had broke off most of them. Some of the bushings were made of plastic. Never seen that before. Here is whats left of the pins, bushings, and detents. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07191.jpg Three of the four hinges assembled. Need two more stock size bushings. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07192.jpg All taken back apart. Sand blasted and primed. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07197.jpg |
New gas tank painted 2008 Pontiac silver and black powder coated straps.
http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07198.jpg Nice shot of the tank back in the car. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07238.jpg |
I had some problems installing an oil filter on my car. I purchased the Pontiac long branch manifolds and the oil filter adapter. What I did not know is that the oil filter housing was incorrect for my car. I had a big body housing. The one painted blue is the incorrect part.
http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07218.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07217.jpg The correct part number if anyone is interested. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07219.jpg Lot's of small things installed. New Lokar throttle cable and bracket. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07232.jpg New Taylor wires. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07232.jpg Gas pedal,Brake pedal, steering column and wiring started. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07235.jpg New 19.5 flex fan and belts. Not real exciting but getting closer to hitting the key. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07234.jpg |
Next up was the parking brake assembly.
It seems they forgot to paint part of it from the factory. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07222.jpg New pedals, handle, and bushings. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07224.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07225.jpg Installed one of the power steering lines. Someone noted that I might have it on wrong. I will try and find a picture but I think it can only go on one way. Also bolted on my CPP master cyliner/power booster combo. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07233.jpg |
I had some parts powder coated. I tried to stay with satin black on everything but had to use some high gloss silver after seeing some other parts coated.
http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07245.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07248.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07249.jpg |

Finally picked out some guages. I'm pretty happy with the quality so far. I wanted more of a stock look.
http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07259.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07262.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07261.jpg Sending unit for the transmission. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07260.jpg I still need to paint the bezel but at least you can see how they fit in the stock position. http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07263.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07264.jpg |
I had some free time to work in the trunk area. I did not want to wire up the back half of the car until I had the trunk in spatter paint.
Before http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07266.jpg After http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07267.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07268.jpg http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSC07269.jpg I did have some problems with the clear top coat paint. I could not keep the entire trunk from getting overspray. I would spray one side down and then when I would paint either the back or the other side all of the overspray would just swirl inside the trunk leaving a haze over what I had just painted. I ended up using some oil based poly clear and gave it all one coat with a brush. It was a satin clear but it has a little more shine than what came out of the can. |

Those pieces in the bottom pic go over the rockers on the inside of the car. They fit together to cover over the tract that the wire harness runs in - the carpet goes over them when all said and done. MAN...this car is looking sweet! |
by the way - just wait until you put that front bumper together!
I have some nice pictures if you need them of the back side. Then...get your buddies over to align it. I got ours on - but I'm waiting on some fellows to come help hold it in place to get proper adjustment. |

Thanks for the pics, it appears I just happen to have a set of those lying around.

Looking sweet, nice progress. How long did it take to get those guages?

Thanks for the compliments, progress has been slow but I'm getting the itch to work on it again. Time, money and family always come first. LOL |
I painted the bezel in a satin black a few days ago. I also had some time to get some more wiring done on the guages. It's almost complete. I just need to hook up the 12+ ignition,12+ lights and a common ground. But, I need to look into where the power comes from for the speedo and console light. I did not have enough time to look into the other AAW wire packets. I had to have a sneek peek at how they were going to look.:D
