Man this 62 is going to be a ton of fun to watch being built!! You guys are incredible! The older I get the better these cars look. Had one when I was 16 and sold it after driving it 5 miles. Thought it was a boat! Guess we are entitled to make one mistake in life.:D

Love what you and Rodger are doing with this car.. Im sure it will be awesome.

Tom
ps thanks for explaining the investment stuff. wish they made everyone of us learn that before we set off into the world to WORK for money.
Im 40.. damn it, you make so much sense. I feel way behind..

Tom --

I do some whacky stuff --- even gets me to chuckling about it sometimes... this was one of the good ones. Truthfully - I was scared to death she was going to kick my azz... she LOVED her BMW... and I'd already traded it off! Without asking! That usually doesn't work out real well!:unibrow:

++++++++++++++++++++

The problem with money management - it seems to be a taboo discussion even amongst friends! WTF is wrong with us - we need guidance and help on everything else in our lives and this is one of the most important. So it's okay to discuss sex? But not how to set ourselves up for retirement? No wonder the country is broke! :wow: :wow:

Greg/Rodger- This will be an incredible build to watch & come together for 2012!

EXACTLY.... you said it.. WTF IS RIGHT. You speak from experience. OBVIOUSLY You did it and it worked. If i a clue about how important money working for me was early in life, id be enjoying life right now ..instead of starting from scratch @ 40 THATS WHY I LOVE THIS HOBBY ..GOOD PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF.. Funny, SMART, loves cool cars and willing to share knowledge with the rest of us. Appreciate what you have shared.

that's going to be a great car Greg. You're a very lucky guy.

Man, it's tough to pull off a build that is "badass", yet still has a classic, timeless look. This seems like it will shape up to be a perfect marriage of the two. Fantastic concept. Exceptional workmanship. Great job

Vegas69 12-16-2011 10:51 PM

This is going to be one bitchin car. Greg, I like your color choice.

That's going to be one awesome build guys. Love the concept, dig the drive line, and really like the wheels you've picked.

Greg,

The R8 story was a good one and had me chuckling here. First time I saw one of those was a few years ago when Calgary was the kick off city for the infamous Bull Run. Four of us were headed to Montana on our Harley's for a day ride when an hour south of town we were blitzed by an R8 that went by us at warp 5. About 3 miles later he was stopped on the roadside with a Sheriff parked behind him. We laughed and rolled on as the cops were waiting for all these guys headed stateside out of Canada. About 5 minutes north of the border we were doing 80-90 and rolling in the hills when that same Audi passed us again.

This time he was at warp 7 and must of past us doing at least a buck eighty or more because we watched him disappear down the valley and over another rolling hill in a matter of seconds and that was a long ways from us. It sounded wicked when he blasted by us the second time and it was obviously WOT. Nice car for sure and I'm thinking your wife agreed. I'll bet your stock moved up on that move. I know my wife would be tickled if I bought her an R8. Gotta wait until she's done hauling the kids around before that happens though.

I wanted to put that on her car -- she didn't want it - but I thought it would be perfect.

Funny how many people see the car and ask that EXACT question!

We just chuckle to ourselves later.

GregWeld 12-17-2011 10:46 AM

That is a color called TEAK BROWN -- Drove over to Audi to see it.... it looks great in this rendering - but is totally boring brown in "the flesh". BUT -- I found another color called DAKOTA GREY that is a grey brown that I sent to Rodger yesterday that is pretty close to the rendering that Sean drew up.

Same color -- different light!

A color of upholstery they had -- so just put the two together for some "thoughts".

Color looks really nice Greg! there appears to be a ton of flop to it from the pictures. How does it look outside?

Yeah -- we've flip flopped a lot! Oh wait.... you're talking about the colors! Yeah -- it was amazing to see it go from brown gold to grey brown... which is what I kinda liked about it. The other color - Lava Grey - goes from medium grey to dark grey... with a larger metallic flake. I really like both of them.

Might have to have a couple panels sprayed out and live with 'em awhile....

I've always loved the Impala and or the drop top version and was really not a fan of the bubbler... but with Sean Smiths renderings - I'm digging it now!

I've always like the bubble tops. There aren't too many around the Lat-g parts. Keep the pics coming Grego!! I think the consensus is the brown.

They just look soooo....spaceship-like.

Ketzer 12-17-2011 04:39 PM

Another huge fan of the Bubbletops!

I'm doing brown on my project and really liking the one used on those new Fiat 500 golf carts. It's very dark brown, less of the greyish you seem to favor.

Sweet looking project Greg. I love the power choice with that and the frame its going to be a ball to drive. I'm going to have to save up for a trip to see your cars in person, sort of like the Peterson museum, accept you drive yours. lol

Nah -- just show up at Columbus GG Show -- Rodger will have it there.... That's if Kenny doesn't wreck it... and Tracy can get the upholstery done. :willy: :unibrow:

Just to be clear Columbus 2013, not 2012. We can take the 32 this year.

That's a good start. The right side of the country needs to catch up on "The Weld Collection" anyway.

Fluid Power 12-18-2011 05:53 AM

Anyway -- back to the thread -- RODGER is right on about the intent of the build -- a '62 Bubble Top S63 AMG. It doesn't need a 572 twin turbo rat-a-tat-tat motor it just needs massive torque... paddle shifted 4L80E... kinda fat tires - great interior - a color combo that says inviting, classy, & badass like a high end call girl... and just enough rumble to get noticed. The doors have to shut like my S63... and it has to have a compliant but capable ride (Ironworks new chassis!). Don't look for it on the autocross... look for it on the highway and on Power Tour. :woot:[/QUOTE]

Greg, I think you are spot on. I am so looking forward to this car. The details are perfect and I love the fact that the exhaust note will be subtle. I think a lot of guys that build cars similar to this ruin them by putting the big rumpty rump exhaust on them when understated power suits the build style so much better. The AMG or M5/M6 exhaust note is spot on!

I think I came a little when I saw Roger started a build thread on this!

Excellent choice of car.....I've always wanted a 62 Bel-Air....By the looks of it on that rendering, is going to be a Very Sweet looking Ride

Yeah -- At one point I called "The Rajah" (as Skip calls him  ) and said - lets put a NRE TT 572 in it... it's a big car with a huge engine compartment! But then he talked me off the ledge and we re-hashed the "intent".... And the intent is to put a bunch of miles on it - have it at all the major shows and prove the chassis... Plus get enough "attention" that people will want to see what Ironworks builds....

" Raja (also spelled rajah, from Sanskrit राज rāja- and Urdu: ... is an Indian term for a monarch, or princely ruler of the Kshatriya varna."

Good to see Wikipedia has high (or tall? ;) ) regard for the 'The Rajah'. :D

Greg, regarding the exhaust note ...I know you want to keep it low key. I like the deep, throaty sound many of the stock GM LS exhaust systems have.

A number of aftermarket systems I've heard seem to have lost that.

If it ended up sounding just like my S63 - I'd be thrilled! It "rumbles" but never intrudes into the cabin - but jump on it - it gets loud but very deep throated.

Some of these exhausts sound like meat grinders on steroids.

GregWeld 12-19-2011 01:11 PM

I forgot to add --- the exhaust (stock) on my M5 (10 cylinder) was THE WORST exhaust sound in the history of the universe. That was just ONE of the many reasons I sold it 6 months after I bought it. What a nasty sounding little motor! Total Ricer.

AMG's have great sounding exhausts for stockers.

Heard 'em...they were bad.

Gratuitous Chicayne pic...since this is a '62 build thread after all. ;)

Can't tell from here for sure, but it looks like the upper body color may be gray.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...26c16351_b.jpg

BTW- are you guys planning to whack the roof a little?

GregWeld 12-19-2011 01:50 PM

Still can't figure out why they used the ugly body (a post) for that build...

Rajah will have to answer the roof whacking question... we've talked about it - but I'm really trying to stay away from a bunch of useless money wasting body mods... I just don't think the car needs much. "Much" being the operative word.
