Some progress pics on the Chevelle!

With the taillight surround sheetmetal finalized, we could begin the engineering portion of the new taillight assembly:

The talilights will have a similar light pattern as the fronts with the long center trim housing the 'Chevrolet' letters which will serve as the third brake light.

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3820/9...69c4db8e_b.jpg

We also have a good direction for the interior with the narrowed up dash and gauge cluster, custom gauges and iPod mini integration. The center console will also feature capacitive touch surfaces for much of the regular switch functions and GSM push button shifter. Oh and a cupholder!

Sheetmetal work on the front end is also underway with the new opening and trim pieces being created.

I don't care who has a TV show, or books, or sells the most merchandise, etc. You guys are the BEST OF THE BEST. You guys can do it all. Top notch fab, design and manufacture awesome parts, etc. I just wished I could hang out and watch the talent.

My stance remains the same as before. When my $hip comes in I'm forwarding it to you guys at RS :)

Yup, after 20 years of this hobby that's the conclusion I've come to as well (although I'd have to visit Ironworks as CA is a lot closer to me).

Now, where is my $hip ? I'm running out of time here. Oh well, in the meantime I'll do everything myself an try to learn what I can from the great fab photos.

It's time for you to take a Road trip to the Midwest Plenty of awesome shops out this way. There are even a couple garage builders out here that have competed for the Ridler and made the Great 8. I am thinking it has something to do with the cold winters or the freaking snow.

We have been very busy with Tim's 64 over the past few months. Here is the picture recap of what we have been up to.

Finished up all of the metal work on the nose of the car for now. Headlights and grille still to come.

Wanted to try something different than the standard smooth or bead rolled look for the firewall so we fabbed this up.

Removed the stock piece that looked like it was blasted with a shot gun

And welded i the new panel.

Here is a look into the engine compartment and how it was built.

We also decided to smooth and simplify the windshield cowl panel for a cleaner look:

One detail that seemed to scream out to us from day one when we got the car was the awkward intersect of the forward corner for the door, cowl and fender.

A few tape lines later and we had a plan to bring it all together a little more elegantly...

me too....everytime I look at these and then go out to the shop to do the same, I end up with a hot mess. Fascinating how the pro's make it look so easy.

jsr69 11-27-2013 11:37 AM

I have a dumb question because I can't tell from the pictures, are the fender wells, close out panels, etc. in the engine compartment aluminum or steel?

waynieZ 11-27-2013 12:34 PM

And I worry how to get the gaps straight. Thank God for craftsman like you guy's

WSSix 11-28-2013 08:46 AM

Love it! The firewall is a good departure from the normal smooth firewall look. Good job guys.

Everything under the hood is aluminum on this build.

Roadster Shop 11-29-2013 11:25 AM

Thanks to everyone else for the responses. Here is a little further work on the dash.

Tim wanted to keep the original shape of the dash, but narrow up the gauge area. We also wanted to get rid of a lot of the clutter in the rest of the original dash.

To start, we narrowed up the original gauge cluster portion of the dash to figure out the size that we wanted for the opening.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...psb0909353.jpg

Then cut everything apart and re-shapped the dash, smoothed the lower portion, and added in a 69 Camaro glove box door to flow better with the new dash shape.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...psb1a34ed3.jpg

All metal finished and smooth

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps1ab4d420.jpg

We will come back and machine a new gauge bezel to fit the narrowed opening.

The multitude of tweaks and fixes on this car are just superb. Great job!

TimMc 11-29-2013 05:51 PM

great work

Wow the change to the doors is the way the factory should have done it. Great build guys.
