You are so right Ron. The first transmission gears were for autocross and being able to drive on the street. The first 3 gears were used on the faster autocrosses. Now, with a taller 2nd gear and 3rd gear, I will never see 3rd gear on an autocross. I have done a few more road courses and I want to do more. The spread from 3rd to 4th was too much. I will be shifting a lot between 1st and 2nd gear on some autocrosses. If the course has some super slow u turns, I may have to dump it into 1st gear to come off the corner and then go back to 2nd if it opens up. The beauty of this transmission is the ease of up and down shifting without the clutch.

As far as freeway driving, I can go up to 80 mph and keep it at 3500 rpm. I usualy cruise at 65 and that is 2900 rpm. No too bad. My rear tires are 28" tall.

I'm 2.87/1.81/1.31/1, on the road course all I use is 3rd and 4th anyway, and I do like that spread. I think you'll be happy with the 1.30 third. My problem is autoxing, first is too low, and second is too high for my cams power band. The change will probably kick the crap out of my drag race times though.

Still can't beleive nobody has come out with a reasonably priced five speed, with some normal ratios, that will hold up. I'm sure you experienced the same thing Vinny and I did on the cruises with no O/D. Everyone else is cruising 80mph, my car really had its tongue hanging out taching 4K, Vin and I fell way at the back to the back of that pack.

If you think about it, it truely is harder then you think to build a car that can do everything well. There really has to be alot of compromise, it seems if it is a good 1/4 mile car, it won't autox, etc. etc. Its been fun, and expensive trying to figure it out. Good luck. Ron

I'll second this as well. I've been in the planning phases of my project off and on for some time, and those compromises have been the bane of my existence LOL! When I started accounting for where the money was going, I found it was the stuff trying to make the thing streetable that REALLY sucked up the money. Without having the "paint and body" skillset... So, I've kicked that part of the project out, for the most part. First priority's to make it safe and crashworthy, second is making it fast at this point. But ALWAYS in the back of my head is that "now if I can just...".

Yeah that's the truth, not to mention trying to make it a race car and a street car these parts are always the ones adding weight too !

What do you guys have against using a Tremec TKO 5 speed ?
Are you sold on the jerico/t-101/g-force due to no clutch shifting ie dog gears ? And you can't afford the 5 spd version of the same ?

And the T56 is too heavy ?

I finally gave in and went with a T56 myself at a 30 lb weight penalty, although I also had good luck with a TKO.

The Tremec is a good transission for the street, but not for racing, IMO. The gear ratios are not ideal and the shifting is not even close to as fast. Once you race with a Jerico or GForce, you will never go back. They are noisy for the street, but my car is not a daily driver. The 5 speed starts at $5300+ with shifter. I got my GForce for under $3500 commplete. Like I said before, I should have paid the extra and got the 5 speed in the beginning. It was one of those things when doing the build, everything was adding up really fast.

The stock TKO is a horrible trans for quick shifting, high rpm shift, and as Brian said, has terrible gear spreads... do some searches.. it will become obvious quickly.

The Magnum T56 seems to be performing well in many applications in this niche.

Vegas69 03-19-2012 02:51 PM

Yep, I have a TKO for sale.:D It's to bad G Force or Jerico don't make something a little more docile with a real overdrive. I think it could be a huge seller. I really don't want the weight of the t56 and 6 gears isn't neccessary.

57hemicuda 03-19-2012 05:33 PM

My car started with a Muncie which I loved the gear spread, broke it on the first outing, then it got a TKO600 which I didn't like the gear spread, and under extreme duress didn't like hitting third gear. I love racing the t101a, but don't like everytime I take someone for an easy cruise and they think its broken LOL

I know this is a little late but I had to chime in My experience with unlimited fiberglass products. I purchased an L-88 hood from them for My Chevelle and the only thing that was unlimited was the amount of problems with both the product and the customer service. I can't say enough bad things about that company. It was certainly not the cheapest option. When I received the hood the fitment was so bad you could put your fist between the hood and the fender on the driver side. The edges were unfinished and separating. The gelcoat looked like it had been dragged across the factory floor, the underside was unfinished. When I called to express My concerns I was told I could pay to ship it back ($100) and they would evaluate it. If the thought is met their standards I would have to pay to ship it back. If they agreed it was defective they would send me another (me still paying for shipping) in 6-12 weeks. So either way I was out another $200 and maybe three months. I ended up spending a bunch of time trying to fix it. That whole experience was 10 years ago and was disappointing I still have the motivation to type all this and dissuade some one from shopping with them.

Steer clear.

Brian, your car still kicks ass and I wanna see it up here in July for Tour.

I got the transmision back from Competition Transmissions and Gears in North Carolina this week. I changed the gearing to a better setup for the road courses. I ended up with 2.24, 1.73, 1.30, 1.0 gears. My Dad and I just finished installing it and my Daughter and I took it for a spin to make sure all it good...and it is!

I will be driving Blu Balz in Las Vegas next week and then back to my Camaro for a few local events and the Goodguys in June at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds.

Sieg 04-07-2012 04:36 PM

Good to hear! Look forward to hearing how BB does in Vegas.

Flash68 04-07-2012 04:55 PM

sounds like a great choice of new ratios... what rear end gear you running?

Cris@JCG 04-07-2012 05:44 PM

Does this mean I finally get to drive her? See you next weekend!

I have 3.70 rear ratio. We will see how it is. I may go to a 3.89 if 2nd gear is a bit too tall. I like to run 2nd gear on most autocross courses. 1st gear will be good for the peanut Goodguys courses or slow portions of other autocross courses. The beauty of this transmission is that it is so easy to shift up and down (no clutch).

The glass is just mounted with a rubber molding around it. I did not use the factory trim.

MikeC40 04-25-2012 07:15 PM

That's why I did not go that route. It is just generic window moulding just about any installed would have.

You gonna do the AAS thing at Buttonwillow at the end of next month? I was watching the videos of that, and it looked fun! If not I'll probably be at Good Guys at Pleasanton. I'm going to the National Tour this weekend and there's only one other camaro:willy:

I don't mind going to school on those two!

Plus I'd love Mike to drive the Mutt and see what he thinks!

I would love to go there with you guiys in September, but Mike and I plan on just coming home from beautiful Nebraska at that time. Too bad the dates don't work for us.

I am going to a private event at Thunderhill in June. That is a fun track we should meet at one day. I guess ASCS is not happening this year?

I am definitely going to Buttonwillow one of these days. Great track.

Ditto on that! That was like the expanded cliff notes on the build, a great read. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, but the parts are so darn interesting!

I saw that. I thought that was kind of funny and cool to see. The show was a great 30 spot for DSE. The Tuckers are great people and and it nice to see success for them. Their phones should be off the hook after that show.
