when i looked at the transaxle, I think the installed length needed the front end extending a little, depends or what radiator setup you use

Been busy with health and am due for surgery this Wednesday. I'm getting a pain pump implanted in my side to help with chronic pain from pancreatitis. I decided to do an inventory on everything to see what I'm missing. Quality of the subframe is incredible. Really cool piece. Only thing I'm missing are new CV joints, driveshafts and all new poly bushings. Also the cable to put the Qaife reverse unit in reverse.

Very cool project Dane. I can't wait to see it go together and hear how it runs. Good luck with the surgery too. I hope the pump helps you out.

Any update on this? I have seen a few posts about your health and I am assuming that is why an update has not been made. If so here's to a speedy recovery.

This project has really got me intriged. My wife wants a Mini, so maybe I can get the best of both worlds with something like this.

This project has really got me intriged. My wife wants a Mini, so maybe I can get the best of both worlds with something like this.

Its starting this week or next. Been daily driving it with the stock motor. I got it up to 94mph gps verified in 4th gear. No surprise, the header cracked at one of the welds after all the driving I've put it through

All my friends that offered their help and lifts for the projects backed out so I'm sending it down to Heritage Garage which is one of the top mini restoration shops in the nation.

Going to appraise the car, and if its worth the swap, we'll start. If not, I'll sell it for what I paid and break even, and start with a shell, using all carbon fiber parts to lighten it up and likely go british racing green with all MK1 parts and make it a sleeper. A guy on the mini forums got his down to 874lbs with gas. 179whp.... Scary fast.

Should make 40-50hp around town under 7000rpm, rev it higher and it makes big power.

In the meantime, I need to get the car down to orange county somehow. AAA towing perhaps.

I had a pain pump implanted in my abdomen for chronic pancreatitis/pain. It has a remote control and a catheter that goes to my spine. I no longer have to take oral meds and am a LOT safer driving. No more loopyness or groggyness at all.

The pump is helping a lot, but it still needs further adjustment. Thanks for the concern.

First test drive was today. Working out some final issues. This is going to be my daily driver if I can stand it. The R1 makes 170whp with a 11,500 redline. 1300lb car. Its scary. Lights up in 3rd and even in 4th.

Enjoy!

Trying! I got a medtronic pain pump to help with the pain. Its like I've got NOS inside my gut!

http://lh5.ggpht.com/__OT3YJ9o9Ao/TD...0/IMG_4165.jpg

apologies for having to show my gut!

Even came with a remote to dose myself.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/__OT3YJ9o9Ao/S7...0/IMG_5294.JPG

Too bad it doesnt relieve all the pain. I still have 2-3 bad days a week where I can't leave the house. Gonna have this thing for life so I'm just trying to get it adjusted.

Wish it would improve my laptimes

89 RS 08-04-2010 08:58 PM

That car is freakin' cool Dane! Thing looks extremely quick. Take care of yourself man, good to hear you got the pain pump...hopefully it will help ya.

Pretty cool build Dane.
Sorry about your health issues. Stay strong!

Evan Iroc-Z 08-05-2010 01:05 PM

I am overly jealous. I would love to have you stable of cars, let alone a daily driver like that. It looks to be a ton of fun. I am glad to see it completed.

Good luck with your health! I have major back problems and do not wish that pain on anyone. I could not imagine having a pain pump and still having pain. You are a real trooper!

rlplive 09-10-2010 04:55 PM

Wicked man, what happened to Frank? Congrats on the pain pump helping a bit.

he died a week before his first birthday :(

rogue 09-10-2010 05:42 PM

Been daily driving it. First second and third are useless. I even got the front to start lighting them up in 4th the other day on the freeway. Mpg is around 38mpg. Overall impressions is that its unruly, raw power, lots of torque steer, very difficult to get used to driving sequential, and a bit hard to start on a steep incline.

Played with a 997 porsche the other day and he was surprised to say the least.

So far so good. Its a long learning process to find what works and what doesn't. Thanks!

Pain is hell. Thanks for the kind words. Luckily any time I go somewhere I have fun doing so. The mini is a real crowd pleaser anywhere it goes. People come out of businesses

Track Junky 09-10-2010 07:11 PM

Sorry to hear about your health issues. I had a couple of surgeries about 6 months ago and lost 30 lbs. Sure is hell dealing with pain.

That little car of yours looks like it's fun as hell to drive. Have fun!! Lookin' forward to seeing you at Buttonwillow.

Dude. What a fun fargin car.

That thing is just freakin' cool.

MSTSFabbed 09-15-2010 05:05 PM

Saweeeeet. Ok so what are your impressions of that motor in that/any car? Reason I ask is were thinking seriously about an 06 R1 midmounted in a 74 Beetle, thats as stripped as we can get it. Does that transmission range work farily well on the street in a car? What kind of fuel tank did you end up running to deal with the high pressure efi?
Thanks and Man that car is awesome!!

MSTSFabbed 09-15-2010 05:05 PM

Oh and whats your final weight on that car?

rogue 09-15-2010 10:32 PM

Went to the beach today and detailed the car. Figured I'd post up some pix.

Thanks! Insanely fun and scary. But it CAN be driven tamely. It just involves a LOT of shifting

The motor makes entirely too much power for the mini. I'd say 120hp is max for a FWD mini. I'd rethink a beetle with a bike engine. There are simply too many cheap and efficient ways to get a bug fast. 2180 with dual webbers is plenty fast I assure you. A bike engine would just be obnoxiously loud and a pain in the ass. For fuel I ran the stock SPI mini fuel tank with a bosch external pump and a return line. Fuel gauge isn't accurate but who cares...

Haven't weighed it yet but I'm going to guess around 1300lbs

rogue 09-24-2010 03:12 PM

I needed a horn, so I figured why not put a truck horn in

I think I might put another one in the other wheel well. Overall great horns though.

http://www.stebel-usa.com/product/32...ct_Truck_Horn/

In other news the Motorola droid 2 carmount allows the droid 2 to take video while mounted in a car. Sadly the microphone clips like a mofo....

love that bridge

rogue 10-01-2010 06:43 PM

With the previous gearing I hit 128 on the dyno in 6th. New gearing should be faster but I've only touched 112. Too scary.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/__OT3YJ9o9Ao/TJ...2/IMG_6058.JPG

Also got a new Aluminum 2 core radiator for cooling. I'm having issues at extended RPMs above 7k or above 60mph... Thats Ralphy the mascot!

http://lh4.ggpht.com/__OT3YJ9o9Ao/TK...4/IMG_8983.JPG

I mounted up some of the rarest tires in the world. Continental Sportcontact 195/45/13s. 4 sets in the world and I tracked one down. Made the car torque steer WAY less and it actually has traction now. I love these tires....

Just playing around with some 22s. What do you guys think!?:smoke:

I would say that we all here drive or have every intent to drive our cars once finished.....but stories/pics like this and Matt's help me understand why so many people have trailer queens! I have every intent to drive Karma on the streets....but these pics scare the hell out of me!

Glad you are ok!

rogue 10-02-2010 10:35 AM

It'll be repaired in 3 weeks. No biggie.

Once you make a car TOO nice, its no longer fun.

Hence why I've been holding off on painting both the continental and camaro.

I'll worry about them if they had 10k paint jobs.

Matt@BOS 10-02-2010 10:43 AM

That Bastard! Even if he failed to look both ways, I can't believe he didn't hear you coming from a mile away, which would have made me a little cautious. I hope insurance goes smoothly, and I'm really sorry to see this happen. After the engine swap your car quickly made its way high up my list of favorite quirky little vehicles.

Matt
