What?

Because they flow reasonably well and are quiet. I run stock GM f-body system on my car and it's nice and quiet. I must be getting old...I enjoy my car so much more now that it's quiet. I like to drive hard on the street and I don't like to announce it to everybody:unibrow:

Do not, I repeat, do not take this guys advice on mufflers unless you like open headers on your daily driver. Ha ha

No, I mean, like, why are the "turbo" style quieter?

badmatt 04-15-2012 11:48 AM

Mufflers?

Ill be running dynomax bullets. and that's about it. Or a centered nascar style boom tube.

they snake through the muffler casing passing the glass insulation the whole time as opposed to chambered styles where its got no insulation or ones like the xr1s where they do have a insulation but its straight through design.

I am ready to pull the trigger on Stainless works mufflers but the Flowmaster 40's make me pause.

unless you like drone, stick with the stainless works. I will call you tomorrow.

I took a long look at those Aerochambers... the internals look interesting.. and I've heard them on an LT1 Malibu and they sounded amazing...

Would love to hear more feedback from others running them...

I need to take a video of the 455 Pontiac with Magnaflow, sounds great. The 480hp crate LS3 with DSE headers was just plain nasty sounding when you stepped on it.

OKay. hurry up with the video!! You've got plenty of time on your hands.. LOL

Magnaflow, 2.5 with an Xpipe, Had Flowmasters on my 70 Monte Carlo and hated the drone sound.

researching mufflers Rob? By the way, I would want to know how loud, or how much resonance each of the mufflers had at 1800rpm where they all tend to drone a little bit (or a lot).

John510 08-05-2012 01:59 PM

Cool!

Now which one sounds the best? I don't mind giving up a few hp for a better sound.

I hear that but it is totally subjective. Flash recommends straight pipes. :unibrow:

In between searching for Ford GT seats

Always researching each piece to try to avoid doing any one thing twice.

I agree on the drone. I'm thinking Borla stainless right now, maybe even a secondary resonator out back by the fuel cell, but we'll see.

I agree on straight pipes... and GT seats shouldnt be THAT hard to find...

edit: took me 30 seconds.

Thanks for posting that. Anything to help get him off my back is much appreciated

Rob, I would suggest you catch a ride in my car with Magnaflows, or Gregg's with Borlas, but those are both LS powered cars and an old school Ford would sound entirely different. Personally, I would try and find out what a set of Bassani mufflers would sound like. They have perforated chamber walls, but I think they also have a straight through passage. They might give you a nasty old school sound with a twist. They made the wimpy little 4.6 3V in my old car sound downright mean too!

I can find anything in 30 sec if $$ is no object.

I don't need a muffler to enhance the sound I need one to tone it down, remember this isn't an LS it doesn't need help sounding like a real motor.

Mufflers are like wheels so many choices and in some ways it is very subjective. The db figures I posted only tell you level of sound. Also the hp and torque difference in the top tier is negligible.

I had already seen that post on the GT forum but read it again the guy decided he wanted to keep the seats. I'm still stalking you buddy. :D

There was another guy selling a set at the bottom of the post. I messaged him. I'm pretty sure if I buy them I can flip them

Seriously though, you should see if they're for sale. Or post a wanted add. There are probably a few of those cars that have been turned into standing mile cars and I bet a few seats that could use homes.

X2 builders buys a lot of wrecked vipers and has a few wrecked GT's they might be an option as well.

Good luck flipping them at a profit

I never uploaded it to youtube, but I did another video, its all optical illusion. The tires I have on there are over 2 inches wider (which is funny for being the same size) and they fit fine. The axle only walks about 1/4 of an inch.

I'll add my 2 cents, and a lot of $$.

I went through, a long evolution, in the muffler department. I started with the magnaflow 2.5 kit for the 'stangs.

At 2000 rpm, I had an obnoxious drone. Considering that from 1700-2300 rpm was cruising speed, it was not long before I changed the mufflers.

I changed to 19" magnaflow mufflers. Quieter, but still droned and resonated at the same rpms.

After researching, I found that some people had added a tee'd resonator, to their tailpipes, to eliminate the drone.

I did that. The "science" is that the tube, is to be 50% of the tail pipe length.
It worked. My car sounded like a quiet luxury car. Way too quiet.

I tried to figure out a way that I could have the car be noisier when I want and quieter when I want. I picked up a pair of summit cutouts and fabricated them into the tailpipe tee's. It worked perfectly. Quiet so I could listen to the radio, and noisier when I shut out the resonator tubes.

http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/i...t/100_3584.jpg

http://i550.photobucket.com/albums/i...t/100_3586.jpg

Then off came the 19" magnaflows, and on went the 14" magnaflows again, along with the installed resonator tubes.
This was better, flicking an electric switch, let me choose what sound level I wanted, quiet or noisy.

Still droned though, when through the muffler.

The other 2 problems were; I was carrying around an extra 10-20 pounds of hardware under the car, and it was in the way of my rear brake cooling ducts.

Screw-it, I decided to bite the bullit and get a pair of patriot varaflow mufflers.
Pricey but I really love them, and wish I would have discovered them sooner. Essentially they are a stainless 2 1/2" glass pack, with an electric flapper valve in the middle. Closed, the sound goes through the mesh and fiberglass surround. Open, basically like a glass pack.
One advantage, over the electric resonator set up I had before, is that you can vary the flapper part-way, and have something between loud and quiet, if you want.
They only come in 2 1/2" though.

Oh yeah, they do not drone... even in the open, louder mode.

Richio1 08-06-2012 05:15 PM

I've got Flowmaster Super 40's on a 383 and love them. Some drone but not too bad. Plus FLowmaster is up here in Nor Cal so I want to support the local manufacturers as much as possible.

I will tell you what, I LOVED the sound of the DSE 69 Camaro when Staci was running it out at GG Pleasanton AC earlier this year. It was loud but sounded sexy in all the right ways.

They are running the Borlas but I am not sure which models.

I dont know, I'm just not on board with all the Magnaflow guys. I agree they sound really good when accelerating hard but other than that I dont care for the sound much.

transam 08-06-2012 05:24 PM

I run magnaflows on my mustang. Turbo car so its barely louder than stock,on my trans am i run magnaflows and its way too loud for me,i will most likely switch to a 50 or 70s series flowmaster
