Thanks, the pics are awesome. When you see just the front shot of the grill on the Innovator, it kind of makes you wonder. But when you see all the pics of the interior, front and rear and the paint scheme you really see how bad ass it is. It seems the award was well deserved.

Nope it didn't make Top 5. Darn it! That's something else I usually do - take a pic of the SMOY and SROY line-ups inside the building, at the ceremony. Never crossed my mind this year?!

who the hell was in the top 5???

When you compare, detail for detail, disregarding any personal biases or subjective concerns - it was clearly the leader of the pack. My personal favorite was the Runt, but that's admittedly very subjective. I like 1st gen Novas more; now that I am "old", I like subtle cues and darker shades; etc. Take all that away and just consider the details and Innovator is undeniable. There is more there than you can take in in a few walk-arounds.

Another thing I thought about is the fact that the people at the show probably don't really have the same appreciation for what makes this car so special, because we saw all the metalworking pics. There should have been a video playing next to it showing what we saw. Then people would look at the car to see how certain areas turned out. That's what I, and probably all the Lateral-G members, did.

GoolsbyCustoms 07-09-2011 07:45 PM

Rpm nova "the Runt"
Roadster shop nova "Innovator"
Ring bros dragon
Anvil mustang
Copper mustang w/ black stripes

Innovator won SMOTY

Congrats to all the guys there it was quite possibly the stiffest competition in years

You missed my "live", in the field, coverage! :D Innovator (RS), Runt (RPM), Dragon (RB), the Anvil Stang, and the gold Stang. Do those last two cars have names?

Was hoping Pegasus was going to make the top 5! Glad to see all the mustangs!

Congrats to the guys at RS! killer job!

phillym5 07-09-2011 08:48 PM

Cool to see the Firebird there!!
Im guessing it wont get an award.. but it could possibly be the car there has been the most driven and abused in the past year. I got to keep that car at my house for 2 months here in Socal... put all the break in miles on it... had that junk going 160+ while racing my Camaro.... lol.

Love that car!!!!!!! :captain:

G-Body 07-09-2011 09:06 PM

Heres some random shots of the top five cars!
From what im hearing this radical Road Runner was puking and sputtering and he didnt even bother bringing the car out on sat.
Amazing show this inNOVAtor! nova was off the chains with the incredible amount of fabrication and details sick sick ride!
Congrats!

I concur, but I don't think we have the same opinion of what ridiculous is.:goofy:

Congratulations and thanks to the owners and builders for providing us an example of what can be done with an unlimited budget. Hopefully some of the nicer pieces and bits will trickle down to be used on some of our "Joe Touring" cars and trucks.

tooblue 07-10-2011 08:00 AM

Really nice cars ,, All of them in once place to see and take pics:thumbsup: I will have to attend one of these events where SMOTY is taking place.. Congrats to all of the winners !!

I didn't really like that Camaro, it has great quality building, that's for sure, but I don't really like it, anyway, congratulations on the build.

hifi875 07-10-2011 02:49 PM

What ever came of it. Never saw it at smoy parking or Friday autocross. Or Saturday

toddshotrods 07-10-2011 03:01 PM

Idk, I saw it roaming around a couple times, then don't remember seeing it anymore. I thought it was a Mopar when I saw it coming at me, then realized it was a Camaro when I could see the sides and back.

I agree, the front does look Mopar'ish.

G-Body 07-10-2011 04:01 PM

Anyone get some good photos of the 69 road runner? it was a no show sat.

Musclerodz 07-10-2011 06:02 PM

Greening Camaro never made it into the SMOY corral. Plagued with motor issues. That kept it from competing. The Roadrunner was there Saturday and it spilled it guts as it was parking at the autocross, so it never run, and not eligible.

This was the toughest group I have seen in years. Congrats to all

RPM HOTRODS 07-10-2011 07:29 PM

Jesse didn't build that car. I know it was at his shop and he did a ton of work on it, but it was built by Joe Stuben and his son Dale, I believe. The car is a Downs glass body unless I heard wrong.

That is what the Greening guys told me, it was a Downs body.

Some killer cars.
I like the Ring Bros Mustang, Innovator and that black T/A, which I believe was done by ASP. Those would be my 3 choices.

It looked to me like the brakes were locked up on the roadrunner, And that in turn fried the trans fluid in the Brunno convertor on the front of the Lenco trans. Amazing what a backwards check valve might do to your day at the show. There were quite a few cars that did not survive the cruise to the autocross let alone the first lap in the autocross.

I think the autocross is good test but I think those cars should be driven somewhere Friday night for the show. And then like the Hot Rod of the year award maybe run down the drag strip. Shoot even up the freeway Friday night to the host Hotel. I took my Camaro up there Friday night and Me ( The Driver) almost did not last. It was HOTT. The award is called Street Machine right?

In the True Street drag races they make all the cars go on a 30-mile drive and when staging for the cruise they have to idle for 10 minutes or so.. that tends to weed out the "race cars" and I'm sure it would eliminate the show cars as well.

Well that used to do this. I raced Pacific Street Car Association for a few years with Roger Holder in the true ten five class. And I can tell you they don't do that anymore in the PSCA or West Coast Hot Rod. We ran a 3 gallon gas tank under the hood and had the smallest radiator we could possibly run. There is no way any of those top categories could cruise 30 miles without being towed. Heck alot of the turbo guys went to aluminum exhaust off the turbos.

nvr2fst 07-12-2011 05:31 PM

Great time as usual, the picks choosen were fantastic cars and fabrication.
But I spent most of the time viewing the rods this year with my son for the short time we were down there. The humidity was pathetic and was my main reason for cutting the trip short.

I can vouch for this statement. Even with the Dynamat that floor got HOT!! I know this because the little hair that I have on my calves got singed off on the ride over!!

Your right we built the black firebird, and I appreciate the compliment! We had a blast with the car in the autocross, but I agree Dragon, Innovator, and the Runt were all VERY awesome cars all properly prepared for the show. The bird was loaded with dead bugs and road rash, the owner and I can't resist driving her all over so its hard to compete in shows...she's just meant to haul a**!!

Roger like Steve said, this is exactly what they due in NMCA true street.

Roadster Shop 07-13-2011 12:52 PM

I wanted to say thank you on behalf of the Roadster Shop for all of the great support we have received from the Lateral-G community. There was some extremely stiff competition this year and we were greatly honored to to be selected as the 2011 Street Machine of the Year among such incredible cars. I honestly feel that this was the strongest field of pro-touring styled cars that has come together for a single event. There were probably 10 cars that should have been in the Top 5. it was great meeting new people and catching up with those that we only get to see a few times a year at events like this.

We are in the process of updating our website and will have the entire build book online for everyone to look through along with in process and completed pictures.

Thanks again for all of the support and compliments on the build. It definitely keeps us motivated to raise the bar and build the next one better!

-Phil

Bigtime congrats Phil to the whole RS crew. Great work. And all the cars were simply amazing. Man, to see how far this "hobby" has come blows me away sometimes!

Beers for all!
