Got the old frame out

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...75758086_n.jpg

Then i got a 67 chevelle steering column, floor shift, from my boss with some sort of camaro steering wheel on it. i kinda like it so it will stay until i find something better. Took it completely apart and clean, re-greased everything, and threw in a new turn signal switch while i was there. besides the switch i got it for a whopping $Free.99!

Evan Iroc-Z 09-03-2013 06:04 AM

That's an IROC steering wheel, that looks to be in good shape. If you have the horn button they fetch a decent amount of money. I had looked at replacing mine at one point in time and they were going for $200 in good condition. The horn buttons alone go for $50-100. Of course, all things relative with pricing, this is a product of the '80s we are talking about.

Sonar Chief 09-03-2013 06:59 AM

:gitrdun: Ya never know what's under a pretty paint job do you? Glad you got that old paint off, now the fun starts :superhack:

Keep at it and then it's done!

Ripped 09-03-2013 03:57 PM

Looks like it's starting to shape up... just keep the updates coming!

67goatman455 09-03-2013 04:45 PM

Thanks guys! i love comments so keep them coming!

The steering wheel isnt flawless, it has a nick out of it and no horn button, i cant imagine anyone paying money for it but ill look at ebay haha

Well lets see. to start off, i got the new frame under the car and got one of the wheel wells cut out so i can widen it. It took some self motivation to start cutting :_paranoid

here is the frame clearance after notching the frame, as well as the coil-over bar clearance although im waiting for my ABC solid body mounts to show up before concluding anything there.

https://sphotos-a-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/h...25238886_n.jpg

Then on labor day i went with some friends to Hallet raceway. I couldn't drive this time since i dont think a civic would be very fun. But ill throw up a picture of my last car i took. That what got me hooked to go RACECAR with the GTO haha.

https://sphotos-a-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/h...83234644_n.jpg

Ended up selling this and buying a honda so i could get the GTO done but this was good times.
https://sphotos-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/h...29031541_n.jpg

Anyways, out first session out (me passenger) we were probably having a little too much fun and ended up in a tire barrier. ended our day pretty quickly. It was a nice reminder than a cage is needed, the tires like to flip cars over at this track a lot.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...34654800_n.jpg

67goatman455 09-05-2013 08:20 PM

Well first off, after burning through my first loan already, and having one more $5k loan left, It's really starting to set in that im completely screwed on getting this car together with $10k. :lostmarbles: One of the big killers is that i dont want to settle for crappy suspension and the rest of the ride-tech stuff i haven't bought yet is $3k just by itself. :shakehead: :drowninga:

Anyways, this is what signified the end of my first loan, and the first new parts i have bought for the car, everything until these have been used. ABC solid body mounts... $400 freaking dollars....and you wont even see them.....not very happy about it, but its not exactly something you can buy used.

https://sphotos-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/h...56683198_n.jpg

anyways, i got the tubs out and going to start the widening of them, turns out ill be doing 1-1/2" strips. The FORGELINE's barely fit, so the quarter panels will get widened to accommodate

67goatman455 09-18-2013 08:25 PM

Ok, had to wait for my regular bank account to gain life again so i could get a welding bottle. But got the wheel tub widened and welded back in.

decided to give myself some motivation today.

big block chevelle stands, cant recall the motor mounts, and the adapters are edelbrock. 2" between the back of the block and firewall.

Che70velle 09-20-2013 06:02 PM

Loving this! Looking great!

67goatman455 09-20-2013 09:30 PM

Thanks guys! all comments welcome, especially if you see me messing something up haha.

After staring and measuring for a couple hours, ill be moving the engine back 3.5" (from current location) to help weight distribution. At first i was going to try 7" but finally decided there was way too much hacking involved. a simple flip around of the mounts and a little ingenuity on the block, and the mounts will work that i have.

This should give me plenty of room for any road race style pan i want, which i have been concerned with.

67goatman455 10-05-2013 07:04 PM

Been a while since i updated. lets see....

Other wheel tub finished
https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/...73457551_n.jpg

moved the engine back 3.5" required flipping the frame stands, and moved the motor plate back on the drivers side to the other 2 locations on the block. The passenger side only had a 5th hole.... so after talking to GFORCE1320 (they are local to me) they came up with modifying the adapter plate easily to still use the regular 4 holes on the passenger side.

https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/...64565773_n.jpg

https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/...23734353_n.jpg

Before flipping the mounts i cut a hole in the firewall
https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/...67335419_n.jpg

Welded on the frame repair washers. they were rusted through.

Those wheels look so badass on there. That's a good stance too. Is it what you're shooting for?

haha thanks. i love em! I am shooting for.....as low as i can haha

Che70velle 10-06-2013 12:13 PM

Scott, if you move that baby back any further, you'll be able to work the throttle with your right hand, instead of right foot. I can't wait for more updates! Love the wheels and the stance!

haha, i was considering going back further but worried about changing plugs. i guess i could just do it from the drivers seat huh LOL

A little more progress. I'm working on buying a house so i'm wanting the transmission supported for the ride to the new house, which im hoping for before thanksgiving.

So onto the frame bracing. 1.5"x.095 1020 DOM - NASA Legal :D

Fuel cell cage is mostly done. The idea is there so far at least. Kind of wondering how it will come into play with a possible watts link Not sure if a Fays-2 will still work with the coil-overs

Just read from beginning! Nice project and i like your idea to expell the bad stuff your dad did to your "soul" by working on this thing!! I can relate to weird family stuff....

I wanted to say keep the good work up and also, i noticed your trans mount... You might know already but the poly mount is available shorter so it would leave you some meat on the support itself to weld your pass thru for exhaust. (I know you said its just temporary....but we dont go thru all the hassle of doing the exhaust ports on temporary parts...:poke: )

Tought it could help!!

Love the project, keep us posted!

Lead.

I guess what i was meaning was the x-member wasn't finished, not that its temporary. I was going to gusset both sides of the exhaust pass through. But im interested in this shorter mount now, i had no idea it was available.

Leadfoot1 11-17-2013 11:18 AM

Yep, they are available in all sort of heights (thickness) and and combos to fit your need.

I didnt mean any negative with previous comment... Just teasin' ya! :innocent:

At this point im trying to decide how the door bars are going to go. Im trying to be NASA legel yet completely street-able. Trying to find out how legal removable door bars are.

Che70velle 03-03-2014 08:12 PM

Looks killer! Is that a kit, or are you building this cage?

67goatman455 03-04-2014 04:59 PM

Your tellin me! lol I have decided to go with door bar swing-outs and praying that they will pass tech at NASA events if i decide to race in one. I have tried going through as many channels as i can on the subject and it seems like it will be okay. The best i found is FIA rules on removable bars so ill roll the dice, get these: http://www.cachassisworks.com/p-529-...-134-tube.aspx and hope nothing is said
