Morning Sandro Thank you very much and since I really don't have time or the desire right now to build another car my plan is to update this car four or five times before it gets really nice paint. This way I can enjoy it and not worry about a new project. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
One thing that has always bothered me with old cars is how close the seats are to the dash. I remember as a kid my buddy's father built a set of set back plates so he could fit behind the wheel. He also built another set to lift the seat up an 1.5" higher for his daughter. All I need to feel comfortable is to slide the seat all the way back and a different dish on the steering wheel. However, if someone other then me were to drive the car and they happens to be taller then me they are going to want slide the seat back much further.
I was about to make a set when I noticed that Ricks Camaro stocks such and item. So I figure I might as well order them to see if I would like them. I did the passenger side first since the car was backed in on my lift and of course they made a big difference. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4ca265f62e.jpg Quick test fitting and I determined I would need longer hardware. I just hate it when I come up short by a 1/4 of an inch. It's a good thing the local Sears is only one mile away. For now I picked four 1.5'' x 5/16 Grade 8 bolts so I could finish the project today. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...cd27d1c641.jpg From this pictures you can see just how much further back the seat is and when you sit in the passenger seat you no longer feel like your right on top of the dash. It's amazing the difference few inches will make. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e91dc8ea68.jpg Next up is to order all of the correct ARP hardware from the guys at Totally Stainless and of course have Mr Trim make me a set of trim pieces to cover up the set back plates. Hopefully something simple or maybe I will make a fiberglass piece and spray it with some wrinkle paint to make it look factory. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fe54487f76.jpg This pictures lets you see just how much of a difference these plates have made. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...80fcc5ef31.jpg That's all for now folks. |
I finally picked up the new bolts from Fastenal now my seat studs will be the correct length.

Marty,
I sense a cohesive interior design plan unfolding before us. Are you sure that's a good thing? :P |

Oh I've got a few thoughts spinning around in my head. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Wow, you wanted the seats further back than stock? Don't ever jump in my TA or any vehicle I drive without checking the seat first then. Compared to you, I sit on the steering wheel. I'm 6' with a 31" inseam, wear a 32/33 shirt, and can't imagine trying to drive the car with the seat all the way back.
Doing good work as always, Marty. |
Nice updates Marty!
I hadn't seen the cage install - that looks badass! I've been slammed with this LSA install on my SS. |
I can finally start updating again as I have been fighting with my old hosting company ( Site5 or should I call them sh!t5 ) as they locked me out and would't let me access my sites.
So if you are in need of web hosting stay away from site5 - they suck !!! |

lol it's more for the taller guys with long legs that I slid the seats back. I'm only one click back from stock and it feels great. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Moving on the front suspension.
First step was to clean it and the start taking it apart so I could install the ARP bolts with stainless Nylock nuts. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...99ab0e1200.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...327105e355.jpg We also needed to cut the ears out of the spring pockets as there was some interference with the Ride-Tech shocks. While I was in there we sprayed a little Eastwood chassis black rust inhibitors up in the pocket. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...73e560fa8a.jpg There's a good story here but make sure you buy at least two of them if you need to finish a project. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5928e71cd2.jpg Yes we bought two on the 2nd trip. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c40ee7432e.jpg That would be Mike cutting and getting metal shavings all over him. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...29b6c04718.jpg The ARP hardware was supplied in kit form from the guy's at Totally Stainless. Very nice and it helps to keep you organized while your working on the car. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4e31c54550.jpg We're all good now. Time to start the assembly. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...cc20d96e77.jpg Bummer steering box bolts area little short. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...376c316f75.jpg Moving on. We had to drill out the sleeves for the ARP Bolts as the 1/2 bolts would not slide through the sleeve. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8edcc21439.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bcb6c8c1f0.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f03eca50ac.jpg That silver you see is this nightmare sh!t. Just ask Mike and no Mikey doesn't like that anti-seize at all. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6b80919734.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Last week Dennis at High Speed Welding needed a car for a local Cruise Night (Insert Chevy Night) that he was sponsoring. Since they did a bunch of work on the car prior to it going to Kenny's. My car was the perfect choice for him. Of course Mike & I only finished the drivers side of the car and more importantly the car didn't have working brake lights. So the brakes light became the priority. To add to the time crunch I only had one nigh to get the brake light work as my daughter was graduating 8th grade the next day.
So a quick trip out to the garage when I got home from work at 8:30pm and I dove right into trying to figure out the issue. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...860ee2a088.jpg Good news is it was a simple fix it was only a bad ground and loose bulb. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f39054a206.jpg The next day I dropped the car off 1 hour before we had to leave for graduation and I picked the car up after graduation. The one thing that bothered me was the fact that I didn't have time to Install the seat belts. So that will be the next project. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
lol, I used that same POS cut off wheel from Harbor Freight to cut my subframe for the same reason. Worth every penny though even if I never use it again. I had no other way to make those cuts to get the coil overs in place.

I glad we feel the same way. I gave Mike the extra one as one day he may need it and I kinda felt bad the he volunteered to cut it for me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Moving on I wanted to connect the Seat Belt Planet harness's to the factory floor location and the Ride-Tech Tiger Cage.
Step one pull the seats back and then locate the factory holes in the floor. ( Third or Fourth time now since the car has been home ) Thankfully I have a lift so poking a hole from the underside is fairly easy to do. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5322cab881.jpg Since the car is on the lift I had to climb up a ladder to get back to the inside of the car so I could widen the hole in the carpet. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...19d57178aa.jpg Time to clean up the threads as they have a little bit of bed liner in them. Of course when your spinning a tap you catch the padding and some or the wool carpet. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...25cac39347.jpg Quick trip to Sears hardware to get a flange bolt and two nuts. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7f414e58f5.jpg Added a couple grade 8 washers from my hardware collection. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b7ca56ca06.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...52f4b3faa3.jpg The next step was fun trying to locate the holes on the rocker side. Yep this side is going to be difficult s the carpet is glued down and I can barely squeeze my hand under the door bars on the tiger cage. So I gently peal back the carpet, stuff my hand down under the carpet and had to feel for a hole. Found it!! Now I have to poke a hole in the carpet and good news I only had to poke it 3 or 4 times. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...54cd4eba88.jpg Belt is in. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d1f8f137dd.jpg One final detail that not a sole will ever see unless the car is on a lift. I added a flange nut on the inside of the trans tunnel as I felt the bolt sticking out looked unfinished. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...853e5b905f.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...02aedef145.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Marty- This is a great build. I've got my old '70 1/2 RS camaro from high school I'm restoring. I'm 6'5" and really appreciate the seat relocation brackets you used. Those are definitely going in my car too. Also will be using the TMI seats you used. Did TMI make the headrest for you to match the '70 original? Didn't really like the TMI headrests they offer, so glad to see you were able to arrive at a better option. They look great. |
Why not put the seat belts on the tiger cage?
|
Quote:
As for the seats / headrest. Yes TMI did both. I can send you there Concept drawings and pattern numbers if you like. So when you call them you can reference my order. Martinjmcguire at Comcast.net Quote:
I will be using the the harness bar on the Tiger cage for the shoulder restraints. Just didn't have the correct 7/16" hardware. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
The Ride-Tech sway bar comes powdered coated in a black wrinkle finish which is very nice. However, I like to be a little different and I felt I needed to change it just a little bit and a color change should do the trick.
A quick to Pro-Tek powder coating in Joliet so Jay could strip the old powder off and then powder it in his brightest Red. What a difference. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0f48e6c45d.jpg btw this thing weighs a ton. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
My plan was to install the sway bar myself so I wrapped it in blue painters tape.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c0a05d4dc7.jpg Next up was to lay out the hardware. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0c4b12348e.jpg Need to call the guys at Totally Stainless as the sway bar end link bolts & sleeves where both short. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...305b35c051.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d30f494d37.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f4a9d0fdd6.jpg I quickly realized that I needed help so I asked my wife for a little help. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f97b127757.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2cbcabb033.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...05f457d273.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...16a5edd956.jpg Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
My plan is to swap out all the sheet metal hardware with ARP / Totally Stainless body hardware. First up where the inner fender bolts that attached the carbon liners to the fenders.
The stock bolts just look nasty and needed to be replaced. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...99a3147d9d.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...45347d9bf6.jpg I intentional ordered these bolts longer then needed as I plan to install an ARP 6 point nut and washer. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ca807a6fad.jpg Since the front wheels were off this was the perfect time to actually clean the wheels. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a463a3d476.jpg Now I have to take the rears off as the fronts look so much better Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Still plugging away at all the little stuff.
Ordered a few more ARP nuts, bolts & washers. I wanted to finish up the hardware under the hood and I didn't care for the bolts poking up into the engine bay. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a466e1b3f1.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1736175771.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f82ead5d4b.jpg I also installed the final four bolts in the Ride-Tech Tiger Cage. Now my harness's are secure. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3557b25270.jpg Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
I also started cleaning the rear tires.
It's hard to believe the tires were this dirty https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fc7ad8fd7b.jpg Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
I love me the look of some ARP bling!! Nice.

Soap and water first then I let the dry for a day. Then I sprayed the entire tire with no-touch tire cleaner by Armor all. Let's it soak in for an hour and then wiped them dry. Then I used good old Mothers quick detailer on the rims. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Why couldn't u just drive it in the monsoon's you've been getting? its just water lol

Good news my daughter Kenzie and I took the 70 out for a shake down and good news we only had one loose bolt when we returned home and it was cosmetic.
Still have bunch to do but that's the fun part about having one of these cars. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...364943cf6d.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Will chains fit? Hate to see it get put away...when cold comes...:action-smiley-027:

Funny thing is it only snowed three or four times last winter. So I might not need chains.

Okay it’s been a long time since I did an update. So here is just a quickie. What started out as a fuel line leak turned into a while we are here moment.
Long story short the rear diff is out and heading to the powder coater. Once I get garagescene.net back up I’ll post up more pictures. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fe60b8bc19.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Wow...just wow.
:shakehead: 9 months...we deserve so much more. :P |
So since I accidentally posted this in (70 Camaro's) build thread which I noticed yesterday and yes I feel horrible about doing that because well i just do. Plus his car is so awesome and if you haven't seen it go look at it.
https://lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php?t=51291 Just look at this beast, it's freaking awesome and when I finally paint my car a color I am seriously going to consider painting it red like his car. This is not my car it's (70 Camaro's car) and i just realized I don't know his name. https://lateral-g.net/forums/attachm...1&d=1535327225 Okay so back to my 10 footer Since this project was never designed to be finished and would be something that I could work on f or years. It’s time to move to the next stage of wrapping the headers and installing DEI heat shields on top of the mufflers as the rear floor gets a little hot from the mufflers. So let’s not talk about why we had to cut the exhaust and just say that slip fit was a bad idea. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0dc4c419cd.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...95e5643d18.jpg As you can see Mike looks very serious. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a36c2a4a1d.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f7ca778142.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0863d460f7.jpg Thank you again Mike for all of your help. |
Moving on to the header removal. Okay let’s just say this design worked perfectly as it was a 20 minute job to remove them.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6e6993a8da.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7897efb191.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0ff7c92111.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0b6b776c74.jpg When they go back in there will be ARP Header Studs going back in. Just a quick shot of the Powder Coated rear end. Need to take inventory of all the hardware and order the new ARP 6 point stainless bolts and new EBC rotors in black. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...16f4970f82.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...feb2dcabd1.jpg |
Almost forgot that I worked on three fat bikes and did a carbon bar swap on Mikes 27.5 mid-fat bike.

I loved riding street bikes in my younger day, only difference is now I need seat from a 50's Super Glide. You know the one that's about the size of a trailer fifth wheel...........

So the header are back from getting coated and the down tubes are wrapped in DEI Ti Thermal wrap. I also added studs to make it even easier to install the headers which takes all of 10 minutes for both sides.
