Making a profit on a " badass " car is easier said than done. I have always justified spending money, and I can be cheap, tying it up. If I can come close to breaking even when it sells, then I'm happy. |
Scott --- Well said. I'm thinking that this might be the last year I watch any of it on TV... it's become boring. Way too many commercials.... and frankly - a LOT of erroneous information.
There was no - none - zip - "buzz" this year at BJ... I'm not sure if the weather played a part in that or not. And here's another observation. 2 years ago - I wanted to buy some pieces of the stuff that a couple outfits do - restored old gas pumps - and misc shop pieces. They're top notch - and they get top notch prices. Most of them where sold on the FIRST DAY of BJ... so I was out of luck on a couple things I would have bought. THIS YEAR --- I'm looking at the stuff SATURDAY afternoon - and very little was tagged SOLD.... most of it's going to go home with the vendor. HUGE DIFFERENCE.... just HUGE. Ditto most of the "art". In years past - you had to be pretty fast and not drool too long or the piece you wanted was gone... this year - you could still buy all of it - anything you wanted - and barter on the price too! |

I actually watch about 10 hours in 15 minutes. |

That's how we watch it. Just hold fast forward. But you have to be careful. It's easy to completely miss the 3 seconds of coverage they give some cars. |

I would litterally be like two cars and then commercials. One time I swear it was ONE CAR before the next commercial break. DVR is the ONLY way to watch this. |

Having attended BJ and RS for the past 4 years start to finish...I can tell you that attendance was definitely down. We went to Pavillions on Saturday about noon...then headed over to BJ at about 2pm.
Last year at 2pm...there wasn't a parking place to be had anywhere near BJ (even if you had a parking pass like I did)... This year, when I left at 5:30pm on Saturday night, there were still public parking spaces available right across from the main tent...and there were still seats available in the bidders area (not so last year...or the years prior). Was it the weather...the economy...or a bit of both? I hear that Greg got a good deal on some lighting:D |
Bruce you said A now you have to say B what did Greg do?

On a reserve auction, if the reserve isn't met, the last bid means nothing. |

LOL...it is much better in person. If you haven't been there...you've definitely missed out. Everyone should attend at least once. Though, there are tons of armchair quarterbacks that have never been to these auctions but still have nothing good to say about the auctions. They base their opinions on.....what? Either way...sitting there in person takes it to a whole different level...but it's really LOUD! |
I had to step out for dinner and what not... i just ended up Twittering the event. :)
I tried to stick around the house and watch... but the commercials were killing me. I was also getting frustrated because my fantasy bids were always 10-25k too high!! |
Yeah, Barrett is the only game in town. 95% of what you see at the NO RESERVE auctions is bogus or shill bidding. That is why you often see cars bid to a bid and sell later for much less. I have run cars though reserve auctions and there are bids, bids, bids, and I am on stage watching, and I'll be damned if I see them.
We never shill bid our stuff, don't have to. All you need to do is tell the auctioneer not to let it die on the stage, and they will run it close to what you want and let it eat. If you want to sell the car, you take it to Barrett. It may not bring what you hope it will bring, but you will sell it. |

While I think the prices were "low to middlin" - I agree with Frank when he says if you want to sell your car - this is the place to be. There are real buyers - and the cars get sold. Frankly -- (not Frank) -- everybody talks about what something or other is "worth" -- and an auction like this tells you EXACTLY what it's worth... whatever two other guys are willing to pay for it. It's not worth a nickel more. There are lots and lots of "venues" to sell cars -- and the really high dollar builds are well known and well documented - and generally the "world" knows when they're for sale and what the seller is asking.... and the only way they finally make it to BJ or RM etc is because nobody was willing to step up and buy them for what the seller was asking. That doesn't mean that someone might pay MORE than that at an auction - but if they do you're just LUCKY! On the plane home - I pulled out Hot Rod magazine - noticed that a previous HUGE buyer at BJ et al - was forced to sell most all of his 210 car collection - and the one they showed came to mind - a Chevelle - X race car - 61 miles on it - all 1/4 at a time - he had bought at BJ in 2006 -- 1.2 MILLION -- sold at a Peterson auction for 240 thousand.... you all know - that the 240 thousand was way more than any of us would have paid for it... so that was what it was really worth. El Stupido that paid 1.2 million for it... Oh well.... Made me think of the GM BUS - that sold for 4 million - Let's take a guess what that was/is really "worth" today. BTW -- I fully understand that most can not go to these events - vacation time - cost - whatever... and this is only the second time I've ever gone.. ditto SEMA... so I'm just poking people when I say "I was there in person".... because I normally am hunkered around the tube at home drooling and wishin'. BUT DO put it on your to do list -- you really would like it. Oh - and bring a d#*n rain coat and boots!!! |
