I happened across this thread tonight - I had no idea you were building a full frame racer as well. We are moving in slightly different paths - you are going toward full race and I am moving back toward some race, some street. I had a new 10 GS Vette for a bit and had to sell it because every rock chip drove me batsh!t crazy so I learned I like 'em a little ugly and fast, not shiny and fast, as well.
I love the DTM stuff as well and thought about doing something like that with the Nova - when I found myself needing to narrow the front track to get the 12" tires in there I thought about pulling the whole fender out and just adding a 2" step at the rear of the front fender, similar to your rendering. Going that route with a Camaro should be pretty wild looking. I would stick with a rough look as you suggest you might for awhile - I don't plan to paint the Nova until I have a fair amount of track time on it and have done some sorting, because part of sorting tends to be a few off-track excursions that are hell on paint and low altitude front splitters. I have mowed a fair amount of lawn with my 914's splitter and my fiberglass nose has some damage to prove it  As for that thrift store, holy hats Batman! I have never seen so many hats in one place in my life, let alone calipers. Those AP brakes are certainly nice. Subscribed - between your thread and a few that others that are posting here have going, I should get plenty of ideas for changes as my car progresses. |
That's going to be a sweet project Payton. I'll be watching this?

This car is gonna be badass I can't wait to see this one.

Thanks guys
This one is definitely going to be on the edge of being street car, but if you not living on the edge you are taking up too much room.

Here is another rendering
that someone did that got me thinking about the DTM style...almost made me do a Cuda that Ron had.

Love the direction you are going with this. Both "renderings" are cool!!
|
Looks good! See if you can build it to fit the NASA Outlaw Vintage specs so we can play around on the track some in the next year or so. Don't plan on painting mine anytime sone, Flat black fenders are easy to bolt on an blend in with the rest of the car! LOL

now that is pretty awesome, has the front fender pushed out like I was mentioning. I am not a fan of the latest, really choppy rear shaping on the cars - I am sure the aero is important but at the same time, loses a little form for the sake of function. You are killing me Payton - I really want the Nova to look like a sleeper and have stock body form but now I am starting to think I should pull the fenders out front and rear :D Running the exhaust down behind the rockers and dumping out like a sidepipe would be fricken cool tho' |
Payton,
Can't wait for this car to make some progress. Very cool. |
I have been out on Spring Break with my kids
Will get frame photos posted up soon.
There will be a lot of mock up before I settle on any body mods, those renderings were just giving me idea. Tim, it would be tough not to have a wide body something after the 914. |

Yes it is a swiss flag.
The guy that did the drawing is from there I believe. I think his name is Zonder?

The fire is lit! Really like the all business approach of their design and fabrication.

Way to hit the ground running Payton.

Excellent job on the frame

Gonna be a track beast.

Very Nice Payton!

This car is going to be really cool. I agree with no more show cars make them so you can drive them. I don't want to have to worry about scratches or nicks on the car. |
This has been going on for a while
Figured that I would get some work done and not stretch the build thread out for 2 years.
I got some mock up engine parts from my friend Jim Pettigrew, who works for Hendrick and did some work on the yellow car. These parts were sent up to Jake. SB2.2 heads from a blown up Cup motor, the motor plate is mine that I got from Hendrick. Mock up oil pump and a set of tri-y style stainless headers from I believe Jimmy Johnson's car. They are made by Pro Fab. 5 gallon Peterson oil tank. So my thrift shop buys are the oil tank, headers and motor plate. http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pscb594119.jpg http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psd883a0f6.jpg http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...ps539f62f7.jpg |
Awesome Payton! Any idea if the headers will actually fit or do you need to mock up and see? Where's the oil tank going?
|
Hey Ron
Oil tank will be in the trunk or rear seat area.
Headers are up there to see if they clear. I can get different Y's and a different merge collector if needed as they all slide on. More concerned with floor clearance. They should clear everywhere else or with a small amount of additional fab work. Figure these new are $3600 and I can get them for $600...way cheaper than having a custom set made. |
You know I like your style Mr Dead Cat.
What are the dimensions of that tank (when you get a chance)? |
Can't wait to see this one come together!
|
"this is ****ing awesome!"
Please ensure you leave enough room for the sound system to play this on continuous loop. Never heard it before but... Quote:

Tank
is pretty big....22 inches by 9 inches. Although they call them a 5 gallon tank(total volume), you normally run about 3 gallons in them.
|
Hey Payton,
This is going to be a wicked ride. If you are through Atlanta again, give me a holler. Jim Quote:

Very nice work
If you don't mind can I ask what size rect. tubing did you use for the the frame rails and the round supports?
Shane Quote:
|
I can tell just by looking at the tubing its 2x4 tubing, looks like Jake snuck a piece of 3x4 in there where the core support bolts on,and 2x3 for the trans crossmember. Don't know for sure, but looks like 1 3/4" round tubing on the center there. I'm running the same front clip on the AMX I'm building.
I really like the minimal nature of Jake's frame, keeps the weight down knowing that there will be alot of cage work holding it all together. Loving this build so far. |
Ron is correct
The 2x3 for the torque arm crossmember was done like that so when I run 3 inch exhaust it will not hang below the frame...Jake's idea
|
Another thrift shop purchase
Magnesium Quarter Master bell housing, flywheel, Tilton tri-lite throw out bearing, Quarter Master 7.25 triple disc clutch and billet starter....$500 for all.

I must have gotten drunk and missed this thread! WTF.....
Love the direction Payton! This is gonna be fun! And I like Swartz's (did I get that spelling right?) comment about cheap = fun.... Every time I see the Mustang I bought from Charley -- I think -- Dude! That's the most fun in the shed - and also the cheapest! |
