tubbed69 10-07-2013 05:46 PM

Congrats on the successful trip,I bet it was a good time,do you have a vent on your tank?

glassman 10-07-2013 06:12 PM

Yeah, its been vented and revented, i think there either may be fuel or a pinch in my hard line, but my venting hose goes up above the tank and i believe its routed correctly, still may be a baffling issue. One thing we noticed (David Pozzi to give credit where credit is due) spotted the filler tube goes all the way down to the bottom of the tank. I get the car home on thursday, so up on stands it goes (it seems to like being worked on, kind of like a chick hooked on plastic surgery)

Hey Mike,

It was great meeting you and some of the other Lat-G guys last weekend. I enjoyed hearing about your trek from the west coast in spite of your drivetrain difficulties. I also enjoyed checking out your ride as I am headed in the same direction with my '72. I can only hope to have mine as far along and at next years Good Guys alongside yours.

Looking forward to hearing you've sorted everything out and are back on the road soon in spite of your busy schedule.

Thanks again for taking the time to share and I hope to see you guys back in the Big D next year.

Joe

glassman 10-09-2013 07:28 PM

Thanx Joe, it was nice meeting you too. I cant wait to do it again, although if it goes as good as it did, i may just go tag florida.....

just to clear up some of the questions that were posted before, in case someone is losing sleep over it:
The fuel pump was indeed causing our cut-out issues. But we did chase the traction control stuff all the way through that computer. Dang, they hid stuff everywhere. We went back to the GTO computer because the f-body computer didn't like the GTO oxygen sensors. Somewhere in one of these posts by glassman there's a youtube link of it cutting out. I'll post it here, just in case: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NsnFdl6wzo
you can see the fuel pressure plummet under load.

and the clutch didn't need to be bled. The problem ended up being a combination of not enough shimming for the pilot bearing on the new front plate conversion and too much preload on the input shaft behind the front plate conversion. When we switched from LT1 front plate to LS1 front plate my brother put an extra shim in the input shaft bearing recess and it spec'd out fine.. except when we torqued down the front plate it got too tight in there so it was making the first few gears tough to shift into. We must've had the transmission out 3 or 4 times on that one. (and I thought I was fast at pulling T56's before.. I got it down to a science now)

now if we could only get the tank to full, we'd be in pretty good shape.

if you're more interested in some chatter on the build, I threw up a quick blog post on it, too.

P.S. Sorry to hijack your thread, glassman, just wanted to tie up the loose ends on some of the questions and talk a little more about the build. I'm sure some of you like to stick your noses under the hood a little bit :unibrow: I know I do!

The way i see it Josh is that its your thread too, without you, i'd still be small block. I am sold on LS power now.

Chassis next!!!!

glassman 10-14-2013 06:43 PM

I think thats the one, thanx Vince.

I looked on their site last nite, and was like "you guys seriously make that many different wheels?" wow.

glassman 12-22-2013 07:38 AM

Well after two months of research: front clip vs. control arms and steering, tomorrow she's going to Custom Works in Chico for a little work

March "sport track" accessories
Speedtech upper and lower CA's
AFCO adj coil-overs
Custom Works sub frame connectors
GM new steering box 14:5-1 i believe
Power coat existing subframe assembly
Hooker headers new ones
Hooker engine mounts and crossmember

So I decided to do this over the subframe change out for a couple of reasons:
#1 I'm a "good" driver but not great, need more saddle time so I wont be able out drive my talent for quite some time.
#2 $6300 to $7200 plus exhaust, brakes, and other incidental's adds up quick vs $4200 and i get to keep the Baer "track" brakes i have on it now, which are good, but not as "good" as what would of came on a subframe set up.
#3 Hooker's new set-up i saw at SEMA was a serious seed for me, pretty much turn key and gets all the angles and clearances just right for a good price and minimal headache, i've been through enough with the LS swap as it is.

So as she sits now, the Dynatech headers sit 2.375 from finished floor to bottom of collector now, I've got the trans-adapt engine mounts at their highest setting (my t-56 is 3/16 from the tunnel), I may be able to get the Dynatech exhaust to work as its 22.5 C/L right now and the Hooker setup is 20.5 c/L. So in my opinion, the collector is just too low.

I currently have 0 steering under "autocross" conditions, something we did in the swap with the reservoir effed up my steering, plus i needed a new box anyways, 2 to 3 inches of play was a little much. The car steers fine on the freeway and left and right turns, but when forced, it hydraulically locks up.

Plus my alternator being so low took away Ackerman angle so the geometry is off, which could be adding to the problem, when i "jerk" the steering wheel.

So moving the alternator, new power steering box, and adding a/c, was worth it to get the March "sport track" kit, $1450 vs $2400 for the Wegnar, while i like the Wegner setup more, a grand is a grand (less new water pump), so we'll see if this March set-up is worth the 850 or so, cause i've "bought" many a headache's in the past by trying to save money. With three kids in college right now, yes, life is very expensive. So hopefully, in a month or so, i'll have a front suspender set up ALOT more dialed in than what i have now...

Now, to ponder the rear....

glassman 12-22-2013 10:16 AM

how she sits now

Vince@Meanstreets 12-22-2013 01:37 PM

I would not worry at all about the subframe. They are great with a few modifications and reinforcments. Just Keiths addition of the Delphi box will wake it up nicely.
Keith will give it the run through. Talk him into making composite wheel houses for you too!! For that much needed tire space.

Add a power steering cooler to your list while you're at it if you plan to auto-x, it will save your pump and box.

cooler yep, thats in keiths repertoire.

WSSix 12-22-2013 06:24 PM

You've basically listed the same reasons I intend to keep my front sub as well, Mike. I can't afford a new front subframe and rear suspension. I'd love to go with one of Scott's front ends but I simply can't justify changing out the entire front sub either. Good luck with it. Let us know how you like it once it's back together.

Yeah Trey, i will. Take the difference (($) between the two and by something that wont depreciate, ;)

I have three kids in college right now, been saving since '98, still not enough. so priorities are kids education, retirement funds, then car.....

maxxom 01-03-2014 05:56 PM

Can't wait to see some pics on the track in action.

glassman 01-06-2014 07:55 PM

So the subframe before powder:

Vince@Meanstreets 01-06-2014 08:19 PM

your gonna love that steering box and frame stiffiner bar.

glassman 01-06-2014 08:22 PM

Boy Vince, anything was gonna help. I fried my power steering box by trying to run a "nice" reservoir and the 43 year old box moved 2.5" before engagement. Now I can really learn how to drive.....slideways...

syborg tt 01-07-2014 07:26 AM

Mike the car is coming along nicely. I can't wait to here your feedback on the set up from Custom Works & SpeedTech.

ks71z28 01-07-2014 10:23 AM

Car is coming along very well. What no comments on R&R of the subframe with the motor in the car? Mike's car will have near identical steering and suspension upfront that I run on my car. Car should be back on the road in less than 2 weeks!

Seemed strange to leave the motor in. But I did meet you in person so it all makes sense.

WSSix 01-07-2014 05:33 PM

lol, nice!!

So does that frame bar really work that well?

Looking good, Mike.

Its looking great, it should make a big difference with all those new parts.

Took 7 hours to swap bar frames out, you tell me how long it would take to remove hood, disconnect all engine components, pull motor and trans, etc.... It really was the best way to go

The 2G frame brace counteracts the forces applied from the sway bar. Works great and adds minimal weight

gerno 01-13-2014 11:08 PM

Looks real good, I feel like a slacker with all your progress. Have you test fitted the new headers for fitment?
