Mario said he'd buy a new Miller Dynasty 200DX for every participant that signs up for the JUNE class....

Too bad Brycen can't teach the June class -- I had planned on welding his zipper shut.

Well being that my zipper is as far up as you could reach on me, I will make sure I watch what you are trying to weld at all times!

I wasn't going to say anything until I figured out which month would work better, but now it goes with out saying. June it is!

Rodger, this is a great idea. Tig welding is something I would like to learn. I need to make sure I'm free, but as it stands now, I either date would work for me.

Tig Class

Could your class help someone who hasn't tigged before. I use a mig a lot but haven't had access to a tig to use.

OK, I will stop. But what are you doing posting. Am I going to have to run my truck into that telephone pole by your house again to knock out your internet to get some more chassis work done? You know I will do it.

Thanks Mario, My wife an all her friends just signed up and we opened the class to 36 students. You might want to pray for hail, since you own a body shop and all.

I was told that you had requested to add some more lightening holes and that we'd be practicing with the plasma cutter.

I want to go. My knowledge is very basic so everything going on will be priceless to me. I was waiting to see how fast the class filled up and who was attending. If it came down to an extra body was needed to make it happen, I was gonna try and jump in, but I dont want to waste a spot at the table for someone who is counting on this.

This is awesome, I have family in Bakersfield, so I could go "visit" them for a bit and then go tour the shop and learn some stuff.

ironworks 04-27-2011 07:31 AM

Well it looks like the June date is better, Alot of people don't care either way. So How many people will put up money for the class in June? I have 3 people confimed that have said they will be there. Greg Weld, War, and Doom. I have had a few other guys that have asked lots of questions and show some interest. Most a rookie's which is not quite what I had intended. I was trying to get guys who know atleast know how to strike an arch not have to learn how to keep you tungston out of the puddle all weekend. I would described it as a BMX course where we teach guys how to ride BMX. So You don't want to have to learn how to ride a bike for the first time on a BMX course, you just need to get some seat time on the bike before trying to learn BMX.

SO I'm not really sure. The 3 guys who I have said they will be here I think are good for the money, But I really need 12 guys to be able to give a fat stack of cash to the teachers who will be giving up their weekend.

70 chevelle 04-27-2011 12:36 PM

Whats the closest airport to you?

ironworks 04-27-2011 12:38 PM

Bakersfield. It's about a 1/4 mile away.

70 chevelle 04-27-2011 12:54 PM

Excuse my ignorance but is bakersfield a small airport ? I dont see a direct flight and Ohare usually has a direct flight to most places. Would you happen to know if your airport code is bfl?

ironworks 04-27-2011 01:11 PM

It's small. Nothing direct except Las Vegas, Denver and Phoenix. And for the oil field guys, Houston.

It's usually pretty simple. A 1 stop flight most anywhere.

BFL sounds right

Ohare to Phoenix than Bakerfield is the quickest. But you are always limited to flights out. When I visit Ironworks I fly nonstop into LA and rent a car for the drive up (gives me a chance to enjoy a little of CA.) You have way more choices flight wise direct to LA, the time to get there with car rental is the same as the layover flights and the direct flight is less expensive.

This is our first one. We have have about the response I thought we would have. I either need to raise the price for a smaller class or have less instructors per student. I have had alot more rookies sign up then expected. Which means I need more machines which means once again raise the price. I'm trying to pay these guys that instruct 2.5 times their regular wages to give up their weekends.

Plus June seems to be the much better week for students but not instructors.

Gotcha. But why not make another one in fall or winter? That way you can keep the costs down and keep same instructors per student,so everyone gets better quality education. :D I really would love to attend, but it will be impossible this time, hope you can set up another one or make it more regular.Just a thought.

GregWeld 04-30-2011 07:10 AM

We have a saying around the Seattle Yacht Club...... Do it once, it's a tradition!

ironworks 05-05-2011 06:47 AM

Update, Update, Update

Well we had a decent response on the training class. But not enough to pay the instructors the money they deserve for giving up their weekend. Plus I would have to rent some extra machines for the weekend so the rookie guys could have as much time behind the helmet as possible. I think it is just the wrong time of year, alot of graduations happen at this time and some of you guy have not seen sunshine in months.

SO, I'm thinking of trying this class after the summer. October 14-16, 2011 sounds really good for me. The following weekend is the Hot Rod reunion here in Bakersfield. And I will be back from Ft Worth, Goodguys. I'm going to work on pricing for a more beginner class. Plus having it this far out will help all you guys plan better.

Sorry I hope this does not screw anybody up.

CRCRFT78 05-05-2011 09:11 AM

What about bringing our own machine. Would that help pricing?

ironworks 05-05-2011 09:32 AM

Maybe But I have to have work benches and power sources for all the extra machines also. I was planning on more technique then a basics class. With more time to plan we will be able to put it all together

Better get Tim Bruning if you want to learn how to TIG sheet metal without warping it.... or Jason... I weld mine up - then beat it with a hammer till it gets covered with bondo. :D :woot:

GregWeld 05-06-2011 06:23 AM

TIG practice like this

Mario....

You know those body work tools called dollies.... I use one of those like it's an anvil. Beat the welded area until the metal is paper thin and stretched 'til it oil cans.... then slice the area with a cut off wheel and weld that up.... Do this numerous times per panel. The welding experience gained is well worth the replacement panel you'll need when you're done. :willy: :willy: :willy: :woot:
