mike

mike, sorry i meant to reference back to what you had said about just applying semi gloss clear over the current clear, however i have never done that and would not say what would happen, although it should work, the sure bet would be to apply a coat or 2 of base then semi gloss clear, then it can be buffed and the edge knocked down some.
goodluck.
more pics please jody!

Naturally I would definitely make a test panel before I messed with a perfect black finish. There is nothing more awesome than a laser straight black car to look at.

Mike

trapin 01-26-2005 12:39 PM

Jody.....speechless, I can't wait to see her finished.

Everytime I see a car on a rotisserie I get so jealous. I'd love to buy one of those things and put my car on it to do the undercarriage but I just don't think It would fit in the garage. I guess I'm just screwed. :(

Keith 01-26-2005 03:38 PM

Looks great Jody! I got bored with black as well and got alot of my front susp. powdercoated silver too. It's a nice contrast.

camcojb 01-26-2005 07:02 PM

Thanks again guys. Can't wait to get it done!

Ricochet 01-26-2005 11:24 PM

We'll, I have been sleeping for awhile & misssed this thread..

Jody..Jody..Jody...Why am I not surprised?? Looks absolutely stunning! Wouldn't expect anyhing less though from what you have done in the past. I can't wait to see it in person. I think I feel a drive coming on in your direction to see in person!!

Thanks Brent. This is no Ricochet or DoubleNickel though! I'm resisting going super fancy with the car, just want neat and clean so I can drive the wheels off of it.

Jody

Ricochet 01-27-2005 02:36 PM

I will agree that Ricochet was a little to much. That is one of the reasons I sold it. I couldn't beat the snot out of it like I wanted. Well I could but I didn't want to hurt it. As far as building another "Show car", been there - done that - won't do it again. I think alot of people will be surprised with Nickelback. It will be a completely different bird compared to Ricochet. The car will be exceptionally clean & detailed, but this car is going to 100% pure function & will get beat on a regular basis!!

camcojb 01-27-2005 03:27 PM

Very cool Brent, I like that! Then again Ricochet was breathtaking, and I liked that too!

I'm really going to feel like a tool now if I paint my a-arms silver as originally planned though. :(

Bill,

I'm sure I wasn't the first to do it and won't be the last. The black powdercoat they come with is excellent, but just didn't fit my color scheme. I say do it!

67Sally 02-02-2005 07:09 PM

Jody,

did you remove the original power coat before having the new color put on?

or

did you powder coat the new color over the old color? (can the do this??)

or

did you get them with out any color on them to start with?

William,

I didn't know they could, but they coated right over the top of it. They do it all the time for a color change where the original coating is in perfect condition. Saves a lot of time and will not come off.

I don't believe there's an option with DSE but you'd have to call them.

Jody

zbugger 02-02-2005 10:12 PM

As far as I know, it is optional, but by request. I think you have to be nice to them for it. Tony Huntimer got his in silver after asking for it. And yes, he had them before you Jody.

lil427z 02-06-2005 04:43 PM

Supposed to get the body back today. Called me yesterday and said it looks very good so we'll see.

I'm going to spray a test panel with the two-stage black and then a stripe of flattened clear and see how I like it. That's my first choice.

XcYZ 02-07-2005 07:35 AM

Jody, you get the award for the longest thread on Lateral-g. :D

what brand of paint are you using?? you should be very satisfied with the semi gloss clear, let us know, maybe some pics later??
jake

camcojb 02-07-2005 11:26 AM

I have Sikkens, but the car is painted in Dupont.

68protouring454 02-07-2005 12:15 PM

sikkens

great paint, another top quality european paint, makes the dupont clear feel like water compared.
is that what you have the semi goss clear in?? and also what you use on your own stuff??
dupont is ok, but its nothing compared to sikkens/standox/spies
jake
bring on some pics

camcojb 02-07-2005 12:24 PM

I have always used PPG; it's what I learned on so it's what I stick with. The closest paint supplier to me though doesn't carry it.

Whatever Dupont clear the guy is using is awesome. I actually blocked the car with 400 grit aggressively and didn't go through a single spot. He had 5 coats at that time.

68protouring454 02-07-2005 12:55 PM

clear

isn't it unreal how the clear goes on , on top of block sanded clear!!! man does it lay flat, sounds great

trapin 02-10-2005 05:11 AM

Jody....can I ask you what you coated your sub-frame in? Is it POR-15, Powdercoating, or just good old-fashinoned paint over acrylic urethane?

Thanks.

Oh....and I'm going to have to go ahead and copy you with those silver control arms. That just looks sick. Sorry. Hey, Steve Jobs of Apple said it best when he said, "good artists create....great artists steal". :D

Tony,

That's powdercoat, 80% black I believe. Kind of an eggshell black. You're more than welcome to copy the a-arms, they look very good in that color. Besides I was told that Tony Huntimer did it before me anyway, I haven't seen his though.

aren't cars fun jody, i take it you have not gotten it back yet??
jake

trapin 02-10-2005 10:19 AM

Thanks for the info Jody. I think my frame is too pitted to powdercoat. I have it coated in 2 quarts of POR-15 for trial assembly but was planning to have it media blasted for final assembly. I'll probably go traditional prime and paint so that I can sand it down smooth.

Very true. Steve, if you haven't already...you gotta check out this flick. It tells the whole story about those two. It aired on USA Network about 5 years ago. You can find it in the video stores now.

camcojb 02-26-2005 06:41 PM
