So this car was an all original paint car. The plan was to to just leave it as is. Although not a pretty patina... That was the plan. Well... My buddy Jim, aka Painter, said... Come on... Let's just do a quick scuff and shoot. Make it look a little nicer. So James ended up scuffing the whole car with 220. Joey, little bro, even got in the mix working on the hood for us. We took it to Jim's and the plan was to toss a few coats of filler primer on it, quick block and be done. We'll... That escalated quickly. Turns out the paint was dead and was flaking off. So Jim stripped the entire car. We knew we had a couple rust spots that needed to be addressed. Aside from that though that car was extremely clean. When we gutted the inside we found a Lowenbrau beer cap under the drivers seat. This car had been sitting since 1983. Wonder how long that had been there? James was going to throw it away. I plan on cleaning it up and leaving it in the glove box. Keep that memory alive. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6bb72a2266.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...4278a1ddcd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8e2551b041.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1fd7b684b8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...67e7cb9d51.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...53ff34d77d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ba84ec4395.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2aee60c874.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9e10fc68ad.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...27d7c8b0fd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0e372724d0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d24dba9b61.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d8dcc696ec.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ccd36ed117.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6fdbc4422b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...4dbbfa29a0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6d58b9fac3.jpg

Color time!! James wasn't feeling the original butternut yellow. I told him any color as long as it was an original 68 color. So it was going LeMans Blue. Then literally a week before it was going to get sprayed he saw this color. He wanted it to stand out from the rest... So here we are. Very pleased with the color choice. Jim mocked up the front end because we were going to go with a bumble bee stripe, but then opted not to. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...306dd71f74.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0a43197d76.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...10c6afd19e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3efe5c1f92.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...28a1587ead.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...177ef2bd13.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f07e24d4da.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...61894eb169.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6fda9acdcc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cab10f3da9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b7d44985d4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...230d317173.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ab3006d265.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6d48434ca7.jpg

I love butternut but that's a great looking blue. Great choice!

Ricochet 09-27-2020 10:36 AM

The day James saw it for the first time. It was the best feeling just sitting back and watching him take it in...

Made our own washers for the trunk and strikers. Used stringer washers from a boat and counter sunk stainless bolts and polished them for the trunk and .polished the original strikers and used a stringer washer. Total investment less than $10.

So here is where we are today. Most of the trim is done. Ordered up all new smoked glass all the way around. Unfortunately the rear glass is defective which is why the trim is not on. Have a replacement, just haven't put it in yet. Currently in n the process of wiring the entire car. Hopefully be wrapped up today or tomorrow. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...013ea38af9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f281bb0ac4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5684eab802.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...80ea3bab0e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e49406788d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9c2d0d462a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...834689ee46.jpg

Jeff-

Thanks Jeff! Much appreciated. The plan was just a simple resto mod with a few minor upgrades, but nothing to take away from the stock look. Which is why we also just did Rallys, but 17".

Is the tri-five back in que now that this interrupted it?

Ricochet 09-28-2020 08:12 PM

Jim is back on the 55. As of now bodywork is 100% done from the firewall back as well as the hood. Changing the mounts for the fenders at the core support, then wrap up the bodywork on those. Then blow it apart and button up the underside.

Hey Brent,

What a great build and amazing experience. I see you guys are using a Sniper EFI system. If I can be of service with the tuning, please let me know. I would also enjoy giving your boys an EFI 101 lesson as I was going through the process.

Let me know if I can help with that. The Sniper systems can be sensitive if not wired properly.

The best part of this build is the father/son time! I'm looking forward to twisting some wrenches with Hugh. Ya know, just to show him the old man still has it and probably to get him off some damn device!

Absolutely!! Building this with my son has been the best bonding ever. I'm just blessed he gets it and wants to do it. Funny you mention the old man still has it... He asks that all of the time.. How do you know that... Etc.. Etc... I just smile... I joke and tell him.. Ya know.. I was kind of a big deal ya know... [emoji1787][emoji1787] Of course he laughs and rolls his eyes..... [emoji849]

Well.... Sunday was a HUGE milestone. We all jumped in the Camaro for its official first drive. I can honestly say everything went perfect. Put around 50-60 miles on it. Nothing crazy... But it did everything we wanted it to without any hiccups. James and I embarked on this project Oct 19, 2018. Almost 2 years to the date it is finally done. Been an amazing journey working hand and hand with him. Something we will both reflect back on for the rest of our lives. Aside from the paint, which my good friend Jim Ramirez handled, we did everything in our garage. Not a single nut or bolt left untouched! I included a few before pics to see how far it came. Looking back at these pics the transformation not only of the car is amazing, but also those of James DuPont. He is a young man with a huge future ahead and we couldn't me more proud.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...155541a271.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3ee2f7f2db.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...57ee9c9cc9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cd6127305f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...260fc4e740.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0c3e1de05e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9ae74b2469.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...df77655557.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...416d18b53f.jpg

Well... Been putting some miles on it. Have about 600 miles on it so far. Shaking it out. Had problems with the Holley Sniper unit. We started noticing issues the hotter it got. Andrew B was helping put a tune it and thought the ECM was giving us issues. Spoke with Holley Tech. Went through some trouble shooting with them and determined it was the ECM. Even though it was out of warranty they didn't blink an eye and took care of it. They sent us a brand new unit. MAJOR props to Holley for their support!! James swapped it out by himself. I double checked everything and looked great. This thing has NEVER ran so good, all across the board. I almost don't want to mess with it, but we're going have Andrew work his magic and
put a better tune it. The other thing that given us a little issue was a caliper that was hanging up. Wilwood makes a 2 Piston Caliper that bolts in the stock location. D52. Simple swap and really slick. Once we dug into found the rotors were on the ragged edge so we swapped those out as well. $550 for all new Calipers, Powerstop rotors, bearings and seals. Much stronger pedal. I never did before and after testing but HUGE difference in stopping!! James has been getting some time under his belt driving it around a bit. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...19a98bcc39.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e617c207f6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cb58f50031.jpg
