Some of the days it was too hot in the garage to work I spent in the cellar smoothing some of the Accessory drive brackets. Here's a few of them partially done.

very nice!!!!

Sonar Chief 09-02-2015 09:34 AM

That looks very nice! What finish are you gonna use? Will that be too shiny for a paint to stick to properly? Just asking cuz I might detail a couple parts and then paint em .... maybe?

Michael

waynieZ 09-02-2015 10:03 AM

Thanks

Thanks guys. Looking at Al Moreno's boys build has spoiled me., I can't imagine how long it took to get them as nice as they did.
Michael, That is done with 120,240 then 320 and then red Scotch brite. The 120 makes it kind of rough. I'm not sure about paint sticking yet, I will adjust as necessary. A painter I know said they make something to help bond the paint to aluminum. I forget the name. All I can think of is gorilla or bull dog ???? They were terrible from GM. If I figure out the name I'll post it.
Forgot to mention in some places it was so rough I used a file made to file points.

syborg tt 09-02-2015 10:29 AM

Wayne that looks great and I know what you mean about the Moreno brothers. I have been watching the G5R build on Camaro5 for a few years and that car is going to be insane.

Wayne if you are using spray can to paint I have used Bulldog Adhesion Promoter with good success on metal and plastic.
I think I ordered through Eastwood. Parts look nice also. Nice work.

Jay Hilliard 09-02-2015 03:33 PM

Nice job Wayne. Looking forward to seeing more pics.

Thanks Guys
I wasn't sure of the name I guess I've been seeing to many Gorilla tape commercials.

I have been watching the G5R build on Camaro5 .. Me too Marty amazing stuff they're doing.

Here is one of the belt tensioners.

I'll post some of the Alt/PS bracket when I can get to it.

Now this is a Beautiful piece from G.5, Al Moreno's crew.

Spent the day out in the garage today. Swapped out the AutoKraft oil pan and dip stick, then I washed down the motor and sprayed it with Eastwood's 2K High temp ceramic gloss clear. I'm no painter by any stretch of the word but I'll tell you it came out nice! The nozzle was great, nice fan pattern and it worked great. I also cleared my Street & Performance LS swap adapters. They look great.

Tomorrow I plan on rotating the engine right side up.( This thing seems so heavy on this engine stand.)
Then we will change the supercharger lid to the ZL1, and put the swap plates on. then see where we go from there.

Sonar Chief 09-03-2015 10:06 PM

That looks really good  There is a hint of grey, yes? Wonder if that would be an alternative to hardcoating Al parts ....hmmmm?

Keep plugging away ... it's gonna get cold again real soon!

Michael

waynieZ 09-03-2015 10:10 PM

Cold for sure. The engine is gloss clear it does look darker in the picture.
I'm trying to get the gas service extended through the cellar to the garage and hopefully the heater installed.

waynieZ 09-04-2015 01:00 PM

More time in the garage today. We got the ZL1 lid on and the swap plates and motor mounts. We had to grind down the spacer plates from the back of the poly motor mounts so they would sit flat against swap plates, then I sprayed them with some paint to prevent any rust build up. If I would have thought of it before I painted the swap plate, I would have routed them out to fit. Lesson learned.
I had -12 AN fittings put on the the ZL1 lid so I can use a -12 to-16 hose fittings to matchup to my Stewart EMP water pump which has a 1" hose ends, it should make a difference in the IAT2 temps with more flow.

lsuguy 09-04-2015 04:29 PM

Looking good Wayne!

The Moreno brothers make it though for all of us. After seeing that engine/engine bay I just can't help but want to do some of the same. :G-Dub:

waynieZ 09-04-2015 05:04 PM

Rich you must have ESP I was going to E mail you to see how its going. I hope your getting a lot of mile on that car of yours.

Thanks guys! The planets have aligned for me to get some stuff done in the garage.

waynieZ 09-05-2015 09:26 PM

I spent most of the day in the garage working on getting the transmission prepped and clear coated. First I had to go and pick up a new respirator my old one failed on me when I painted the engine. I didn't smell anything but boy did I get dizzy and a head ache. Not good!
I washed it down and sprayed it and the dust cover. They look pretty good. This paint is easy to spray because I'm usually heavy handed when I spray but no sags with this paint.

Man..... this build is going FNQUICK!!! LOL

Looks good Wayne! Clearing it will certainly help to keep it clean or help to make it easier to clean when it needs it.

Car's looking great Wayne -- but about that mess in your garage.....:D

Pappy

waynieZ 09-06-2015 09:41 AM

MESS ! I just cleaned it....... That comes from a wife that's had enough and wants no more parts in the house because You have a garage now.

I feel like I'm in an episode of Get Smart where agents from Chaos have taken over my garage and are keeping me hostage.

Good Day In The Garage Today

Yesterday I went to my buddy's house and got the engine crane. Took it home and got it assembled and put the Mac's lift plate on the engine. Then the dreaded honey do list reared its ugly head and I was toast for the rest of the day!
But today was a good day! We hooked up the crane to the engine and rolled it over and within 30 minutes it was in! When we tried the first time the bolt on the driver side went right in. I couldn't believe my good luck, then the other side was not even showing the hole in the frame mount. CRAP ! We put the jack under the drivers side and lifted and I saw daylight on the passenger side mount. I worked a screw driver in and the bolt went right in. These plates were an excellent fit. Now if the headers fit with them like they are supposed to we'll be golden.

Here are some pictures.

First the money shot LOL

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...psh5m1zxfr.jpg

Plenty of room back here.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...psefya4ksx.jpg

I have an Auto Kraft oil pan on here and it has plenty of room with the factory frame mounts and steering. Not touching anywhere. I turned the steering both ways and no problem. I used the backing plates that came with the poly mounts. If I see there is enough room, I might try it without them but if it helps the headers tuck up tight to the floor they will stay. I have plenty of room above the Transmission because I had the tunnel raised just incase the T56 I was going to use was tight.

AWESOME Wayne, Huge step forward for sure looks great!!!

Great stuff Wayne, a huge step forward.:excited:

Al Moreno 09-16-2015 06:59 AM

That's what I'm taking about!!! Wow Wayne, it doesn't get much better then this. Im really happy to seee things coming together for you

waynieZ 09-16-2015 07:23 AM

Thank you Guys!
It was along time coming. Today we're going to try to put the 4l85 in to see if the headers will clear everything. I don't think ther'll be room for the o2 sensor where they have it mounted. I'll cap this one and mount it on the other side of the collector.

E.rodz 09-16-2015 08:41 AM

way to go Wayne! looks like you are going to get this thing on the road this year! i wish you the best luck buddy!keep chipping away and it will be done in no time!

waynieZ 09-16-2015 10:29 PM

Thanks Eric, ,Ececutor. Today we put the trans in. It's too close to the drivers side of the tunnel by quite a bit. Tomorrow we are going to loosen the motor mounts and if we can get at the the frame mount ( which look to be impossible to get at) to see if we can get it over to the passenger side. Has anyone ever seen or run into this problem? Like Mr Weld says that's hot rodding!
Pictures tomorrow.

TomM 09-17-2015 04:55 AM

Very cool....diggin the LSA engine....

T,

waynieZ 09-18-2015 10:13 PM

Thanks Tom. A little update we relieved some pressure on the frame mounts with the engine crane and got to the mounts and loosened them and got enough slack to push the trans over to center it.
I bought a used X Factor cross member a while back and never realized how its made. It's two maybe 3/16" thick pieces sandwiched together on each side of the trans mount platform. Different for sure. Its for a T 56 but it lines up pretty well. It will take some mods to get it to work but it will let me hold the trans up for us to get my drive line angle figured out.

waynieZ 10-03-2015 10:22 PM

I have a small update but first a question. I also asked in LSX conversions.
If I drop my motor mount point down 1/4"-3/8" will this give me any difference in my tranny mount height or will it just carry the same amount I drop to the mount? How many degrees could I gain either way if dropping the same amount if from the engine mount to the trans mount is 44" ? Or is this a crazy question?

Thanks in advance

Here's the reason why I ask.

This is what I have for space under the oil pan to my frame. about 5/8" I'm close to 3.5 - 4 degrees down now.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...pszqfc6u5e.jpg

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...pssfxswdwq.jpg

Here is what I have between my G Force cross member and the transmission mount. (That's a 2x4 on the flat) I could also use more room to keep the 4l85 lower in the tunnel. I need room for a connection on the drivers side.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...psc18ema5i.jpg

Spaceman and I fit the passenger header in and it fits with nothing hitting but some are close. collector to the floor is about 3/8" and to the idler arm is a c hair.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...psqyoqudry.jpg

02 sensor is a no go for sure it will have to be moved to the outside of the collector.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...psqpgycwqt.jpg

The frame mount it almost touching the header tube it will be trimmed.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...pssw8yf3l4.jpg

Jay Hilliard 10-05-2015 05:24 AM

Wayne,

Because you have an 4 deg down angle, lowering the front will lower the rear of trans slightly more. 1/4' lower in front should lower back of trans close to 3/8".

If their was no angle, it would be the same, because it would be on a parallel plane.

waynieZ 10-05-2015 04:16 PM

Thanks Jay. I figured the drop would get larger the further away from the lowering point because of the pitch but couldn't get my mind to figure it out.

waynieZ 10-07-2015 09:55 PM

Worked in the garage again yesterday. We lifted the motor to get the drivers side header in and put the metal spacer under the trans mount for the test. I got 3.80 degrees down the way it is. The best guess on the frame for level is .40 degrees down so 3.40 for the final angle. The rear needs to be worked on we changed shocks and didn't set ride height.

Both of the ARH headers are in and there is a ton of room on the drivers side, at least an inch away from any tube to the steering box. The collector is within 3/8" of the drivers side floor. The passenger side has plenty of room accept the idler arm was touching at full right lock. I adjusted the stop on the A arm and it's taken care of. The passenger side frame mount needs the upper rear corner trimmed, we will remove 1/2" diagonally. The headers look to have enough room to go back an inch without a problem which would probably take care of the frame mount and idler touching, but make the collector closer to the floor. with the 4l80 it would make the trans even tighter in the tunnel. Moving it forward the idler would prevent it. One thing is the 02 sensors won't fit where they have the bungs on the inside towards the trans on the 4l80 which has a very wide pan on it, but with the narrower T56 should fit. ?

I used a G Force 4l80 cross member and the trans mount needed a spacer. Spaceman made it from 1" square tubing. The only thing is, the cross member is the lowest piece under the car. I can see it being a problem when we hit the road. (figuratively I hope. ).

Here are a few pictures from underneath the car. The headers are even or maybe a little above the bottom of the sub frame.

This swap has
S&P swap plates to keep the bellhousing mount surface in the same place
American Racing Headers 1-7/8" 3" collectors. Very well made.
Energy suspension motor mounts to fit the 69, 350 SBC frame mounts.
An AuotKraft oil pan kit.
A G Force 4l80 cross member. Super Beefy.

awr68 10-10-2015 03:30 PM

looking good!

Quick question. Is this swap being problematic? If so, why would it be any different than a standard LSx swap? I thought these swaps have been figured out by now?

waynieZ 10-10-2015 03:49 PM

Hi Tony, Mostly they have been, but I had a set of headers I wanted to use ARH so I called them and they told me they used the S&P swap plates. I got the ones that put the block in the same place as the SBC. I got a 4l85 and motor in a connect and cruise kit from GM. The T56 and 4l60s fit in the tunnel better than this trans does (Especially since I had the tunnel raised)mostly because the 4l85 is so wide at the pan. If it was narrower I could stuff it into the tunnel and have a better drive angle. I don't really want to clearance the floor too much since its all finish painted.( My fault!) Right now the connection to the controller is right against the floor and I still need to connect the cable to it. It will be persuaded to make room.

awr68 10-11-2015 09:14 PM

I see. Thanks for the explanation. I figured there was something you were tiring to do that wasn't the norm. Nice to see it at this point of the build!

waynieZ 10-11-2015 10:25 PM

Thanks Tony, trying to get the cable operated hood figured, we made a couple of plate that Spaceman welded up for me.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...psqmlyamwr.jpg

This is a first test fit for the bottom.
