I would think building a PT car with good road manners would be much easier than building a Bronco like that for a DD. Very cool.

Hey look ...some updates. Had some time to get a few things done on the car. Got to work on the seat and rad mounts. Designed and built the hood hinges and started the fender mounts. Did a little more work on the pedal arrangment. Shortened the front fenders 2" over the tire which will translate to less front overhang. Also took another inch out of the front corner of the fender and got the engine bay vents sculpted and fabbed in. Still need to fab the wheel opening lip for all four corners, plus a million other things.
I think the next thing will be constructing the hood out of fiberglass. I could buy one but none of the ones available suit the plan, so I will have to make it. The rear quarter extensions will also need to have a mold pulled off them to turn them into fiberglass. Check out the pics. |
Gary
Glad to see you back at the car. How's the progress on those headers? What's the plan for the grille and bumper up front? Talladega style? |
Your progress looks good. Nice work!
|
Looking good. Glad to see you making progress. Will you put a grill on the back side of the vents like Trans Ams have or is the plan to leave it open?
|
Thanks for the compliments. Seeing everyone elses progress is a big motivation.
It sucks not having time to work on it and with so many other things changing for me I 'm not sure how much I will be able to work on it. Just have to do what I can. I have not started the headers yet, I still have to order the materials. The grille will be stock ,but instead of flush mount like a talledega, I will set it back a couple of inches. I think I will trim the bumpers down and make them thinner so I can use a valance panel which will be a splitter as well. The side vents and air intake scoops will have a screen in the openings. |
Nice to see you at it Gary. Get that Honeydew list cleaned up and you will be on your way! :unibrow:

I didn't think being out of work would be so time consuming. I have been helping build a car for the Detroit Autorama Ridler Award. Between doing that project and taking care of other things my Torino project has been shoved into my spare garage. I do work on it but I can only get in small amounts of time to play. On one of my U.S. roadtrips recently I stopped by Summit in Reno and picked up a Vintage air system. I want this car to be comfortable on long roadtrips south in the heat of summer. I began the dash fabrication with the panel vent pods. The vents are from a Ford Flex, I think. I made the pods from fiberglass. The stock dash in a Torino doesn't appeal to me so that will be custom fabbed , also from fiberglass. I have one header completed and the other is about 1/3 done. I also got started on the custom hood. Took a blank off the stock hood inner and outer and will use the cowl hood section that I cut off a mustang hood. The back of the cowl will be closed and the air intake will be on the front edge. I made the wooden buck in which I can hammer form the four fender lips in. I just picked up a shrinker/stretcher and once its mounted I can make the fender lips.
Now, after typing this out with my hi tech two finger style, it does look like have done something on the car. (the pic of the header won't upload, I will take some new ones and upload later) |
This is a pretty cool project! I always wanted to do one of these Torinos. Like the ideas man! And a fellow Canuk to boot?
|
Hey by any chance is this Gary formerly of Speedtech? Just noticed the bronco and thought maybe I could put two and two together. sorry if I am wrong!
|
Yes Tyler...its me, how are you doing? how's the big new shop?
|
Its super busy here, mostly cause I don't have enough hands on deck in the shop. I would hire you in a heartbeat if you were closer! And I wouldnt call it "big", just comfortable. They are never big enough right? We don't have a ton of space, but we make do.
Got a super cool V10 powered car going to SEMa in a few weeks. Thats been the story of my life for the last 6 months. SEMA = Living under a rock You think you could put any more tire up front on the Torino?? |
I will be at sema this year, your car will be where? Just like doing a car for the Ridler.....its a life choice.
Weather is to poopy out there, -20c is not my thing. How about you come out here!!! No matter what the shop size , its to small , that's for sure!!! The Torino will EASILY fit 19x12 with a 345 on all four corners. I will run the 325s I have for now. |
We are in the Paxton/vortech booth. I will shoot you my number we can meet up.
Are you modifying the v10, forced induction, or anything of the sort? |
Just a custom intake and the headers....stock insides...it may get some cams or a small shot of NOS if it needs a little more. It might see a track day or two, but only for some fun. I don't know what its like where you are, but here, if your 40 kmh (24 mph) over the speed limit they can take your car.

Gary
I'm glad to see you back and making some progress on this car. Just when I think I'm going over the top on my Torino I look at yours and say I'm taking the easy way out.:faint: This is definitely going to be the GT version. |
Rob...your engine by itself puts yours over the top, let alone the chassis.
Once both headers are done and the AC is laid out, I will pull the motor and begin the sheetmetal work for the eng. comp. and grille area. My work garage is in my backyard and the car is stored in the garage in the front yard. Makes for a lot of walking to get anything done. Taking the short cut through the house is going to wear out the carpet. |

Sadly jarhead....Nothing done on the Torino. Other interests have taken all my time lately. Restore a 77 Bronco for my wife , rebuild and update my 71 Bronco to have it ready for a road trip to AZ last march. Sell my house , finish all the projects at work and close my shop. Right now, I'm packing for long distance move. Packing a house up that I lived in for 26 years is a lot of work.
I know , I know.....a whole lot of excuses why the Torino isn't done.....sorry How about couple pics of my Broncos..... |
Gary I'm just down the road in Pitt Meadows, great work on the Torino! Packing up after 26 years is a bitch I know.Would have liked to have seen the Torino driving around town.Good luck on the move...

Thanks Dave, You will eventually see the car here in the lower mainland. Just a little behind schedule....meaning... way over due.
|
Nice Bronco's Gary, I've had a few myself

Hi all. Its been a very busy few years. Finish a long distance move, renos on house, build a garage, build a pool and do all the labour trade work with friends.
I have had the Torino sitting on the build cart tempting me to work on it. I finally cleared the garage to put in a few months on it and make some real headway. Time for some ME time. I will update this over the next little bit to get the build progress up to date. Here is a teaser pic.... |
Looks good Gary!
|
Thanks Joe. I've been checking out your progress, your really getting into it. Nice work.
|
Gary that looks killer so far! Hopefully you'll get some more time to work on it...what color are you going with
|
YES! Really glad to see this coming back as I loved what you were doing with the car. Keep us updated, please!

Thanks guys. Its a great feeling to be back at it and not just dreaming about it. Even had doubts about actually ever finishing it. lol.
So the first step was to re envision the plan. I decided to put the suspension on it and take it off the chassis cart. Get it on the floor at ride height to have a look where it is and get back into the project. First thing was a revamp of the rear suspension. I changed it up to a 3 link with a panhard. ( I cant find my pics of that just yet) next was to begin the building of the floors. The first sections done were the area above the diff and the trans tunnel. I did get most of the actual floor pans built but haven't installed them yet. Then I got to work on the rear spoiler. In the original plan I was going to make a fiberglass trunk lid and spoiler. I decided to make it out of steel and use the stock lid since its in great shape. The top edge of the spoiler will have a Gurney flap. |

I built the hammer form to fab the fender lips just before I mothballed the project. I got to work on the fender lips. The rears would also need the inner tubs tied into the wheel opening …. so needless to say it took a while.
