I didn't know pro-touring cars even existed anymore. :headscratch:
|
The Mustang is up for it, call her old reliable. Rides really nice too, surprisingly.
|
I've driven to every event so far (two) with 3 hrs each way the longest so far. For those that have done this without a trailer is an AAA membership credit card and some tools the way to go?? Perhaps smaller race trailer like DSE monster Camaro towed last year in one lap?
I don't really want to buy a trailer and go down that slippery slope for 3-4 events max each year. 1st enclosed trailer, then some shed out in Hailey Idaho cant swing like that yet. |

no tools, no trailer, just a wallet of cash (took 4 tanks of gas there and back) Arrived, let the air out. 4 passes, fastest being a 10.3 @ 130mph (note wheel spun first 60 feet or so, was hoping to crack into the 9's) Put air back in the tyres, drove her home. Never missed a beat |
My first out of town drive with my car was from California to Texas. Yep. Just a phone call away from a tow home is how i looked at it, needless to say, was still nervous. After the first phase, pleasanton good-guys to morgan hill, the hood came unlatched twice on the freeway (not up, but un latched), couldn't get more than 7 gallons in it (due to a flaw David Pozzi found a in the Ricks tank), check engine lite came on and lost my power steering.
Fixed the hood latch in the parking light, watched the gas mileage for the seven gallons problem, power steering well didnt need it going strait and said to myself "self, screw the check engine light" i know i've got oil and water..... Yep made 2076 miles on here maiden voyage, and got 24.8 mpg. But the first time on the autocross track at the pleasanton good-guys, broke down first run lol. |

Have your wife start hunting for a third job..... AAA and your cell phone.... and a credit card. I have the GOLD AAA card which will then include towing your "RV" (They didn't ask to see mine). I drove my '67 Vette BBC tri-power car from Seattle to Bloomington (Springfield) Indiana - via Jackson Hole and then up to Mt Rushmore. The alternator gave up on it 8 miles from "the corn palace town" in Mitchell So Dakota.... I just kept driving - and the chevy dealer there fixed it while Alex (who was 10 at the time) and I had some lunch. You'll always find someone that will help you... |

For some --- actual running driving cars ceased to exist.... |
I daily drive my sorry excuse for a race truck.

Based on the poll results I think it's pretty clear. The guys that actually drive their cars rarely post, the builds that will be passed down to generation after generation spend every waking hour on the site. :action-smiley-027:

Here's Todd.... HAHAHAHAHAHA |
Long distance? No sweat. That's what it was built for.... turn key reliability.

Its comes with some trepidation to go out on the road with something you've worked so hard for but in the end once you stop worrying about pot holes, weather, accidents, etc....the hum of that motor and the freedom of driving is fantastic. Its liberating and the memories & friends you make along the way are worth more than the intitial worries before hitting the road. I've upped my agreed value insurance and have my credit card ready. So for now no trailer no spare no problem. As for a third job? No thanks I'd rather invest in bitcoin lol. |
while not full on "pro touring" YET.. i would have no problems driving cross country in mine and i have several times.. NJ to CA via OH and back to OH. OH to TX to OH..
though my back would hurt from the 1979 worn out bench seat. and AC would be nice |

Been there, almost didn't get back. My 2nd event, and still very green. :hello: I dropped a rear wheel off the track at Music City 1 in the Parnelli, and crunched the back left. Didn't even know that my spare wouldn't fit over the bigger brakes that the Parnelli came with, plus it had staggered wheels. If it hadn't been for Jason at Gateway Classic Mustang loaning me their display wheel with BFG R1, I would have had tow charges, at least 1 extra day in hotel, taxis, and who knows what other expenses before I could get home, and that was just from Nashville to Memphis. Thanks again Jason!!! When I got home, I immediately started looking for used trucks and trailers, knowing that there was no way I would take that chance again with a high dollar car. I would drive Blu a few hundred miles, (not to race) and not be worried, but any further than that, and I'm taking the life boat. Now the JCG vette, Squirrelly, no worries! :geezer: |

I've been to maggy valley once and charlotte twice put over 2200 miles in and out of rain build it to drive
|
i pushed mine out of the garage for the first time in over a year, does this count? eventually i hope to get it dependable to take anywhere,i just have to stop coming up with new things to add so i can finish it and enjoy it.i really was trying to get it out to goodguys here in kissimmee but fell short.

I vote drive them! and is this the trailer you guys are referring to?http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps4eac6ddd.jpg
http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/u...psad2f9af6.jpg I really love driving the car I put over 3,000 miles a year on my car and drive it to the track pulling the camper trailer and road racing, drag racing and attempting to auto cross. it does not always work out the best but I put drivers insurance with towing up to 150 miles and a couple of years ago I broke the rear end and had it towed home on a flat bed. my idea is drive them and have fun with them.but I can also understand bringing a support vehicle with just to make it easy for the just in case. for me it is the adventure of the whole trip. |
Did you say trailer?
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps4293a4f7.jpg It now has new tires, good to go for our trip to Auto Club next weekend |

I think we've done 5 cross-USA trips in this rig over the years... you definitely learn how to fix 'em on the road. It's pretty well sorted out at this point... maybe it's time to tear it apart and do it differently!

I drive the Beach Cruiser to all the local autoX's 30-40 miles. Would drive it farther, but right now It's only on Hoosier A6's but I'm working on getting a set of Rivals for my spare wheels. It's kinda loud, but it rides good. Since every track event I've taken it to I've broken it, not ready to drive and race yet, but I'm pretty hard on it at the track trying to break it to find the weak links in it. It's headed to VIR this weekend, but on a trailer.

I voted 5 year plan. My hot rod is first priority but i should get that running by next summer. Then I will go the PT route |
Getting ready to do the power tour.. the drive from Wisconsin to maryland is going to be 14 1/2 hours according to mapquest..
The sad part for me, I think the camaro (with a 6 speed) gets the best gas mileage out of all the cars and truck I own.:lostmarbles: |

Me? When the Firebird is done it will be doing way more than 200 mile runs! Not for competition, for pleasure! |
/\/\/\/\/\/\ That is awesome!
I roadtest all of my projects at least 200-300 miles before they leave for drive tuning and shakedown. These cars like hiding surprises and you never know what is going to loosen up when they first hit the road. Lots of torqueing and retorqueing! After finishing the Chevelle build the owner flew out to DFW and we road tripped it back down to Miami Beach. Between driving around here, the road trip, a 2 hour backtrack because he left his wallet at a gas station, and driving around there we put 2200 miles on it in a week. 462ci blown, intercooled, EFI with 820 rwhp. Quick math put the mph at about 14 for the road trip with a glitchy TPS for 3/4 of the drive causing accel fuel to squirt everytime there was a light accel so I my guess is that it could get 16-18 highway now that the TPS is fixed. IMHO that is what pro-touring is about... the driving! http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/v...ps53abf7d1.jpg http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/v...psd177dc4b.jpg |

We finished our trip, left Friday 2:00 pm. got back Saturday at 11:00 pm I had a steel brake line crack. Found the issue on our first gas stop. Luckly car quest was open, and had a 30" brake line. 15 minutes later we were back on the road. Other than that, 650 miles + 5-25 minute ROVAL track sessions, all good. Of course, Toms car... never an issue 2 weeks we will be at Spring Mountain |
At the moment no. It won't move under its own power since the engine out & waiting on a clutch. Be another few months in the build then I'll have it back. I think it's about 150km to the shop that's doing it (I'm in aus so it's metric).
Once it's on the road it'll def be racking up the km's! Here's a link if anyone's interested. I can only post pics with tapatalk & it doesn't work on this forum so I haven't started one.. http://www.usmuscle.com.au/Forum/showthread.php?t=12534 Cheers |
You asked this question just as I was getting an 11 year build on the road.
Not ready for 200 miles yet, but give me a month or so to get familiar with the car and get some of the minor issues resolved. LS376/480 '68 Camaro with all aftermarket suspension. She's a beast. |
