Rob,

If it's 0° here and 5° in NH when you arrive, maybe I should take the short 10.5 hour drive "South East" to warm up.

If you guys' take 95 south you will be driving about 20 miles west of me through Prvidence RI . If you came down 95 or rt 93 to rt 24 you would drive right by my house in Fall River Ma. I'll be here if you need me or if you want some good Portugese food.
I didn't get to meet up with Rob at Cars and Coffe when I was in Cali for my daughters wedding.

I'm just east of Memphis, very close to I-40. Beale Street has already been mentioned along with Graceland for touristy stuff. There are plenty of good BBQ joints around town along with Italian, Korean, Ethiopian, you name it.

I have welders, compressor and tools. A large shop you could drive into with a lift. A local good friend that is a dyed-in-the-wool Ford fanatic with probably a spare everything for that truck.

Safe travels and look me up if I can help!

Jeff-

Thanks Jeff! I spent a weekend in college in Memphis and am looking forward to stopping there again. Appreciate the offer.

I'll echo everyone about avoiding I-95 at all costs, DC has the worst traffic I've ever seen. I would take I-81 and drop down to I-40. You guys are welcome to stop by Jet Hot and check out the toy box, we are right on I-40/85 just east of the I-85 split to Charlotte. Oh you can bring Payton along too, he keeps threatening to come by here but I have yet to see the whites of his eyes. We have a few Ferds for Rob but some are Chevy powered :whistling: If you have interest in stopping by pm me.

If your around Hartford Plan B has good burgers and is pretty quick for a sit down (lunch) dinners / fridays get busy
http://www.planbburger.com/flash.html

If your traveling down in New Haven via 91 (you can still pick up 87 around NYC before it gets bad) Pepe's Pizza is a awesome place. Its in the top 10 in US all the time.

Word of advice don't fill up in CT our gas tax is out of control. Try to fill up in MA even if you don't really need it.

Nick

SSLance 01-08-2014 05:19 AM

How big is the gas tank on that rig anyway? If it's less than 35 gallons you can plan on stopping for fuel every couple of hours to rest your butts and stretch your legs.

Wonder if Google calculated that in when the 49 hours was estimated for travel time? :D

Turns out I couldn't get a CCP in New Hampshire for these badd boys. :shakehead:

Jay and ABS is about 5 miles form my front door... and I have a route through MA that will save you a few miles.. would love to meet uo with you guys.

GregWeld 01-08-2014 07:16 AM

I'm beginning to see why I can never make the time that GPS says... You make an epic trip like this - there's no way I CAN'T stop by every shop along the way... it just doesn't make any sense to be that far from home - and not enjoy the sights.

Oh! Wait.... it sucks to be you two because you have to get back to work. Sorry I even mentioned it. Stupid me! LOL

No matter what, I'm in love with the hauler. Those things just keep popping up on my radar. I would love to find one and put a Diesel motor in and still be able to tow a 24" enclosed trailer.

I'm with Brett on this one! I had one of these for a tow truck many years ago.Bring lots of fuel money for fuel:G-Dub: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I was getting 6-7 miles to a gallon..

Well.... yeah.... you do need an appreciation for good food. They don't serve booze unless by special arrangement... and by the time DG spends his IRA on fuel and tires... McDonalds will be on the top of the food chain.

LOL

My only issue with this whole trip is that I'm not going along for the ride....

Too bad they're hauling that Camaro because they can't strap a 1000 gallon fuel bladder on the hog. :D

Does the Camaro in question still have a usable gas tank? If so, problem solved. Bring a hose that reaches the truck filler from the Camaro tank and it should siphon in as needed since it's nice and high. You may need to get a mouth full to get it started and a little duct tape to keep it in place but no biggie. When you stop for fuel, just fill up both tanks.

Besides a diesel... what are you all towing with that gets such good MPG?? I never got better then 6-8 towing anywhere

Payton King 01-08-2014 11:43 AM

Hey Tim

I know where you shop is and how far it is from my house, but I have no idea how far it is from I-77/ I-40 junction at Statesville.

Tony_SS 01-08-2014 01:09 PM

I think it's all downhill on the way back so they are good to throw it in N and coast a ways.

Payton, my guess would be about 80-90 miles. I can make it to DSE in 1.5-1.75 hours from Jet Hot depending on how many times the tires touch the road. Oh yeah there's some small brewery just east of the 40/85 split but I can't remember the name.

Edit... here it is http://www.redoakbrewery.com/home.php

A full Camaro tank should give them an additional 90 mile range with a tailwind. :tiptoe:

Haven't put too much thought into yet. Since the truck will be sitting in my RV parking right next to the house, and I think the color is a close match to my house paint, I am thinking I like the red.

Wow! Wow! Wow! This trip is insane. I love it. Already enjoying following along and it hasnt even started. Cant wait for the post where you underestimated the cold and failed to pack anything to stay warm. Visions (disturbing visions) of the two of you cuddled up together on the side of the road waiting for help come to mind. :confused59:

But seriously... its been mentioned to have tools, fuel, and emergency towing, but... its freezing up there. Make sure you can stay warm enough for working on the car, waiting for help or even just being stuck in traffic that isnt going anywhere due to wintery road conditions.

Took Payton telling me to look at this thread for me to find it. This whole idea is stupid and impractical. That is why I love it, a couple of middle aged guys that are probably used to cruising at 80 on the highway. Rolling across the country at 55, while taching 4000rpm. What could go wrong. I just want to know what bet you lost, to put you in this predicament.

Just know I'm in Northern Maryland, not too far off I95. If you guys want to crash for the night, get a beer or need some help, just call. I'm a little leery offering you housing, you obviously aren't right in the head.LOL
