Getting work from other parts of the country is not uncommon in most shops that do quality work or high end work. I'm not sure if Greg liked what we did or just felt sorry for me. But I think most of the guys who understand the work and are able to have this kind of work done understand the likely hood of having someone down the street pull this stuff off is not the norm. Greg sees pics 3-5 times a week and we talk a couple times a week and probably email daily. He lets me sweat the details and I just bounce ideas and direction stuff off him try to build what he wants and is willing to pay for. Evey customers involvement is different. The effort these projects can take are crazy. That 48 truck we just finished for a local guy was built is about 15 months. There was about 2-3 full time guys on it almost the whole time, except when it was at paint. But we still had things to do during that time also. The customer of this truck has a few other projects lined up and has told me if I lived 60 miles away we would not be doing anything probably, because he likes to be involved in the entire project. The end result of taking the project home when your done is just icing on the cake. The devil is in the details. |

Greg lives near me, and I find it interesting he is using a shop in CA. I've often wondered if there are any good custom fab shops up here, I never seem to hear about any other than way out of my time and money budget Divers.
Just look up Gregs other thread and you'll find out why he goes to Cali.. |
There are a few very capable shops between Seattle and Cali. Its the owners decision and I'm sure research on who would build his next car.
When money isn't a factor the owner can get the car built anywhere he wants. I know I like to keep things local cause I can't afford all them trips to cali. I think in Greg's case it more of a relationship thing. You know "opposites attract" LOL.. |
Yeah I'm well aware of the whole shop issue. That's why I asked if there were any recommendations in this area. I do all my own work, so mostly I am just curious, but you never know there may be something I want to fab out someday. I'm good at the fabricating, just not so much at the cosmetic finishing thing. Really amazed to learn about his troubles with SAR, I always assumed they were top of the heap with what they do, what with all their custom fab panels from scratch and what not.
Love the build btw, if I could go back and start over I would definitely do a "barge touring" car. Right now my hot rod is pointless because I can't take my family in it so I only drive it for joyrides. Always wanted to do a '67 El Dorado in deep gloss black. Just keep it streetable smooth, smooth, smooth. |
Fuel tank progress, CTS-V pump in a stainless tank that fits in the stock floor. Should be right around 23 gallons.

Why does anyone do anything.....
Because they can. Because they want to. Preston -- I've built more cars MYSELF than many of these shops have done - EVER... But it takes longer and longer and the skills needed are higher and higher... and I'm older and older and frankly -- I'm building other stuff... There's lots of DECENT shops around locally --- and Timmy Diver is a personal friend... but builds like these are all about relationships and who has the idea you want - or thinks like you do... and Diver doesn't do "pro touring" - he only uses crate motors.... and his cars are mostly like what SAR does - SHOW CARS.... I don't do show cars. I like drivers that are built to show standards. Plus I like fine metal work (divers does this as well -- as does SAR)... But SAR proved they can't build a driver. Plus he has an attitude. I don't do attitudes. Somehow I always figure I'm the customer... he thinks you're lucky just stepping in his shop. Oil and water - they don't mix. There's about 5 other shops on LAT G that I'd have build a car... just off the top of my head. None of them are "around here". |
Sorry Greg thats what I meant to say..... I'll shut up now!!
