I love this build. Any updates Phil?

Roadster Shop 12-10-2011 01:01 PM

It has been a while since I posted anything on this build, but we have been back on it making some progress and thought it was time to share some updates. There are more pictures on our web site if interested.

The 430 cu/in SBC showed up from Nelson Racing Engines earlier this fall and made quite a splash in the shop. It is a pretty insane piece of machinery and should look just right under the hood of this 2nd Gen.

Wow! Very nice work on the turbo setup.

Roadster Shop 12-10-2011 01:06 PM

Once we had the motor and were able to determine where it needed to go in the chassis to have room for the turbos and everything to clear, we were able to continue on the floors, firewall, etc...

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220192.jpg

The fire wall is relatively simple in this car as we felt the motor should do most of the talking.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220345.jpg

Fabbed up a transmount with integrated exhaust ports. The plan is to run the exhaust directly under the driveshaft to minimaze the space it will take up in the car, and not have anything hanging below the car at the same time.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture219595.jpg

We made the exhaust ports split apart to eliminate an extra set of exhaust flanges and make the exhaust easier to drop out of the car if needed.

Exhaust in place

Roadster Shop 12-10-2011 01:09 PM

Then fabbed the trans tunnel and drive shaft tunnel around everything.

Completed floor and tunnel all welded up.

Inspirational. Love this build

It looks like you used a million ton press and stamped it out of one piece.
Incredible!
When I think of the little problems that perplex me on my build this makes me feel dumb as a stump :willy:

That floor is of the CHAIN! Beautiful work. :hail:

Thanks everyone! Really appreciate the great responses. We were very happy with the way the floor turned out. There is some final welding to do and it will be wrapped up and on to the next area. The roll cage was also started yesterday so I should have some additional progress pics on that later in the week.

Thanks again!

tones2SS 12-12-2011 05:41 PM

Great, great work.

onelapduster 12-16-2011 04:16 AM

I take it that the bumps where the floor and tunner meet is where the exhaust will be run?

Swain 12-16-2011 08:22 AM

I wouldn't even put carpet in their. Maybe just one seat

Work of art..

How do you cover that up? It will be a shame to cover that in dynama and carpet. Like with Jasons, just clear coat it and run a la naturaal.

Beautiful!!!!!:D

The floor is on page 27-1/2. You just have to look hard to find it!:unibrow:

Thanks. Knowing us, there will be an equal amount of time that goes into laying out the Dynamat so all labels are positioned properly and seams are all alligned! Then we can cover both with carpet! That is the great part about this site. We can showcase some of the things that generally wouldn't be seen when the car is completed.

Yes, the exhaust runs along the sides. There is a picture earlier in the thread showing the exhaust inplace before the floor was fabbed.

Here are a few progress shots on the roll cage. The goal was to keep it really tight to the body and as out of sight as possible from the outside of the car.

Great stuff guys!

70rs 12-19-2011 07:11 PM

That cage looks awesome. Nice and tight to the body.

WSSix 12-19-2011 07:26 PM

So how do you guys plan to finish the interior with the cage so close to the body? Are you going to be able to use a typical panel or come up with something else? I've always wondered how to balance having a cage out of the way but still have room to get panels and roof in place.

carlmb 12-20-2011 04:38 AM

Basically same question as above. I am in the process of installing a cage in my Mustang and was wondering how you finish (paint?) the cage when it is that tight to surrounding panels. Thanks

A cage like this will not work with any factory interior panels. On a build like this we will have the upholstery shop make all of the interior panels and fit them around the cage. It is tricky to do and not the most fun, but it makes a big difference in the final product when the cage is tucked tighter to the body and not as visible.

Again, this is difficult to do. It just takes a lot of prep time and a lot of attention to how you are spraying to make sure that everything is getting covered and there are not any dry spots.

INTMD8 12-20-2011 08:12 AM

Damn fine metal work! Thanks for the pics.

GregWeld 12-20-2011 08:15 AM

Phil -- To weld on that did you have to remove the top or open up a porthole?

Super nice work - as usual! There is nothing but the finest coming out of your shop! :hail:

Phil, why not build a cage tight up against the body and have upholstery shop make trim panels that cover the cage completely? That ways it's out of sight.

Kendall Burleson 12-20-2011 02:29 PM

The fit is killer well done Guys:bow:

Thanks Greg. No holes cut in this one, just a really good TIG welder with a ton of experience building cages

We have been planning that on another project that has been underway for some time already. It will give it more of a street car look, but still have the function of a full cage.

Thanks Phil. I'll keep my eyes out to see how you guys end up handling the interior.
