If Payton is going to post on projects from 3 years ago, so am I. Finished the welding on the chassis tonight, can you say congested. Trophy truck comes to mind, turned out really good, thank God for chromoly or this thing would be 4000 pounds

Clearly, your skills are awesome, Ron. Your car-centric dietary choices, however, leave a bit to be desired, especially if you're after a slim derriere. Let's consider the rear impact of that Dana bus supporter you've indicated plans for in this thing. I think there's room for some aluminum IRS in this peach of American ingenuity. You have the time.
Kudos on the backbone tranny tunnel--I've got one kinda like that, but less artistically inclined (and lighter). Your output is a model for us all!:weld: Edit: That steering column clamp is tight! Quote:

Love AMC'S The mix of years for bodywork is brilliant. Would love to buy when you finish but the amount of zeros might scare me.

Many ways to achieve 50/50 weight distribution in an Americam Motors product...

been following this thread for years and love it! so happy it's still moving forward.
I know it's too late and apologies if it's been brought up before but... *cough* mid-engine *cough* |
NO more major changes, engine has been moved back a foot, we'll just call it midengined. Started doing tin work to fill in the little windows.....ugg its going to take forever.

3 more today, I'll be done in no time. Ha!!!!!

Tape? Is this car going to wear makeup instead of paint? Tack it and hit it with a hammer. Next panel . . .
Let's see the engine placement, when you get a chance. Rear weight bias may be a thing here--good for your 335s. And (don't ever begin a sentence with "and") by the way, thank you for helping the world to understand the meaning of front-mid-engine one crazy car at a time. On a serious (not my bag) note, the chromeoly tubing is amazing. You're close to bicycle frame wall thickness there, so your inner structure (and roof-high weight) should be pretty awesomely light. My steel bikes are lighter than the aluminum/carbon one, but the aluminum one does have six inches of suspension travel . . . |
Messing with silicone bronze to attach my little windows, never used it before, so we will see. "AND", if you are going to bust my balls for grammar, you may want subscribe over at Corner Carvers instead of hear. That's how they roll over there, more of a book club!!
|
I'm curious how the silicon bronze works out for you, I'm told it is perfect for stuff like that. I bought some but I haven't had a chance to use it yet.

I thought I was going to tig it, because I had never heard of silicone bronze mig wire. I You Tubed silicone bronze because I have never used it before, apparently in Europe migging bronze is a very common method for installing body panels. Everything I saw on You Tube was from Britain, and none of my weld suppliers had ever heard of bronze mig wire. I did get some off of Amazon, and will try it. I will be surprised if it works the way I want, but here's hoping.

It makes welding tin to tube pretty easy. you will need to run a long 3/4 stitch about 1.5 to 2" apart. i am not sure how the Mig will work but we use it a bit with the tig.
|
Autobody shops are all buying dedicated silicon bronze mig welders for fixing the newer cars, but I have yet to see one in action.
|
I heard all you have to do is run straight Arogon, but I will let you know when I try it. Wire showed up today

I got a roll of 023. and a roll of .030, I know when you try to run aluminum wire though a mig machine it sucks, unless you have a push pull machine or a spool gun. I'm hoping the bronze pushes OK, I'll let you know as soon as I try it. Have a couple more days of tinning to do before I make sparks. Wire came from Amazon

Thanks Don, I still fear I'm going to be tigging all that crap, but we will see. Did get the other side done today

The exhaust is exhausting, 10 pounds of the crap in a 5 pound bag
https://photos.smugmug.com/Cars/AMX/...6_125201-L.jpg |
Looking awesome Ron !! Just stellar!!
Fire up the TIG !! LOL |
Awesome packaging! The good thing is this: If the bag weighs five pounds, it should easily support ten pounds of stuff!
|
|
Nice Work Ron !
|
Its all this little stuff that takes all the time, exhaust hangers when real estate is at such a premium.

ahh, but it looks so damn good!
Nice work! |

Love when I get to repurpose old parts on to new projects. Found this steering stabilizer bracket off an old 66 Bronco I used to have. Love the fact that the bracket still has Duff's stamped on it (of James Duff Bronco Parts), used it for the start of my muffler hangers. The bad part about an underslung frame is you have no place to hang anything.

I remember Duff's! My dad and I had some of their stuff on our '69 Bronco when I was a teenager.
|
Had a little primer that stuck as always, tedious picking that crap off, but quarter molds are pulled. Should have parts next week. Excited about the zero quarter panel body work, because the molds look so good.

Amazing work! Thank you for taking time to share all your efforts. The inspiration your project provides is much appreciated.
|
Those came out nice Ron!!
|
They will look nice once cleaned and buffed. Thanks for jump starting the project Greg

Trying to get exhaust buttoned up before the body work starts. Had to run one side of exhaust high to give myself watts link accessibility. Still have to figure what I'm going to do out the back of the tail pan.
The real issue though is where am I going to cram a rear sway bar. Real estate is at such a premium, I fear its going to end up inside the car. https://photos.smugmug.com/Cars/AMX/...0_171148-L.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Cars/AMX/...0_170710-L.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Cars/AMX/...0_153247-L.jpg |
This is definitely the most sophisticated exhaust I've done. Even more then then building my own mufflers on the Mustang, although it will look pretty Ho-Hum from outside the car. Finally will start on the firewall this weekend.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Cars/AMX/...3_164034-L.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Cars/AMX/...3_164028-L.jpg |
I know it doesn't seem like much, but the last of the exhaust hangers are made, and the exhaust is totally buttoned up. I need to get motivated on to the firewall..........STAY FOCUSED......FOCUSED
https://photos.smugmug.com/Cars/AMX/...9_171107-L.jpg |
That car is gonna be absolutely insane, when done. Keep at it, Ron.
|
Sway bar through the lower frame rails then end links up to axle housing?
