Digging it Dave!

SS1156 08-11-2010 05:18 AM

I am especially enjoying this thread. My first car was an all original 69 442 that I bought off the 2nd owner for $1000. Man I wish I still had that car, it even had the original Goodyear Polyglass F70/14 spare in the trunk that had never been on the ground. I remember that copper color, my 400 was the same color. Good luck with the build. Congrats on the upcoming wedding.

You gotta put this build up on the home built thread. This is gonna be good.

BanditDave 09-02-2010 05:58 PM

Got a few updates!

Just about got the front end buttoned up. Sway bar installed last week. Still need to install the steering box and steering linkage but that is only minor. Also built the rear with the CPP rear big brake kit. Everything looks great! Pics to come tomorrow.

Also picked up some engine goodies. I sold the original 74mm turbo I had because I believe I need to walk before I run. I picked up another turbo and wastegate combo...67mm turbo which should max out at around 700 hp without IAT issues with a decent intercooler. I am looking for a VERY drivable 600 flywheel horse. Got this baby today:

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...ntakeSetup.jpg

GMPP intake, Wilson Manifolds fuel rails, Edelbrock 90-deg elbow, injectors, and gaskets for a smokin' deal.

I will eventually upgrade the injectors but for now they will be good to start with.

More to come in the next few days!

Thanks,
Dave

I went with a bit smaller turbo from what I originally showed in the thread. The main reason being is that I am still learning the whole FI process and knowing that my short block is only good for so much I wanted to make sure any turbo set-up I have maxes out before I grenade the engine. In this case the 67mm I replaced the 74mm with maxes out at about 650 to 700 hp before the IAT get out of control and a need a ridiculous intercooler. Right now I am shooting for 600 engine HP. I believe I will get there fairly easily and this thing will be like insta-spool!

I mapped it for massive torque without crazy Rs and am hoping my combo pays off. Since it is still a T4 flange I can always go back to the biggun...but right now I'd rather be safe than sorry. I have also heard really good things about the LS9 cam in milder builds which I believe mine still falls under. I am not too worried right now on the transmission. The gentleman who built it races them exclusively and gave me the list of parts that was put in this thing and how it was prepped. He also backed it up with any and all support necessary should I have any problems. With dedication like that, how can I complain?!!

Currently I am limited by my injectors anyway, I just want to get started so mathematically I am just going test out 6lbs of boost...then go from there.

We'll see though. I can't wait till the day she fires up again on her own.

mustangmanic67 09-14-2010 10:40 AM

little advice on turbo ls.

since you are going the turbo route, I would advise a evac catch can system on your motor. If you don't do it this way, when you are in boost you will be compressing the crankcase and forcing oil out wherever and you will pop the dipstick tube out. also, make sure your turbo return line doesn't leak. :D

Dave,
Quick question, Am re-doing a 1967 cultass small block and am stuck on options on aftermarkert pulleys and brackets. Again, I dont see any other aftermarket brands except mondello performance that sells these olds stuff. What brackets are you using? orig? are there any other brands that sell what am looking for?
sorry to hi-jack this thread.

Again nice ride!

I believe Dick Miller Racing has a serpentine belt set-up but I think it is based off stock brackets. There is really nothing out there for SBOs but you can update with something like the G-body pulleys that look a little nicer than the older stuff. You could also use '77-'79 403 Olds Trans Am brackets and pulleys.

March only makes the BBOs set-up and I am not sure it could be adapted, but there is always a possibility.

BanditDave 10-03-2010 07:47 PM

Got an update for today...will have to snap some better pics real soon.

LS9 cam is installed as well as he heads and timing chain (with LS2 cam gear). Waiting on a couple things before I install the valley cover, PRs and rockers. Unfortunately I need to get the front accessory drive (with the balancer) before I can tighten down the timing cover and oil pan.

Waiting on a #10-AN bulkhead fitting for the Oil Pan. This will be my Turbo's return port. Want to get the accessory drive somewhat mocked up before I commit to where I am placing this thing. Want to make sure that there is sufficient clearance and as straight a shot for the drain back off the turbo.

Also received the Hotchkis tie rods and centerlink and am still waiting on my damn GM600 box from an Ebay vendor...when will I ever learn!?! :faint:

Ground down the rear UCA from BMR to work on the 12 Bolt...pretty typical so I wasn't surprised. Trying to get the rear installed by next weekend because I have a feeling I will be a little tied up...

Anything special on installing that LS9 cam?

I'm going with a something similar - Edelbrock tvs2300, CNC ported L92/LS3 heads.... was wondering if that's a cheap viable cam option.

BanditDave 10-05-2010 08:03 AM

Nope, I may need slightly different length pushrods but it is a 3 bolt cam so I got the LS2 cam gear and front cover. Everything else is a very nice drop in. I'll grab some pics for you tonight!

Anyways, today is I painted the short block I scored right near my house. LY6 with fly cuts already done. I am throwing stock L92s on her (assuming USPS ever delivers them!!!   ) but nevertheless, she is looking nice!

Sorry about that...didn't know there was a reply here. That is my '84 Cutlass Supreme...my race car. Originally had a 403 Olds that ran 11.50s consistantly...someone bought that. Now, it is going to get a frame notch, pro-touring suspension and a Twin Turboed LS when the '69 442 is done. For now she sleeps and waits.

As for the '69, I will have a few updates in the next couple of days. Got a lot of stuff accomplished, I usually shutdown the car stuff over the winter and focus on my model railroading (I know...dork) but I am getting the bug again so I have a few presents on the way as well as the completed long block.

Stay tuned...

Here's a little taste:

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...31/3253019.jpg

Just a little something for mock-up to shove under her. 325 30-19s for $20...not bad.

Because I opted for the large by huge wheel/tire combo, I will need to tweak the wheelwells a bit. Since I am going to be jacking with that anyway, I have a set of '04 - '06 GTO seats (front and back) that will be recovered to more appropriately display its new mark. I can play with the positioning of the rear seat a bit and modify as necessary. I am changing it to a Lokar floor shifter to more closely mimic a 4-speed stick car with no console. I want a clean look for the floor...just rug and shift boot. I may move on to an upgraded door panels but for now, cleaned up stockers are just fine.

My goal for this whole build is that I want subtle changes that may even go unnoticed. I am even considering running adapters on the L92 heads so I can run SBC valve covers and make them look like Olds valve covers.

More to come! Thanks for the compliments!

Dave

BanditDave 02-28-2011 10:23 AM

Made some very nice progress ovr the last few weeks. I will post a lot of pics tonight.

Rear is in as of last night. Underside detailing is complete. I had been at a crossroads for a while with regards to fuel cell vs. Ricks vs. sumped stocker and I am now pretty locked on the fuel cell for a number of reasons. The main reason is that while I give up trunk space, I gain a ton of room underneith to mount the fuel pumps as well as additional mufflers/resonators for the exhaust system. I am making some custom touches on the bumper and I want to make sure that there is plenty of room for the tails/mufflers. I want this thing as quiet as possible. Also, this thing will be going turbo eventually - onec I work out the bugs in my '84 race car. Putting the cell in the trunk just offers up so much more room as LS1NOVA proved in his build.

Also, long block is done and am waiting on Pace Performance's accessory drive so I can install the balancer, etc...and final torque the pan.

Picked up coils and brackets, HOWEVER, got screwed on an EBAY buy and now need L92/LS3 valve covers....AGAIN. If anyone has a pair for a reasonable price, let me know. I need the ones with clearance for offset rockers.

EZ EFI is on the way! Thanks Jake from JRS!

Pics to come! I shoudl have this thing on the road by summer...it won't be pretty but I don't care.

Goal for this iteration will be 11s first time down the track. Very doable in my opinion.

Thanks :lateral:
Dave

BanditDave 02-28-2011 08:23 PM

Here's some photos of the progress. Again...sorry for the mess. Trying to slowly throw things away i don't need...but I generally hold on to the until the last possible minute just in case I need it.

Anyway, on to the pics!

Here's another shot of the front suspension with complete steering...only thing left is to install the shocks

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_8845.jpg

Complete Long block sans valve covers...kinda had an issue with the ones I got...they were misrepresented and I did not get better pics...oh well.

Without valve covers:

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_8848.jpg

With Driver's cover...passenger doesn't fit:

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_8863.jpg

Edelbrock adapters with PST mounts:

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_8851.jpg

Rear suspension installed minus sway bar - 12" rear brakes:

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_8852.jpg

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_8854.jpg

Underside of trunk pan...going with trunk mounted fuel cell. I figure I will be eventually upping the power and needing a roll bar...plus it leaves me room for an additional set of muffs and easy fuel pump routing underneath - especially if I go E85 I can fit dual pumps with no issue. I also have room for the trans cooler back there.

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_8855.jpg

Another front shot:

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_8860.jpg

And Bilstein shocks:

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_8861.jpg

Definitely a lot more to come this week. I should be getting my GMPP front accessory drive from Pace, as well as my EX EFI from Jake (JRS) and my Stainless Valve Covers which I purchased tonight. Also not pictured is my MSD 6012 box and harness.

This is what I am going for under the hood...just a lot less cluttered:

http://www.sportscargallery.com/imag...g4spd_eng1.jpg

I'm still all screwed up on wheel sizes at the moment as well as color. I am torn between Victory Red...(red rocket...duh) or BMW Sparkling Graphite Metallic with semi-gloss bumpers, trim, etc... I really think that will look sinister.

MORE TO COME!!!

And for today's updates...

Finished buttoning up the bottom end and front cover...still waiting on my accessory drive from Pace Performance...its a very popular item so they are a little backordered.

Installed the new valve covers and coils as well as the Pacesetter Headers that I will be modding slightly for my build. Should work nicely.

Also made a sweet purchase from Luke Mau of L&H Kustoms - a complete Vaporworx tank pump and regulator set-up!!! I am VERY STOKED about this one as I plan of upping the power in the near future and won't have to do a darn thing to the fuel system.

On to the pics!

Few updates for today. Got the EZ EFI on Thursday...very excited!!!! Also got the engine and trans stabbed in for the first of many times this weekend. The PST urethane mounts are a real PITA to work with not to mention I have to trim some metal off the top of the 4L60e. Is there any other A-body guys out there that had that issue as well? I will take some pics of had to do tomorrow after it is done. I believe they are panhard bar mounts for the 4th Gen Fbody as that is what I got it from....what a pain in the arse.

Anyway, a pleasant surprise, 4th Gen Fbody headers will work well in an A body. I will have to redirect the pipe once out of the header but no big deal.

Enjoy the pics.

Little update for ya...

Looks like I goofed and installed the wrong flexplate. Hey, it happens to the best of us, so the engine is back out again. Not the end of the world, just glad I noticed it before I did anything stupid...haha

And while I feel I took a small step backward, I did take two steps forward today! Decide to get a cheaper set of wheels for now because I just can see spending $3000 for a set of wheels that will enter a paint booth and I want to make sure they fit the car. I decided on the Boss 338s for now...with Rushforth Rated Xs coming in the not so distant future.

http://www.restorationperformance.co...g/boss-338.jpg

I also picked up a set of Nitto 555s to complete my rolling stock.

The FAST EZ TCU showed up yesterday as well so I am still moving in the right direction. Still a little bummed Pace hasn't delivered by accessory drive yet, but they are still making them...or so I have been told. Been close to 3 weeks since order, but what can I do...

Oh well, thanks!

Got her out of the garage for the first time in a over a year or so...definitely need to work on the camber...lol. But I am way overdue cleaning the garage. Gotta start getting some sheet metal on the front to get a feel if I need ot go lower on the front springs.

Still waiting on the tank and front accessory drive. Am going to start on wiring and body work in the next few days.
