Two plug wires switched, I'd smell that from the house. :unibrow: :D

Yep -- I hear ya!

Chasing so many other little stupid things... and it's mostly just been on and off the trailer. But when I actually drove it - something just wasn't kosher... I just had to figure out what it was.

toddshotrods 06-30-2011 02:42 AM

Wow! :( So glad you're finishing the job yourself. This story deserves a happy ending.

These are the kinds of "DETAILS" that kill me on a high dollar professionally built hot rod....

Could we just match the screw heads? Amazingly sloppy work... just amazing.

Agreed 1000%. I would be ashamed of doing that on my driveway-budget build.

A flat head wood screw? WTF? Why would they even HAVE one of those to mis-use?

COME ON! I mean, we're talking about a ''prefoessional'' restoring team, they are more than prepared and all that stuff, I don't know, I'm not trusting the quality of the work done there.

Shouldn't the real blame be pointed at the shop teachers in the Portland Public School system?!

I don't know.... I graduated from the Portland public school system (well actually I dropped out my junior year of HS - but I did get a GED and stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once) and I wasn't ever shown that this kind of inattention to detail was acceptable.

MARIO ---

Now you (and everyone else) can perhaps understand my frustration... I am now at the state of just shaking my head and chuckling to myself... it's like WTF.... just grab a tool and fix it... no point in stressing out. The issues with the car have all been MINOR.... but MINOR adds up after awhile. So far its been just one thing after another.

Greg,

Agreed. Incredibly short-sighted by SAR.

Bizarre.

They could have at least gotten you a 6/32 FH screw w/black painted head from the electrical aisle at home depot...

Nah...... now you're talking about actually using a brain. That is asking for far too much!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAA

I can just mosey over to the big blue drawers full of SS button heads... grab a couple - hit 'em on the Baldor... and do the job I paid them to do. :unibrow:

Vegas69 07-01-2011 09:14 PM

Do me a favor, quit bitching and go out and break in the rings on that cream puff, would ya? ;)

Thanks Scott... I'm sorting out some stupid little things -- nothing major now. Kugel replaced the stub axles and made me some larger dia half shafts... but I've yet to "test them". I will... :unibrow:

I've found just dumb mistakes - mismatched bolts/screws... but other than that it's been very uneventful. I didn't drive it at all this weekend... since my Brother in Law is here this weekend and we're thrashing on his '69 Camaro... it's a big job - new sub - new motor - complete wiring - gutted interior etc. So I'm concentrating on getting them back on the road (so I can get my Nomad back... :D )

These were taken this weekend.... I slicked and painted his firewall - and the inner fenders.... and we're now at reassembly... Blown 383 made 625HP on the dyno and 581 ftlbs of TQ..

I wouldn't have it - but it's not mine and he's not actually interested in turning a corner....

It was fun to come up with a "re-join" of the square sub frame connectors to the round back end of the TCI. I just ended up making a box one piece at a time and cut a 2" radius in the flat stock - then split it in half - so I got a good proper weld joint on the top and bottom pieces... it worked out okay.

That was his ONLY reason for choosing the TCI -- it's a "pro street" tube chassis look. It's very appropriate for the car. It will be far far superior to the worn out sagging OEM version that was in there!

No -- You have gotten the wrong impression.... please re-read my post and you'll see that the only reason it's being put back together is because RUDY is here for the weekend - and it is HE that knows a socket from a hammer. Not I. I'm merely his helper.

rwhite692 07-04-2011 10:42 PM

coolwelder62 07-05-2011 05:29 AM

Greg, sometime time in the next few week's I will be in your area.I could stop by and point out the diff. between socket's,hammer's,& screw driver's.I can also show you how to plug in your welder. Just trying to be helpful.

96z28ss 07-06-2011 10:33 AM

The camaro is looking great. Can't wait to see it at beaches cruise in.
I'm sure Rudy can't wait either.

Well sadly (or happily) I have to report on the ongoing saga of the '32....

I found time to get off Lat G and head to the shed to check a few things. Actually - I got the Camaro on all fours and could finally use my lift for MY cars.:D

I had reported the oil smoke on deceleration and then when you got back on the gas.... and I'm happy to report that pulling the intake manifold confirmed my suspicions. It was by far the worst manifold install in the history of the galaxy (thanks Al Moreno for that one!). Some of the bolts were finger tight - and NONE had sealant or anything else on them.... and the gaskets were not sealed to the heads or intake except a little bit around the water passages. THEY FELL OFF... and the oil was not just weepage - it was a river of oil between the gaskets and ports.

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_1163.jpg

NOTE THAT OIL WAS BEING SIPHONED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE GASKET IN A NUMBER OF PORTS

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_1166.jpg

Note another issue I discovered..... the shoulders on the ARP bolts have a nice "interference fit" (like a main cap) with the header - so it was actually IMPOSSIBLE to tighten them up.... I removed them and walked over to the Burr King - made the shoulder of the bolt smaller - and re-installed. Now they will actually torque down the header. I PHOTOGRAPHED this one as found when I started working on this project.

wow! Yeah, mechanically that place is lost, over their head on really basic parts of a car build. Glad you're getting it sorted.

brakenit 07-07-2011 08:36 AM

Those types of mistakes would be disappointing coming from a high school vocational class, let alone a high end shop. Complacency and stupidity can be a dangerous combination. I hope you made sure all of the lug nuts are torqued down.

Ketzer 07-07-2011 09:18 AM

I hate to mention this... at what point do you decide to dis-assemble the whole car and re-assemble it? With all that you've shown in the past few weeks, I would be nervous about driving it at all.
You are a man of true patience, persistance, and definately, definately forgiveness.

Jeff-

James OLC 07-07-2011 10:00 AM

Glad you were able to figure that out Greg!

I've seen stuff like the header bolt deal happen before and I've never understood the mentality of the guy who had to have known about the issue but chose to (a) send it out anyways and (b) not mention it to anyone.
