waynieZ 06-29-2011 09:51 PM

Payton The car looks killer, but then again I always love your car anyway. They do some awesome fab work.

Payton King 06-30-2011 07:02 AM

Thanks for all of the kind words

I am about to go on vacation. I cannot remember if I have ever taken a full week off since I have gotten out of college and into the real world. I am going to try and get a bunch of pics posted.

Here is a lesson I have learned more than a few times over the course of owning this car for 18 years...nothing ever goes on the way it is supposed to fit. Jake's Torque Arm is designed to fit under a stock trunk pan and be a very easy and non-invasive install, one of the many reasons I went with his system. Not on my car, running a drop version of the 21st Century subfame and half height DSE bushings, my car is lower than most. When we positioned the rear end housing where it needed to be located in the car at ride height and using the ride height length of the shocks...we were in the trunk a couple of inches with the watts/shock mount. Great, break out the cutting wheel.

waynieZ 06-30-2011 08:36 AM

With that talent they will make short work out of it.

It's why they call it hot rodding.... I have to "hot rod" almost every part I ever touch. No two parts (other than OEM) seem to ever go together without a touch or two.

Car looks Great! Not sure how I missed the thread....

BTW --- we just did our 40th! Talk about time flying by... ha! You haven't even started yet. Seems to go faster and faster each year.

Vegas69 06-30-2011 09:24 AM

Sounds like you're sinking the set up pretty deep in the car. I'd look for tunnel/pinion clearance issues with your pinion angle set and at fulll bump.

And of course the cross member that comes with the kit will not work on my car, so Dan to the rescue

When

I had the leafs on before with lowering blocks, my rear axle tubes hit the rear frame rails at the same time my drive shaft hit the tunnel. My front trans angle was set at zero. We (Dan) remade my trans cross member and dropped it about an inch to give us a little more room. The suspension will bottom before the axle tubes hit the frame rails now. Should not have a problem with the drive shaft hitting the tunnel.

From the pictures it appears I am deeper into the trunk than I actually am, maybe an inch or so. At ride height we have 3 inches of compression and 2 inches of rebound...5 inch stoke shock. Axle tube is 3.5 to frame rail.

Greg, the time does fly. I look in the mirror sometimes and think, how did that happen. I always said I would never get married or have kids and now it has been 18 years and I have 2 boys 11 and 9.

Nice looking setup

What about the pinion support/adj bars. They look like they might hit the rear seat tubs if you get much lower. Mine did. I had to cut reliefs in the floor to make room... which sucked since the primary reason for getting the torque arm was to keep from having to cut into the floor. Its prob not a prob for you though seeing that it was made for a Camaro. Mine was made for a Mustang (TCI kit) and was being installed in a Maverick.

It is the angle

of the picture. It does not touch. There is a lot of stuff in a little area. Once I get to the exhaust pictures you may be able to see it a little better.

Suppose to go to paint tomorrow. Woo Hoo!

70rs 06-30-2011 01:22 PM

Congrats Payton, thats a killer upgrade and a pretty quick turn around.
Next up, full track report!

89 RS 07-02-2011 11:24 PM

Nice upgrades...and those new wheels are killer also!

66GTFB 07-03-2011 07:35 PM

Just curious, is there a reason for so much backspacing on your rear wheels? Just the look you were after? Or for caliper clearance with your floating hubs?

69x22 07-03-2011 08:54 PM

Looking good

Payton King 07-10-2011 06:52 AM

I set my car up to run

factory C6Z06 back spacing so it would be easy to order wheels or pick up a set used off of corvette forum...ie another set of track wheels

The deeper wheel also allows me room for the e-brake set up on the floater

Back from vacation. Lots of pics coming

coolwelder62 07-10-2011 02:20 PM

Payton,Car guy's use their Vacation to work on their car's. At least that is what I have told my wife. The camaro is coming along great.

Payton King 07-12-2011 07:11 AM

Seems like the only time I ever take off is to go out

of town. I need to take a few days off and get the car back together.

Time to fab up the exhaust. With the new torque arm, we had to re-make everything from the mufflers back and did some tweaking up front. As you will see from the following pics, there was no room for the tail pipes. Dan went up and over the watts and further into the trunk.

vinz68 07-12-2011 07:59 AM

Great work!!!! You gonna have it done for VIR next week??

Payton King 07-12-2011 09:29 AM

Dan is a pretty talented Dude!

He Tig's everything.

My car is not going to make VIR. Thought it would be back from paint last week, but it was not meant to be. I am driving in friday about 6:30 pm or so and staying with Ron. I am going to miss your run, but you can fill me in.

Cris@JCG 07-12-2011 11:54 AM

Really nice work their Payton!

HotRod68Camaro 07-12-2011 12:55 PM

The work on the exhaust is awesome. Makes me really want to learn how to tig.

BBC71Nova 07-12-2011 01:25 PM

Nice looking exhaust. Do you have any picture of the finished trunk? That turned out to be a lot of work but it looks awesome. Different animal now I'm sure. Like you told me I guess, "if you are gonna be a bear you might as well be a grizzly."

I missed seeing it when I was there Friday. If he keeps getting those Camaros in he's gonna have to rename the place Holohan's Pro-Touring Camaro's . The Nova's have been relegated to the annex...

cencalc6 07-12-2011 02:12 PM

Excellent work,Love the Detail Pics.......you have a Nice Build going on

How much are you raising the trunk floor?

radrambler 07-12-2011 02:52 PM

Payton King 07-13-2011 05:31 AM

Thanks again for all of the kind words

The watts only went into the trunk a couple of inches and then we had to route the exhaust through there. So, the center part is up about 2 inches and the part over the exhaust is about 6 inches.

Oh, I am a big ol' bear. Did not plan on getting this deep, but who ever does? Trunk pics will be up today.

Payton King 07-13-2011 06:10 AM

I cannot find some pictures

so I will have to explain. We cut so much out of the trunk that Dan plated the rear portion and added a few more bars to put the strength back into that area. Here is the finished product before we start on the trunk
