Just started data analysis from dyno testing today - needless to say, we somewhat exceeded targets.....
Will have complete breakdown of data within a couple of days, but here is a comparison of power from Mayhem to Hellfire. In sticking with Mark's theme of 'more power + less mass' it is certainly directionally correct. Some statics of Hellfire engine: Average TQ from 2100-6800 RPM = 871 #/FT Average HP from 2100-6800 RPM = 726 HP Peak TQ: 950 Peak HP: 931 For fair comparison, compared to Mayhem over same range (3900-6800 RPM): Mayhem Hellfire AVG TQ 765 847 AVG HP 772 852 More to come - much data to process..... Dave |
I guess if your into that sort of thing....
That torque curve looks delicious. Did I just say that out loud? |

For those of you who don't know Dave Mikels he is the brains behind my power and success for over 24 years. He did the engine in our FSAE car back in 1990 and 1991. I did the chassis and Dave did the engine. Huh same as now. Dave is also a great driver so we have been a good team for a few years. We were roommates at Rolla, MO The years I did well at OUSCI it was Dave in my window telling where to pick up time in the Auto-X. Not my best event but I can do when I need to with a good spotter. So we are at again. I think Dave will get it all sorted out! Looks good so far. I'm going to need more chassis to put all this power down. Mark |

No - 4 bolt heads - LS7 block / CNC LS9 heads (I think we are near or at the limit for 4-bolt) |

Care to elaborate on what you mean by needing "more chassis"? |

Wow! Very nice.
HellCat vs. HellFire... If only... |
Push on the "go pedal" and you'll look like this!

Gotta love that torque curve. I can see why you are saying you need to get the chassis sorted out. You should be able to put power down anywhere that you can maintain traction. Will make the AutoX and Speed/Stop more interesting.
Time frame on when you'll be able to start your tuning? Rod |
I made a lot of progress over the weekend. I got all the parts back to assemble the rear axle. It has a C&R Racing Remmed gears that was run in at C&R axle dyno to make sure the frictional loses are good and it is quite. The housing is a steel Strange Engineer part so I could install the diff cooler. All the Detroit Speed brackets are welded on it. The axle ends are my design that uses the SKF bearing, production C-6 park brake and all C-6 Corvette mounting interfaces. The axle ends are dry due to a GM axle seal in the end of the axle tube in the tube end. The axle shafts are 300 M material that are gun drilled to save a little mass. I was also able to design a park brake cable that interfaces to a '69 Camaro so you can use the stock '69 Camaro park brake system.

I also hammed out all the brake lines for the ABS system over the last week. Just for referance these brake lines took me a full week to make and I've done this twice before. 40 feet of brake lines. But doing it with out the front clip is a huge time saver.

From the looks of the 4 gear truetrac, you must be using 31 splines at the diff end of the axle. Even then, it looks like the axle shafts are necked down below the minor diameter of the splines.
Majority opinion says that with the power your motor makes, that you would need 35 spline axles. Does the lack of bending load from the "floater" setup, make that much difference? I guess if you never plan to run a drag slick, the tire is the breaking point. Just wondering why 31 spline, what is the reasoning behind that choice? Does the corvette bearing limit it? Is 300M worth that much? I just went through this with my car (simlar power) and ended up with 35 spline axles and truetrac. |
Looking good Mark.
89 days till OUSCI........pedal down! |
Better than PERFECT Mark.
Hope you're not planning on selling this to Charley.... he doesn't like things "improved". LOL |
Great progress Mark! Can't wait to see it on the track!!

I am amazed every time I look at this thread (and all Mark's threads).
All the info that is freely given. The time spent posting pics and answering questions, showing refinements, tech secrets, part numbers, vendors, every detail it takes to build one of these masterpieces. Pretty darn cool. Jeff- |
Mark that motor is amazing. It makes more horse power than my car with both the original and new motor combined!

Killer line work! Line and electrical some of my favorite details to look at on a project. They say so much about your focus and attention to detail on a project.
I really want to run ABS on the PT-57. I wish you had a "how to" article somewhere on the interwebs for those of us who wish to follow in your footsteps. -Russell |
Beautiful line work. As previously said, great attention to detail. Is the distribution block on the front cross member possible due to the set back of the engine in the car this time or is this the same as Mayhem? Regardless it is both fun and educational to watch you piece together your cars. I really do appreciate the amount of work you do to support this thread while building the car, working full time (at a job that all of us wish we had the knowledge and skill to do), and having a life for you and your new wife.
Thank you, Rod |

Fuel Tanks
Ricks made me a very nice tank with twin Camaro ZL-1 pumps.

Clutch
I went with a Centerforce Clutch and D &D Performance in Wixon Mi installed a oil pump in my trans. They are offering this now. It is the same pump as the TR6060 in a Magnum box. I will use it to pump my trans fluid to the rad to cool the fluid then that fluid will go to the diff.
http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/q...psa2695a3c.jpg This a GT500 throw out bearing with a quick connect. The GT500 CSC has more travel and a smaller effective piston area so it will stroke farther. http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/q...pscc7020ff.jpg Diff cooler http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps08cb0738.jpg I installed the engine, trans, rear axle, drive shaft and fuel tank last weekend. Also you can see the Bosch ABS controller in this shot in front of the engine. Late change to go to Bosch to work with the Carbon Ceramic Brakes http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/q...psc4aadc81.jpg |

Progress!

Hey Mark,
Can you clear some room in your PM box. Mark |
In the picture of the front of the trans is the fluid pump in the bottom left?

I hope to someday have a project and shop that are so clean I can work in shorts and sandals...well... I still work in shorts and sandals, but my feet are really dirty!
Thanks for the thread Mark, it's inspiring watching this build. Above my budget, but I love the engineering that goes along with the parts. The differential cooler, Z06 rear axle bearings...great stuff! |
Wow
OUTSTANDING work Mr Stielow .
:king: |
Like always, your builds are amazing. Your garage is awesome too. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
