My sincere thanks to all of you. I am home tonight now with the kids. A quick update, we thought she had stomach flu which lasted a week with no improvement and we were sent to ER on Friday. They were backlogged and it took about 5 hours to finally get her into X-Rays. They found that her lower intestines were twisted badly and causing an obstruction. Along with this was a torn or punctured area that had been leaking all the bad stuff. A fairly large area of her intestines were very infected, along with other parts of her. This is late Friday evening that the surgeon tells me this, and then tells me that she may not pull through due to the infection and damage it had caused. Heart stopping to go in for flu and end up thinking she may not make it out of hospital. The surgery lasted about 6 hours or so, and he felt it went very well. Found out later that this is the hospitals best surgeon--he was, up until about 6 months ago, operating on our soldiers in Afgahnastan, where he was the head trama surgeon for a period of about 2 years. He said this was like putting on a bandade compared to what he has seen. Anyways, miracle 1. Her fever broke completely today and her pulse is down to normal. We had our first pretty good conversation today. They are still pumping her stomach to keep it clean, but she may be able to come off of that tomorrow. If you could pray for her, we need her stomach and intestines to "Wake up" and start working the way they should. That will give us the green light to pull a lot of the equipment that has been helping her, but also makes it hard for her, and stop using it. I think it's tough for her to think about this incision they made--it is over a foot long from the middle of her chest to her belly button. I am just greatful she is alive and improving. I am very greatful for the outpouring of support from you all as well. I was able to finally read all of the comments to her tonight from my phone. She was visably touched, as was I. Thanks for all of this--it's amazing what becomes important in a time like this--and I do so appreciate all of you that commented and texted. I am still running on adrenelene, but am starting to hit the wall. I am home with kids tonight having just left Cassie as she dozed off. Thanks again for the prayers and well wishes--it really did encourage us tonight. Hope you guys had a great time with your fam's today. I'll post an update in the next couple of days. They are saying a week in the hospital from today as long as everything goes well, then about 6 weeks down time from there to recover. We appreciate you all and thank you again.

Doug

So glad to hear that she is getting better. I pray that this road to recovery continues on this path. You guys are in my thoughts...

Just logged on for the first time in a while and saw this thread. Doug, glad to hear Cassie is on the road to recovery. My father recently had a very similar problem and surgery and I know what it's like. It wasn't until we got him out of that bed and walking around the hospital floor did his digestive system restart itself. I wish the very best for her continued recovery. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

sik68 12-26-2011 08:25 AM

Thoughts and prayers from here too, Doug. It is great to hear her condition improving.

Doug and Cassie,

Romans 8

31 What then are we to say about these things?
If God is for us, who is against us?

32 He did not even spare His own Son
but offered Him up for us all;
how will He not also with Him grant us everything?

MaxHarvard 12-26-2011 05:28 PM

I'm glad she's doing better!

Just saw this thread - wow! Doug - wishing you and your entire family the very best and hoping for a speedy recovery for your wife. An awful set of circumstances and scary for sure but it sounds like she is starting with a strong recovery. Only an hour away - just let me know what you need - just an email/txt/call and I'm there. Anything man. Big prayers for Big D and family.

Hang in there and have Faith! Your in my prayers.

DFRESH 12-29-2011 10:03 AM

Good news

They took the stomach pump off of her last night and this morning her stomach and related intestines are working well. She starts a clear diet today and looks like she will be coming home tomorrow as long as all goes well. We will have about a 6 week recovery period, but it looks like I have care lined up for her during that time.

Can't tell you how great you all have been---I sincerely do appreciate my extended car guy/gal family. I am very grateful for all of the messages here, the texts, phone calls and prayers you made for Cassie. Even the doc said this was an amazing case the way it all has worked out. Thank you all for your support. I'm not going to lie, this was a tough one, especially since I had to reacquiant myself with the washing machine, fyring pan, vacume cleaner and the almighty toilet brush since the kids are here with me. Gotta go grocery shopping now for blan stuff----can't tell you how happy I am to have to do it. Thank you to all of you again----looking forward to RTTC in March--we will celebrate then at my place with the Taco/Apple Pie party.

Doug

Ok...then, thanks for the update Doug. All this must be working, so I'm sending more good thoughts and vibes your way again today. Hang in there buddy.

Spiffav8 12-29-2011 12:26 PM

Great update Doug. Obviously that Doctor doesn't know how amazing the :lateral: bunch is. Just ask us...we'll tell ya. ;)

Hey good on you for picking up on all that Cassie normally does. I'm sure it helps keep things in perspective and increases the level of appreciation for all she does on a daily basis. To easy to over look sometimes in the day to day routine. Enjoy the grocery store. lol Yeah I hate that place.

Cassie I am very excited to hear how well you are doing. Honestly, it sounds like a pretty impressive recovery. Stay positive, laugh as much as you can, drink all your milk and eat all your veggies. Looking forward to meeting you sooner than later!

Now....where are those Tacos and that Apple Pie.

waynieZ 12-29-2011 12:40 PM
