Cool build and killer wheels.

Stupid question and I am not a builder but what is the wheel barrow for? (Used for the top of the engine?)

I think its for a pocket in the firewall to move the engine farther back. I've seen some jokes about using them but for someone without a lot of metal working tools, it is already a nice shape and is usually decent gauge steel. I say, don't hate.

I'd use it if I had too....

I'm not sure if i'll use the replacement part since they are like $90 each. i will for sure repair them in some way or another.

the wheel barrow is what home depot calls it. i like to call it a prefab fire wall

Ron Fox 07-29-2010 10:17 AM

Cool prefab fire wall.

If you have time is it possible to post more pics of the installment of the wheel barrow. Sounds interesting and something new to learn.

Thanks.

CamaroAJ 07-29-2010 10:54 AM

i plan on it. as far along as you see in the pictures is as far along as i am so far. tonight i plan on fully welding the wheel barrow together and grinding it smooth. then i'll trace the cut line on the factory firewall. then some cut and paste.

Some cool fab work. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

waynieZ 08-01-2010 08:44 PM

Nice progress! I've never seen that done before. sweet.

wellis77 08-01-2010 11:11 PM

Are you planning to or can you run A/C with the engine setback that much and the wheel barrow?

speedjohnston 08-01-2010 11:55 PM

I thought about using the wheelbarrow trick myself a while ago. Gale banks used it on a project a few years ago and it looked pretty good.

CamaroAJ 08-02-2010 06:02 AM

yes the car will have a/c. i tried my best to retain the stock compressor but the speedtech frame is just too narrow compaired to stock or even the DSE frame. alot of the problem was the steering gear being rear mounted so i had to move the engine to the passenger side because of the steering linkage. had i went with the DSE frame i would have been good to go.

i remember that car. 67 camaro wasn't it? did that car ever get finished?

speedjohnston 08-02-2010 08:14 AM

I'm not sure. I only remember seeing build pictures of it. It would be a shame if it never got finished, but I never heard any more about it.

CamaroAJ 08-06-2010 07:34 PM

the spindles showed up yesterday so i got those mounted and the car on the ground.

now onto the pictures, this is ride hight.

spindles use corvette hubs and brakes.

been almost 20 days since the last update. had some things to do with my dad and some other projects going on like building a shifter kart.

even though it doesn't look like much has been done to the car the small stuff takes alot of time. anyways the firewall and trans tunnel are done. the frame is out of the car and speed tech's transmission mounts are cut off. tomorrow i'll grind the welds down and reinstall the frame and stick the engine/trans back in.

Its looking good.

CamaroAJ 09-02-2010 08:38 PM

after power washing the house for the past few days i got to finish the engine/trans install.

didn't take any pictures but i cut the speedtech transmission mounts off the frame and then smoothed the old welds. then i installed the engine and trans to where i wanted it to be with the best fit for the rest of the stuff i have to do to the car. then i bolted the transmission cross member to the trans and the mounts to the member and rewelded them to the frame. about 4" back from where they were.

for the engine mounts i bent 1 3/4" .134 cage tube and built two uprights. i still need to finish welding and add two supports to make sure the engine doesn't move fore and aft just in case. i tried aftermarket mount adapters but they were not even close to fitting so i went to lowes and bought some steel plate and made my own.

I don't see a center line --- you got that bad boy squared up in there do ya??

Just checking.....

CamaroAJ 09-02-2010 09:17 PM

you mean the engine center in the frame? if thats what you mean then no. the engine sits to the pasenger side because of the steering gear. thats what roger speed tech told be that they do because of the power steering lines. it was either off set the engine of raise it really high to clear. if i remember i'll try and get a picture of that tomorrow.

CamaroAJ 11-04-2010 08:46 PM

haven't had time to do a whole lot to the car in the past few weeks but here is what i have.
got the driver and passenger fill template done to make things look better after cutting out the package tray.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1466692_n.jpg
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._3635409_n.jpg

got to wiring the engine in. i'm about done with that and then on to the forward chassis harness and then dash harness and then rear chassis harness.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...0_703016_n.jpg

so far this is what i have removed from the stock gm engine and forward chassis harness.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5201510_n.jpg

98% done engine harness done. i still have a few things to finish up once i build the cold air intake and go to jegs to get some more wire loom.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7593430_n.jpg
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5885152_n.jpg

also have the double pass radiator. it also will be set back 7" just like the engine. i'll be working on this more later once i get the bead roller for some of the tin work.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1370048_n.jpg

also for the first time since april the car has seen sun light. still waiting on the rear suspension so its on jack stands in the rear.
when i bought it
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5813714_n.jpg

and now

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4154484_n.jpg

CamaroAJ 11-14-2010 07:47 PM

not much of an update since its hard to take pictures of wiring.

got the fuse blocks mounted
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6323814_n.jpg

the lamp harness and some of the ECM wires.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._3793391_n.jpg

the main harness to the firewall is done and most of the wires are to the location they need to be and just need tied up.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...5_900236_n.jpg

got the EBCM mounted and the harness lengthened
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._3612804_n.jpg

so at work on friday we are throwing out all of the GM parts from when we were a Chevy dealer and i found this. its a rear HVAC module from an '03-'06 envoy extended.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7105194_n.jpg

because of the '01 dash conversion i did and the fire wall mods for the engine set back i had a TON of room. after some mock up and then putting the dash back in it fit!

black2002ls 11-14-2010 09:49 PM

Awesome dedication on this thing! Seems like a project I would try and tackle if I had the funds. One question, on the engine mount in this picture:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._8031464_n.jpg

This could be me over engineering, but I feel like there is a need to triangulate that mount.

Tiger 11-15-2010 03:27 AM

I would triangulate that mount, maybe its as you say over engineering but better safe than sorry.

CamaroAJ 11-15-2010 09:03 AM

the engine mounts are not done yet, good eyes guys and i was thinking the same thing. i was waiting on getting my steering column mounted so i knew what kind of clearance i have just in case.

i plan on running i brace from the top of the mount forward to the frame on each side. i was concerned about the engine moving forward and back under hard braking and accell.

black2002ls 11-15-2010 11:19 AM

If I were building those mounts. I would triangulate directly back to the frame, joining your upright with the sub frame. This will add some strength to that joint, and should keep the motor mount from moving. Or, if you are worried about movement front to back, bring the mount front and back, essentially creating a pyramid.

waynieZ 11-15-2010 11:38 AM

It looks good. Thats a lot of wire!

CamaroAJ 11-29-2010 06:47 PM

i decided to make my own LED tail lamps because i don't care for any of the aftermarket ones that are out. its also cheeper that the awesome billet one. its not done because i ran out of LED's but two thirds of its done. then i get to start on the passenger side and even more LED's. at least i'll be seen when i stop.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2144512_n.jpg
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7252797_n.jpg

doesn't look pretty but its a pain to wire that many LED's and not short them together.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1638116_n.jpg

i seem to have a problem getting a picture of LED's turned on. this is 2 of the 3 park lamps on. it is the perimeter of each lens for park lamps and the center of the outside lenses are brake lamps.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5893840_n.jpg

i took an angled shot to get a picture. when i take a straight on shot its too bright and blurry. brake light on.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4214535_n.jpg

i also have back up lamps
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...9_781877_n.jpg

CamaroAJ 01-04-2011 09:23 PM

got most of my LD 3 link. have to wait till the rest of it shows up to make sure everything fits before i can go any farther.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4834753_n.jpg

got the forward mount in
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7141875_n.jpg

and mocked up

http://l10.sphotos.l3.fbcdn.net/hpho..._4236938_n.jpg

alot of wiring so nothing really to take pictures of. only have a few things left to wire but i can't do it until i'm farther along with my build. got the pass through connector done for the fuel tank and wheel speed sensors.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1019226_n.jpg
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4058721_n.jpg

also got all the welds cleaned up and holes filled while i wait on the rest of the parts for the rear suspension to get here to finish up.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2468634_n.jpg

got the forward chassis harness pass through connector mounted and cleaned up.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...3_998035_n.jpg
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7463197_n.jpg

also have the cruse control module mounted (and wired, not pictured)
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1270183_n.jpg

finished the brackets for the HVAC module and remounted the PCM and rewired to fit.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...9_525310_n.jpg

CamaroAJ 01-20-2011 08:40 PM

just a small update. mainly welding seams, grinding and some metal finish work so no real pictures of that right now.

started working on converting the electronic HVAC door actuators over to cables. machined two aluminum bushings to attach to the plastic gear on the HVAC module. the mode door is a simple throw arm like the 60's controls were. the temperature door is not so simple because of the amount of room i have to work in. so i made it a push/pull cable. this is as far as i got for now because i have to machine a new more parts for the control head side of things and get a few motorcycle throttle cables ordered so i can adjust the cables.

Watts link set up looks good.

64pontiac 01-23-2011 08:58 PM

Wheel speed sensors..... so your doing ABS???? Interesting!

I want to see some more dash mockup!!! Get to work. J/k looking good.

SickSpeedMonte 01-24-2011 11:10 AM

^ I was wondering the same thing, or maybe traction control.

Nice work! I love seeing guys build stuff in their own garage without all the fancy machinery. It really gets me excited to work on mine once I get some money together.

CamaroAJ 01-24-2011 11:28 PM

yes, it has ABS and traction control. for now i am using the 4th gen camaro EBCM/BPMV, if it doesn't work out i will graft the C5 system into it.

I'm a master certified gm tech so i know these systems pretty well. it makes working on these systems hassle free for the most part.

kttrucks 01-25-2011 06:35 AM

This looks like a great build... even though it isnt a Mustang...:D Just curious, how are you going to match the profile of the dash to the windshield base? I'm using an 04 Cobra dash in my '66 Coupe, and although it's trimmed to fit, I still have to use some kind of filler to finish it out and was wondering if you're going to use 'glass or some kind of epoxy. I think I can get away with glass but Im looking at options. nice work on the metal replacement.

thanks!

CamaroAJ 01-25-2011 07:08 AM

i'm going to glass the 1st gen a pillers to the 4th gen a pillers.
