Here is the test fit to the outer rocker, nice and tight!
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psa72kwps9.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psjetvfhdt.jpg |
As I posted before I decided not to replace the entire inner rocker, just to section out the rot
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psthychcvr.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0fzlv4b3.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psagoqiumg.jpg I used a 10ga fish plate over the joint just to renforce it http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...pszenqfnng.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psdgce9n8t.jpg |
Once I have the outer rocker ready to install I will shoot epoxy primer in side here and possibly some weather proofing under coating, this area never gets sealed off completely and looks to be sort of a drainage channel from the upper cowel
|
Nice job on that patch piece you made. Doubling up at the joint should work nice . Looking Good!
|
Well its been slow going, Not much spare time lately but i did get a few things done
Got the inner rocker buttoned up and shot with Epoxy primer http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...pshksrrxkw.jpg |
The rear inner quarter was rotted out and I got that installed. was happy the aftermarket piece fit very well
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...pswjpwfbz2.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psys8cindr.jpg I still have some weld clean up to do but I epoxy primed it in the meantime, I had mixed up a cup for the inner rocker and had a bunch left over so I didnt want it to go to waste. http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...pshfkee9is.jpg |
Next I was time to finish removal of the quarters, I braced up the weather strip channel once I was sure the trunk lid gaps looked good and everything was sitting where it was supposed to.
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psl2pvfnrd.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psq4z4whvr.jpg By this time it was already 95º and my garage faces the west.... And I decided to go ahead and get a new roof skin, I found more rust than i would like to see around the back window and with the quarter panels being spot welded under I figured i would just go for it, that and I will be able to clean and epoxy prime all the inner roof structure. so whats another $250 in sheet metal in the grand scheme of things!:gitrdun: |
It is so cool that this is your first car !
I am doing the same thing to my 66 Nova I bought in 1983 when I was 19 and it is all Detroit Speed. Looking forward to watching your build progress. |
Had a decent weekend, was able to get a few things going. I started off with removing the rest of the quarter panels, and removed the roof
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3mmpikya.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...pspnj96zgy.jpg I also had the trunk weather strip channel and hinges braced up so I went ahead and removed the package tray shelf http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...pserf6lpin.jpg |
I went ahead and did a bit of pre fitting with the quarter panels just to make sure I was on the the right course and there was nothing that need fixed before I sandblast the inside, and like I was afraid of I jumped the gun welding in the wheel houses..... I will have to repair them and re fit them, they were both rotated back a bit too much. I lined them up to the inner structure and the rocker but that wasn't good enough.
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...pshvb3id3k.jpg Aside from that snafu the quarters went in nicely http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psxxzeegqs.jpg |
From what I've seen this is a common fit issue, the corner needs split in order
to get it to sit right, but doesn't seem to be too much on an issue the other side was the same http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psbogokyya.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...pstc7jr1sy.jpg I used a silver sharpie to highlight the edges to help me see, Trunk gaps weren't terrible, seems to be par for the course from what I have seen, Tight at the top and bottom but a bit wide in the center http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psvwqoypwk.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8ztgljhr.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...pskav9bboc.jpg One thing I discovered is I don't own enough clamps!! But #10 tek screws work in a pinch! the only thing left to do was get the trunk floor extensions fitted.after that I pulled everything back apart not its a lot of welding and grinding of drilled spot welds and some little rust repairs before I sandblast and prime. |
It looks good, your making some nice progress. Thats a big project and it's looking great.
|
Maybe its the angle of the photos but the body line looks off from the fender to rear tail light panel?
|
I was able to pill those lines together in the end, I just needed an extra set of hands to clamp while I held. I needed to pull up and push over at the same time and needed both hands. for the most part that is resting on the rear panel.
There is also a few areas on the lower part of the quarter panel that need worked in just a bit, some of the bends have just too wide of a radius and is holding the gap open. |
I had some time to work on the Camaro again this weekend, Did alot of work but not much to show for it... Back into the "Sandblast booth". I think Im done with sandblasting in my driveway. such a pain....
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psvhtdgob1.jpg about 6hrs later and all i have to show for it is the inner structure is all clean and ready for epoxy primer. http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psor3n4unq.jpg I only get about 30min of blasting to 1hr of clean up.... not only that the wind picked up and almost lost my booth... |
After cleaning I spent most of the weekend filling areas where there was clusters of spot welds that were drilled out. and I got some paint stripper to clean the inner door frames and trunk lid, but after further examining of the trunk lid, I found some major rust in the inside, and it looks like it wouldn't be long before it comes through to the top side. so yet another part to buy.
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psxwstg4oy.jpg Then my buddy brought over a pair of 1949 panhead cylinder heads that someone had attempted to weld new exhaust spouts on, I did the best I could without starting from scratch and cutting off the brand new one. I expected the casting to be full of garbage but was surprisingly clean, the old welds however.... http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psumaxodpp.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...ps848fxnqr.jpg |
I did manage to fit the shelf panel brackets, I fitted the rear shelf to the old brackets, the clecoed it to the braces and to the hinges, then removed the brackets and fitted the new ones, notching them to the mini tubs and clecoing them into position, before pulling everything apart ,again, and preparing everything for epoxy primer.
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psimlsymys.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psyxlvucjo.jpg So with many hours in this weekend, you look in my garage and it looks like I did nothing..... But I should have all this Shot in primer and ready for final install this weekend, I hope Supposed to get to 100º this week, so not sure what I will get done after work. |
Building cars is so much fun!!
Keep plugging away at it - it's a hobby... |
I do have a few questions about body filler and seam sealers
1: what should I be using for body filler, and is it ok to apply filler on top of the epoxy primer? 2: Seam sealer inside, Same question basically. 3: exterior seam sealer, Same |
Quote:
When you say "exterior" - what do you mean by that? You talking about the underbody areas? |
the exterior, I'm talking about the seam between the rear quarter and back tail light panel, and between the deck filler panel and quarter. the areas that will be painted over on the out side of the car
|
I did manage to find this product in another build posthttp://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0kk4hkj5.jpg
And here is an example of what i meant by outside seam sealing http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psyaooqbv5.jpg obviously something that can be painted over, whereas the under car seam sealer I would suppose needs to be more rugged |
as for my build I didn't get much done, just some rust repair
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psuyryqcmm.jpg Up in the inner sail panel there was one small rust spot. looks like condensation build up over the years I suppose. http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...pskjsyzz50.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psmgajdepk.jpg |
Took a little hammering to get the shape right but in the end it fit pretty well
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psfvrieuho.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psidun0idq.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psffammcev.jpg |
Next I began to work on the area where the quarter panel attaches on the side of the rear window, I made some tabs to locate where the original edge sat, to make sure I followed the same line, there is a slight curve here
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...pskskjjztj.jpg http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psvi3viwlm.jpg |
I didn't get much further than this,
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psjnxymt86.jpg I got it welded and test fit the quarter, I have a high spot so it needs adjustment Here is the only other pic I have of this at the moment, But basically it was a piece of 18ga that I had made into 5/8"x5/8" angle then I trimmed off one leg just past the bend, It would have been much easier to just replace the one 5/8" leg and not cut down the side but there was some rot that creeped down and I wanted to make sure I got it all. http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/...psmz1oioei.jpg The yard was a disaster so the rest of my weekend was spent being a landscaper.. |
