:thankyou: ... yeah the weather is cool and it's gonna rain later today, not optimal for spraying, we'll see if I can spray tomorrow!

There's always something else to do on the car :ohsnap:

Weather didn't look to good for the weekend so I sprayed SPI epoxy ... take a look! Getting the underside of the speaker tray was APITA and some of the roll bar has some dry spots I'll have to recoat, spraying a roll bar is tougher than it looks :headspin: ..... but overall came out nice!

Just checked the temp in the garage and it's 73 degrees and holding, guess my insulation is working

Thanks for looking ... more tomorrow!

looking really good

Sweet it's looking great.
Yeah the bars are very hard to get great coverage.
After I sprayed the color and clear I was ready for a long break.
Between the lighting and not accidentally touching the fresh color or clear with body parts, gun parts or the hose.
That got old really quick.
:hairpullout:

Che70velle 10-03-2015 08:43 AM

I truly enjoy following your build SC. I say to myself every time that I'm about to see work done the right way, and you never disappoint.
Agree with the roll bar comments. They are tough to get right.
Car is looking great!

Yeah prep took the longest time and then crawling under the roll bar was APITA ... the outcome was worth it thou!

:thankyou: Thanks guys! It's been a long road but she's coming together just like I see in my head. I want to do everything correctly and once!!!

Did some research and read some forums about roll bar paints and seems one of the favorites is Rustoleum appliance epoxy, durable is what I'm looking for ... so I sprayed the roll bar and the speaker tray. Went on really nice, couple spots I'll have to re-coat.

You have to wait a week before you can re-coat, ooops .... tried to touch up a dry spot on the tray and lifted the epoxy. I'll wait and sand it down and re-coat later.

You can see the difference in the sheen between the SPI epoxy and the appliance paint. Take a look ....

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...633/5r48U9.jpg

Since everything was dry I took my flexible sanding blocks and sanded the trunk and floor to get the overspray off ... that epoxy outa the spray can made a mess!!

Thanks for looking ...

love this thread.

XLexusTech 10-05-2015 05:51 PM

So, you just saved me some research.. appliance paint? where does one source such a paint? I am :EmoteClueless: I am going to be painting mine soon.... Did you Epoxy prime to etch into the metal?

A note one thig I was thinking.. was the belt bar, wrapping that after painting it... this way the belts banging off them won't scratch the crap out of them..

I bought Rustoleum at HD ... it's in their paint dept. That's exactly why I went with the appliance paint, supposed to be tough as heck .... just like your frig finish! I did epoxy prime before, SPI black and then spray bombed just the package tray and the roll bar ... it did make a mess w over spray thou :confused59:

Thanks for asking ...

Update 10/10

A little progress to show .... school is in session so I have allocated time to work on the Camaro. Welded the plates in the seat support back, and started fitting the outer AMD skin to the OEM window channel on the diver's side rear window. Left them screwed together and cut thru both pieces of metal at the same time ... came out ok!

I had previously welded on angle across the window opening for a reference ... the passenger side is a little wider and I have to put tension on the drivers side to get that gap ... so I'm just gonna put her back to where GM had it!

Take a look ...

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...908/tlQK8n.jpg
Gonna spray some Eastwood internal frame coating on the underside!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...631/SX0jlU.jpg
Held in place ... gotta close the gaps a little!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...911/XNOMgf.jpg
That's the pass side gap at the same spot against the driver's side gap... wider fer sure!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...903/ALtQJ6.jpg
Think I'll leave her the way GM had it .... crappy tolerances!

That's all for now ... gotta get some homework done now!

Thanks for looking ...

Sonar Chief 10-29-2015 04:59 PM

Update 10/29

Good day for some Camaro time! Had to use the welder for a heater thou ... yeah it's getting cold here!

Anyway, got the GM window channel welded to the crappy AMD quarter :bur2: , sanded and hand filed ... minimal skim coat of filler will be fine.

Now I have to weld in the GM corner piece here ... AMD stamping is crap!

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...907/4iV9OR.jpg
MO BETTER!!! It even lines up with the original braces I welded to the inner ... yeah!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...903/fvPY4M.jpg
This is the next piece that needs welded in ...
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...905/vbyuG6.jpg
I'll have to slice the quarter vertically and fix this mess ... that'll help w the door gaps too!
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...908/36k7BI.jpg
AMD ... this is what is supposed to look like!

Still plugging away between homework assignments ... hopefully I'll get that other inner corner welded in tomorrow and work on the vertical stuff later. She's getting there, just needed to TLC which AMD didn't bother to apply.

Thanks for looking ...

Then they went to the right build because you've given this project plenty of TLC! Nice job.

Wayne .... thanks, if not for all this TLC I might be driving my Camaro by now! The passenger side quarter is the same crappy stamping as the driver's side I'm working on ....grrrrrr :confused59:

Hi Chief

Hi, I admire your workmanship and dedication mate. It's a shame those quarter panels required so much work to get right, you'd expect much better, I could understand if they were cheap seconds out of Taiwan, I'm only new here as I've mentioned before, and I'm sorry that this will be of no help to you, but we recently fitted a pair of OER brand quarters on my 68 which went on really well, they were quite expensive down here, but it's now apparent they were well worth the money. Keep up the good work Chief. Cheers Trevor.

alongfortheride 11-01-2015 09:37 AM

Car looks really good. Are you using any other brand of replacement panels?

Thanks guys ... it's been a long road to get these AMD parts to fit like the OEM parts. There happens to be an AMD dealer here in town and if I need to return parts it's just a call away ... went through two sets of door skins at their cost!

We've called the AMD center with fitment issues and the answer we get when they check their back stock is "they all look like that!". Oh well... keep plugging away at perfection!

Thanks for checking, besides being cold as the dickens here I have been consumed with my last two class towards my MBA. The semester ended right before Xmas and then my boys came out for two weeks and when they flew home classes started again.

So priorities are obvious, the car is still sitting right here and can wait, gotta get my edumacation!

for me, working out of state takes a lot from car and family time, but maybe one day I'll get home, but like you said car can sit its not going anywhere,

Steve ... thanks for checking in, wow.... it's been awhile!

I'm still here, well in Hollister CA now! Been awhile since I got to work on the car, now that I'm in CA I can work on it through the winter .... yeah!

HOLLY RUST already! Got the garage sorta organized and looked over the car and saw surface rust already, I've only been here a week ... wasn't expecting that! Time to break out the fiber wheels and get that off there. Sure glad I epoxied the roll bar and the interior before I left

Jay is totally worth it. They know their stuff. I used to be in a 4WD club with them in the early 2000's. They blossomed nicely in their business over 10 years.

If I didn't do it myself, they would be doing it.

Roberts68 04-09-2016 05:02 PM

Great to hear from you again Chief.
Those headers look like they'd enjoy an abrasive media blast and ceramic coat at the Spa! Too many books and crannies to disc them well.

Looking forward to more updates, yours is one of the few builds I follow on here. You are in company with anything of Stielow's and Daves BMF if that makes you feel good, I hope it might.

I got a tour of their shop and they had some pretty cool stuff in there!

Yeah, the headers will need a day at the spa ... I will send them out for ceramic coating here real soon, even saved the AME box just for that purpose! Seems the rust was accelerated from road salt, even thou the car was covered the underside still sustained salt spray from the road ... grrrrr!

I will have updates here real soon ... Thanks for looking.

Sonar Chief 04-16-2016 09:21 PM

Update 4/16

Cutting up some more of the AMD quarter panel ... trying to get the door gaps better than a 1/2 inch!!! Figured it was easier to metal work the angles of the door jamb that were rounded with the quarter off, and no tension on the panel ... yeah I'm backwards thinking too! Got it to 3/16" metal working the jamb area and I haven't used any gap spray yet :ohsnap:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/B5E8Jx.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/NfT6d1.jpg
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/u8wMZY.jpg

Now I'll put the quarter back on and see how much of gap I'll have to fill in with metal, I'm guessing 3/16" in most places .... been a good day in the garage!

Thanks for looking ....

Ain't that the truth ...

Worked on the door gaps, it's closer now ... It's real close a little more work and it's good enough to body work w a little steel filler. The edges will need to be crisper to match the oem look.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/0GZzvl.jpg
A lot of hand filing ...
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/l0aD4h.jpg
Pretty close w a file.

Body lines are still good!

More betta ...

I'll finish metal working the quarter and start on the rear fitment to get her looking like GM built them.

Just getting some air!

Been plumbing my Max line air system this weekend ... nothing to fancy, just some 3/4 copper, 7 trips to Ace Hardware, drain line, a desiccant filter and then the 3/4 Rapid Air line w 2 drops. So far so good, only had one mulligan w the copper, and it took quite awhile to uncoil the blue line, you think it's hard to uncoil brake lines? I'll finish it up tonight hopefully.

Take a look ....

Roberts68 05-08-2016 05:46 PM

My $.02 of criticism is you may want to replace the first section and/or Union with a length of hydraulic hose. Your compressor will vibrate and a flexible hydraulic hose can deal with that better than rigid copper, is not too expensive, can handle the heat and pressure with ease.

That might be more like $.02 in criticism , $.03 of suggestion and $.04 of reasons... But I am still shy of a dime invested.

I have had great luck with 20' of 3/4" line before any drip legs and/or water separator. I hardly get any moisture anymore.
