Since I added the two small carbon fiber vents, I found a supplier that has very high quality vents made with aluminum. I installed Trackspec vents on my C5 and love them. I got with them to make one large vent for my Camaro. I installed it a few weeks ago and I really like it. Next week, I will be running the car at the Optima Search of the Ultimate Street Car event at Charlotte, North Carolina. Hope to see you there.

It should do wonders. I have not tracked the car yet. Charlotte on the big oval should be a huge test.

Ron in SoCal 07-19-2015 04:17 PM

Brian is that the standard c5 or 6 center vent or did they custom contour it for your second gen?

Looks good man

Chad-1stGen 07-19-2015 05:23 PM

Cool tip Brian.

I've been thinking a lot about hood vents lately but hadn't researched add on manufactures like these. I like that they are local too.

WSSix 07-19-2015 07:12 PM

That looks good, Brian. Hope it works well for you. Good luck at Charlotte.

Ron,

This was the first production of this size. It should work on any 2nd gen Camaro. We made mine to match the angle of my stripe on the sides and nose.

It was cool to finally see your car in person this weekend...sorry it didn't go so well.

Hello Mr. Hobaugh,

I've found a photo of this car on a quick search on the net, followed the link to the "HeelToeDriving" article and from there to this great thread here. I'm completely blown away by this build. An absolutely amazing work!

The car is basically perfect except for two things. The second set of wheels you've chosen are absolutely fugly. Infact they actually aren't but they simply don't suite the car as much as the satin black ones. Then there is the new hood with the vent. I know there are simple functional reasons for it but the old, slightly raised one suited the car much better. But that's just my personal opinion and taste. Infact you could have painted it pink and it would still be awesome.

Just as a sidenote. I've also found the video about your families '65 Sting Ray and want to mention that this one is a stunning car, too.

Good luck to you and your whole family. Keep up this great spirit!

With the steering, we tossed that around also. After much discussion and pooling all of our driving experience with many similar cars, we decided to go with the stock type steering but with quality, race proven products. Reliability, part availability, and most important, driver feel were considered. We all picked stock design over rack and pinion. Others may have a different opinion, but we are very confident with our choice.

Digging up an old post here, but why steering box? Obviously the fabrication for putting a rack in didn't scare you guys. Assuming bump steer, ratio, etc. are the same, shouldn't the steering feel be exactly the same? Could the desirable amount of bump steer not be achieved with a rack in your situation? I'm stuck between the the two for my car right now.

I am not a steering rack expert by any means, so I am not the one to give you the best answer. For packaging, ease of changing ratios relatively cheaply, and for the proven and simple old way of doing things, this worked best for me. I like the feel of a good old box and good pump and with our custom steering arms it seems to work good.

Since all the photos are gone due to Photobucket, I will load a few photos to summarize the build of my Camaro for those that have not seen them.

This is how the build started.

I stumbled across this video made of the build of my 1973 Camaro. Since all of the photos are gone from the original thread, here they are in a video.

GregWeld 02-09-2018 07:09 AM

Love this Camaro -- and that 'Vette ain't bad either! LOL

Hi buddy!!

Amazing work, great build.

frojoe 02-09-2018 12:15 PM

In all the years since this thread was started... this is still THE coolest track-inspired no nonsense 2nd gen around. Sure there are more expensive ones, ones with more billet or fancy leather interiors and turbo's and superchargers.. but this one is just so raw and purposeful.

waynieZ 02-09-2018 09:46 PM

Wow, very nice !

grendel 02-10-2018 08:55 AM

How did you mount your hood latches?

I am still fighting with the location of mine, for the carbon fiber hood.

gnx7 02-10-2018 08:57 AM

Great Video! Mike Maier did one hell of a job fabricating that all up!

What was the final weight total full of fluids less driver?

Man, do I ever so agree with this statement.

I'm pretty sure that given the size of Brian's engine his car has to weigh 3200lbs. I'm not sure if they had to add lead to get to that weight.
