Trying to educate myself but how would mids affect performance compared to long tubes?

ChuckDriver 12-21-2015 06:53 PM

Nice build!

So its been awhile since any updates and a lot has got done. My transmission showed up from American Powertrain and was able to get bolted up with engine. I also ordered the LS swap headers from Kooks and was hope full they worked with the DSE frame. I really wanted an 17/8" primary tube but couldn't bring myself to the $2200 DSE ones. I was really happy to find out they fit perfect!

Next up is building the exhaust and fitting rest of sheet metal for final gapping and then off to paint! Just wanted to throw a shot out to Billy at B&B Classics for all the great customer service and help with all my questions.

RPitts 03-10-2016 01:23 PM

So I decided to remove the ball flange and install 3" V band clamps. Also ordered a cross over pipe and cross member from B&B very nice pieces.

Here is a shot of the pass side showing header clearance

Very excited my third member showed up so now I can order my drive shaft and start exhaust. I went with 3.90 and the Wavetrac posi unit. Talking to a few guys running autocross the 3.73 was a bit tall in 2nd gear so hopefully this will be overall a good ratio.

I have always been told that long tubes make more power on normally aspirated motors then short or mid length. Now do I have the docs to back that up? Nope. Lol

Boy it's real easy to flip thru builds on this site and go "I can just cut and weld that just like they did" wrong! I have huge respect for the guys that do this everyday. So here are some updates I got the fuel tank plumbing and the II much fuel installed. I Was very excited about using the stock 3/8" fuel line to work with a little bending here and there.

Did you make that square bracket and cover yourself or was that a purchased piece?

67machrod 03-10-2016 05:53 PM

Oh! I also have a Brand New Holley 302-1 LS oil pan for sale if you are interested.

WSSix 03-10-2016 06:24 PM

Glad to see the headers fit well for you. Congrats on getting the car to being a roller.

Is that a Blazer or C/K I see sitting back there?

So it's been awhile since I've updated on here. I have got a ton of things getting checked off my list! First I was just going to patch the passenger side quarter panel then the more I looked at it I decided to change it out completely. Amazing how you do the second one twice as fast. The amd sheet metal is really a step up from the crap that was being produced by other companies. So as far as sheet metal all I have left is some gaping on quarter to trunk and trying to get the anvil carbon hood to line up the best I can. After I got the quarter done I moved onto raising up the trans tunnel to clear the T56 and bell housing. I used the tunnel kit from B&B very nice to start with btw. A lot of in and out and trimming before I could weld in place. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...pstfpt9tz5.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...pshngoxi4p.jpg
And yes I got all rust cleaned and epoxy primed and weld thru primed! I don't ever want to this again.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...ps3u1vqjoi.jpg
Ok so I thought that the quarters were a bitch..... Well let's just say the exhaust was close to 40hrs of burnt hands, flash burn,2 band saw blades,15 cut off wheels and more four letter words then you can imagine. But after all that I'm pleased with the way it came out.

I'm hoping I can heat up the hood on passenger side corner to get it down a bit otherwise it's getting some Ring Bros hood pins or cut in some aero latches.

Thanks! I have a special place for these trucks. I want to build a 2wd 67 but I need to get thru this project first.

That exhaust looks great ... knowing you did it yourself is worth more than all the kits out there! I haven't tackled a complete exhaust and don't know if I could build one as nice as that ... especially w/o TIG experience and a machine of course!

Looks great ... :trophy-1302:

I'm not sure on the DSE part number but I believe they are the 1" set back ones.

Thanks! I used the Stainless Works rod builder kit and a set of the Borla mufflers and Summit 3" v band clamps. Before I started welding it up I practiced a lot and still not a pro by any means!

Love the exhaust. I am going through my own pain and suffering at the moment to get mine to fit and this is great motivation. I have a few weld practice pieces already as well. This would be so much easier if we did it every day !!

I agree. I think just getting everything tacked and lots of small welds is best approach. This material can move around a lot. Also lots of small cuts and a ton of patience. If you don't have a band saw a recommend getting one I got a cheep harbor freight one and put a good lennox blade and worked perfect. Also for the extra $ put the v band clamps on I like having it come apart separate pieces. Now if I can just find a painter I will be set!
