Rear end, floater and brakes all set for mock up. Set the rear end up for 1/2" of a spacer to bring the rear tires out to the same width as the front. I know that it would be better to have the option to adjust the front with spacers as well but this would necessitate flaring the front fenders out so far that I think they would look goofy. If I had a redo, I might tighten up the wheel/brake clearances, I think there is 3/8" of extra clearance in my setup. If you wanted to build in some adjustment in the front, it's possible!!
All of the Baer Floater components look awesome. Went together perfectly. |

Kind of feels like a milestone putting it on the ground, standing on it's own.

Been a little low on the production this month, don't you hate it when silly things like work and staining the fence get in the way the important stuff!! Working on the front flares and ordered a set of rear fender skins so I can get started on the rears.

Looking good... and familiar.
I am still picking out black boogers from my flare process. :disgusted: |
Beautiful build indeed,, and the metal work is awesome. Shared you desire for the 315 and made my mods in Carbon.

First flare metal work at 95%, a touch more hammer/dolly/shrink work to be done...might enlist some help from a sheet metal voodoo expert to get me closer here but right now 1/16" of filler would get me smoooooth! I think an expert could get me closer. Truth be told, I was impatient more than once while welding this up, and put to much heat into a couple areas. Totally fixable, just angry that I added work to my plate.

Beautiful work!!

Been a challenging couple of months, progress has been slow but have finally put the front fender flares almost to rest. Can't finish until I complete the rocker panels mod's. Soon. Attachment 60758
Had a couple minor issues with the rear-end, one was Currie's and one was mine (rushed the drawing and made a mistake). Currie did a fantastic job handling theirs and took care of mine at no charge. Rear-end is back in the car and all is well! Thanks Jon and Tony at Currie!! Spent the better of a day with plumb bobs ,string and a tape measure and squared everything up. I had already squared the subframe but after careful measuring the rear-end only took a 1/16" adjustment to the panhard bar to get perfect. Wasn't expecting that to go so easy!! Started the rear fender flares. Picked up a set of skins from Classic Industries, and have started the process of moving the outer tubes out 1 5/8", leaving 3/8" clearance to the rear tire....is that enough?? More pics to come very soon. |
Just recently moved to Boise. Happy to see a build like this going on here...cant wait to get to work on my project.... Great Work!!

I wish I could quit saying that life is getting the way of shop time...but Boise just had the worst snow storm in over 30 years. I spent the weekend shoveling snow and worrying about the trusses over my shop that had 33" of snow accumulated. Northwest transplanted California dude still hasn't completely sync'd with snow!! I know there are many here who will laugh at that little bit of snow but it was a big deal here. The evenings required the Jacuzzi and many cocktails!
I'm making some progress with the rear fender flares though, the first side has been mocked up and some tacking has begun. Attached are some pics of my process...I ended up only cutting the new skins at the body line seams and then laid the inner fender lip up against the tire with a paint stick as a buffer. Once it's all tacked in place, I should be able to thin the fender lip by 3/8" plus the paint stick should give 1/2" of clearance to the tire. Allowed the fender to decide how wide the back of the car would end up, looks like it will end up about 1" wider at the tail lights. Attached a few pics of all the clamps (reversed to be spreaders) that I used to push the existing fender lip out to be flush with the new skin. The threaded rods are doing the same with a thin piece of wood inside the fender and some nuts to push it out flat but still keep the curve to the fender. The body seam behind the tire appears to be lining up almost exactly straight in line with the door/front fender but the section between the tire and the door will have to be completely rebuilt. Shouldn't be an issue. Kind of embarrassed by all the wood and threaded rod chaos but it was the only way to do it while by myself in the shop. More to come...... |
Just went through you build again and enjoyed it as much as the first time. That's some real nice fab work John. I love a second gen flared out like this. I finally remebered to subscribe so I don't miss anything !

Pretty excited to finally see my thoughts on paper!! Ben Hermance is fantastic; he took my thoughts and molded them into what works. I appreciated our interactions, his ability to take my words/sketches and put to paper all with a keen eye, I think has resulted in good looks and functionality all of which is buildable from my shop. Not sure on exact color yet, that's a decision for later this year but having the body mods solidified was a great step forward.

First rear flare is getting closer.
|
Fantastic Renderings!! Yeah Ben does good work and he's good people. The car is looking epic!!! Going to be a lot of fun!!
|
Love the renderings! The 3rd gen GTA style spoiler flows nicely. Good luck!
I vote purple for the color. |
That's Looking Good!

Love the rear spoiler idea....sick!!:trophy-1302:

Is there any reason you chose to stretch the car rather than just enlarge the flares other than for personal taste and preference?
When you stretch the car as you've done the donor section you added from the quarter skin is cut to be longer than the actual cutout in the quarter panel in the car so it bubbles. Is that right? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Aren't you going to have to make a wider bumper cover, modify tail light panel, etc?
Can you address putting the quarter skin in? Is the section you add into the quarter longer than the section you cut out in order to make it stretch and bow a little? I read somewhere this is how it's done. I want to ask someone who actually did it. When you say "pie cuts" in the fender do you mean little spots cut to take the place of stretching? Driver side rear flare underway. Should be done tomorrow. If anyone ever uses this method to flare a sec gen, the key to the upper line flowing properly is bracing the joint from the backside. Kind of boring pics to put here but if anyone wants detailed pics, PM me and I will send them to you. Worked pretty well. One pic included here, you can't see the nut behind the square tube with the washers but it pushes the tube which pushes the existing and the new fender into a nice flowing line.
|
So subtle yet so much detail, well done!!
|
x2 I'm anxious to see how this turns out. Keep up the great work. Love seeing the detailed pictures of the changes.
|
Wow, very impressive work and I love the wide body style!
|
Nice work. I love these fab threads.

Killer build, man. Back in the 70's everyone was flaring the second gens, and for good reason - they just look insane.
|
Very nicely done...flows nicely with the original lines. Just wondering how you will do the tail panel? Will you push the tail lights out by the amount the rear was widened?
MY 67 Nova needs quarter panels I wish I had the skills and guts to try something like this. Awesome job...hanging on for updates. |
Looking good man.
We should get the cars together when they're done, so people can tell us they had one just like it :) It's really worth doing. I almost wish I had not brought the back in. The tail is just .5" wider on both sides. Hard to see. |
