Very nice build... I'm digging the way this is coming together. Please keep posting the progress pics.

There is so much I could have shared, this is really just a quick overview. The minutia of it all I wasn't sure people would want to see. |
After getting the car back on four wheels and seeing it outside I couldn't wait to hang the nose and stand back once more.
Here is what I saw for the first time……. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps1053e73e.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps11e3a896.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psaed7bbe4.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psad1ea57f.jpg |
A few days later when the weather cooperated I was able to push it back outside and see how it looks assembled.
I Like it!!! I also took some time to play with stripe ideas. My original plan was a Boss 302 hockey stick style stripe. But as I have been building this car that design has been used over and over agin, even on new cars. Ford is even using it now on the new trucks, doesn't make it very original at all now does it?! So here I am playing with a stripe design somewhat reminiscent of the the Must GT/Shelby's had. I of course don;t want to copy that, so I have not only extended them from the front valance all the way into the rear quarters. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pse0a748e6.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps8f1c9fc4.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps12e7d5d1.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps2d37a7a2.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps262d029b.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psf3602739.jpg The hood will also have my take on the factory Grabber stripe seen here in tape. I plan on also running them up onto the top of the dash as well just for the sake of doing it. Unsure if I will go with one solid stripe like this first one, or on the second U shape like seen below. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps68086148.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psf7cfd3fd.jpg |
This now brings us completely up to date. My hope was to finish up the body work and get it painted this winter, but since I haven't been in the garage since Christmas I can see that isn;t going to happen. I have been sick for a month with a cold that turned into a major case of Bronchitis. I am just now getting better. Hopefully color soon.
Any thoughts on my build? I like to hear what you guys think, both the good and the bad. I know this may not be the style or type of build most of you would do. It's just my take on a "what if" someone really decided to fine tune the unloved Maverick. Thanks for following along. Glenn |
This is a great looking build. Love this car.
Have one small comment you may want to take into consideration. I would suggest you smooth the top bar of the rad support if you have not already done so. Ask me how I know. I missed a small detail like this on my car and it looks me right in the face every time I open the hood. Good luck and looking forward to seeing the completed car. Neil B |
Wow...this is really, really, really cool. Excellent work, cant wait to see more !!
|
allot of attention to detail. I hot rodded a 70 once but was unable to complete it due to a divorce.
I hope you dont mind but I would love to copy your inner fender design on my Daughters 63 Fairlane. You are correct the R&C panels leave allot to be desired. Joe http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psce19c6b4.jpg |

I think that when you are on the road driving and enjoying what you accomplished so far, the reward from that is what some never feel. Remember, there is always the 2.0 2.5.3.0 and on, plus it will give you some behind the wheel evaluation on what you want to change and move up on, keep up the great work. I had a 71 Maverick back 30 years ago, fun and aggressive cars to work on. |

Your Maverick is looking great. It's nice to see it come to this point, I remember seeing your '69 Camaro driving light mod awhile ago and thought of doing it my mustang. Keep up the good work your inspiring me to getting back to my wreck.

That blue pops
Must have a ton of flake in it to look that shiny in Matte

I like this striping it goes well with the stripes on the side of the car.I also like the idea of it being on the dash.
I may have missed it but where did the mirrors come from? http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps68086148.jpg |

Thanks for the compliments pin my car. |
I got some parts painted today. Front spoiler, valance and the stone guard. PPG Envirobase (water) base coat and EC530 clear. These parts will get sanded down and I will flow coat them with ceramic clear for stone chip resistance being that they are so low on the front.

Chrysler Surf Blue. Was on the Challenger 1 year, but on many other models recently. |
Just realized how long it has been since I updated this thread. While I have been lagging behind here. I have been working on the car as well as other projects.
I started blocking the sides..... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psqyer5zim.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psmqlybeck.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psmvtdjib8.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pstxphncbx.jpg |
Then in early November I got this picture sent to me
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pssenvmxwi.jpg It may seem insignificant to you, but to me it was the most amazing picture I had ever seen. For 8 long years I had been looking for this car, you see back in 1986 my dad and I bought and built it as our first project. All the others before that were his, I was just his sidekick. I drove this car to my senior high school prom, seen here in 1987. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...sc30a8766.jpeg We sold the car in the early 90's, and I regretted it right away. But, marriage, work, kids and other hot rods all took precedent for a while. Then I decided it was time, but a copy wouldn't due, I wanted that very car if I could find it. I posted all over the web with ics and details of it hoping.... Then one day in November I get a call from a guy that had just bought it and was looking for history on it when he found my searches. Long story short, he sold me the car. coming off the truck after making its way home..... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pstfukqjgh.jpg and after a good bath. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps3tgvo0qk.jpg |
Now back to the Maverick......
I got a new trunk lid for it. This is a brand new product from Maverick Man that has an integrated and taller spoiler. I like how it fit in general, but the gaps were not quite up to snuff, so..... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psbcflp774.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psuvimfle3.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps1l16ehl5.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psdhxfnivu.jpg I didn't like the fitment of the end cap, so it got cut and reshaped.... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psjy2lfcbd.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psnfh4mkhj.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psgl2cab5x.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pslzxtqrau.jpg |
Now that brings us up to this past Saturday. I got the dash and all associated parts sanded and ready for paint.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psoq9w9s06.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psfgwigosy.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psmitpft0y.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psa5u2ael7.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps8c2ue7r8.jpg |
looking good!

On Sunday I sanded the top section of the dash, then mounted it back in the car. I then played out the stripes as I plan to, and extended the tape right across the cowl and onto the dash.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psalkhf3ba.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pssqya6voq.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps0lah6xb8.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps3qyij7qi.jpg With the lines in place, I went back to the booth and sprayed the stripe color..... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psccowccbf.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psoypb1nxl.jpg At this point I hung the Ididit steering column and the heater control face plate and sprayed them too.... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psz2strw9n.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psngtvi2ba.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pslz0zs3dc.jpg Then cleared the top of the dash too..... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps4yvr5yju.jpg A little photo bomb just for effect..... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pstewrgufe.jpg All these parts will now be sanded down and cleared again, but with a matte finish clear. |
Glad you're still working on the car, Glenn! Keep up the good work.
|
Man this looks good! I'm loving that blue. Nice detail carrying the stripe to the dash. Cant wait to see more!
|
Today I sanded all the parts down and after a ton of cleaning on them sprayed on the PPG D8113 matte finish clear. There is no sanding and buffing this clear otherwise the gloss comes back, so cleanliness is super important.
Here is the final product. I left them all in the booth and will grab it all tomorrow. Once home I will install the gauges in the bezel, all the associated switches in the lower panel and mount the dash pad. Can't wait to see it all together for the first time. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psnlok4gtx.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psfc4ph1wi.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psvvndmjbo.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psq3wuvie5.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pspnycttok.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psknqfyx7n.jpg |
Nice!
|
Brought the pieces home from the booth today and assembled them. New gauges and custom indicator panel all now installed in my home made steel gauge panel. In the lower dash panel I made i then installed the ignition switch with matching keys, wiper and headlight switch. I bolted on the black dash pad I have been saving for this project and then installed it all in the car.
I am so happy with the look and how it all came together. Its almost like I planned it that way!! Lol...... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psqbcjsrxz.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps7plwkcmv.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pszpd4m8yv.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psbqntpxo7.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psyqq6fxp2.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps6qcscnsn.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pswa5wx7br.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psuwi0xewq.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psl568shyw.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psz629oejl.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pseyqgjj3v.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psswxif3tv.jpg |

So many choices for harnesses I need to do some shopping and see what I want. |
Id say keep the posts coming. Refreshing to see a car many would pass by or not want. You are doing a fantastic job, love the paint and the details. Heck, I never though anyone would make carbon fiber parts for this car.
|
With the lower valance painted, I sanded it all down and prepped it for the stripe design I am going to do on the car.
Here is it on the car getting the tape just right..... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psbpivp6za.jpg sanded, taped and based the stripe color, which is only a few shades off of the body color. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pscoyrxriz.jpg Unmasked and cleared..... http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psgt8jpdxw.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psgtj8pivc.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psqzig98sg.jpg For extra durability I used a Ceramic clear when reclearing these parts for the last time. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psglzzjjzd.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psrgtfuqdx.jpg And final assembly, now just to put it aside until it is time to bolt it on the car for the final time. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psa1yfoxtw.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps6vzefxhd.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pshncj4i3w.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps6b1rjfcx.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psxmcysbhi.jpg |
Bottom of the hood in sealer, then base.....
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...pslmmx1qjm.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psxhifq1dh.jpg And with matte clear. This is the final look for the bottom of the hood. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psbrij000y.jpg With the bottom of the hood all masked, the topside got final sanded and ready for paint. Here the trunk lid and the top of the hood are in sealer, then base, then clear. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psgutkji6d.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psfvr0zlo5.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps4aa3xeeo.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psjissxxto.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psjdzw4s4j.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps9cq9ecqt.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psdn33zdxj.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psc8vmlhwv.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...psh2oqlrdv.jpg |
That really POPS!
I really like the stripe! |
Great work as always, Glenn. Your paint work is so smooth after spraying.
