Only when your stuff gets taken by some dill weed and wrecked or damaged does one figure "it" out. Time will handle that.

Back in "the day" -- like 1971 -- I owned a 66 Vette coupe. It happened to have A/C and power windows.. My parents had a Ford F-250 with a camper on it. We swapped that summer so they could drive my nice A/C car to Carson City to see my grandparents... I used the Camper to hit the Oregon coast...
My car came back wrecked. I had a 2008 BMW M5 -- I have two college kids... one boy - one girl. Alex is home for break... and I'm out at a car show - so I call him and ask him if he wants to come out and meet me - of course he wants to drive the "5" out - which I allow - with the usual admonition - BE CAREFUL and don't hot rod it! It's parked out back by "the shed" -- it's a long driveway -- but also very wide! He doesn't make it to the street - Bent the rim on a Forgiato 3 pc'r - tore up the back bumper (plastic crap) and destroys the tire... He calls me and tells me the 'news' - to which I said - WTF were you doing?! He says he was being careful but didn't see the big rocks at the end of the driveway... BS! He was doing the stereo - or texting - of whatever... but whatever it was - it wasn't DRIVING! Can't turn this kind of crap into the insurance... the tire and rim is $900 and the paint etc is another $1500... I hate him for the rest of his break. He hasn't driven any of 'our' cars since - that was a year ago. I have cool cars - he would really really like to drive a couple of them - that ain't happenin' until there is serious pain seared into his pea brain... Adrienne gets to drive 'em all -- she hasn't scratched one yet -- and because she respects the power etc - and is 'afraid' of them - I've had no 'reports' of her hammering 'em. Where I live - everyone knows my cars - and I'd hear about it before she even got home! |
That sucks.... lesson learned for him(HOPEFULLY)... brings back some memories for me! Thankfully, I wasn't driving like an idiot but I did take my dad's 34 Ford out with a couple buddies when I was about that age(20 years ago). I had a 67 Chevelle at the time but it was probably apart in the garage or something. Anyway, I was driving down the street minding my own business when this lady pulls out of a side street without even looking, sending me into oncoming traffic and into a head on collision with a full size Dodge van! Needless to say, it wasn't pretty. My dad and I have always had a great relationship and he let me drive his cars pretty much whenever I wanted(and still does!). After all, he was the one that gave me this "sickness". Actually, the year before that, I drove it down to Kentucky from Michigan with a friend for the Street Rod Nationals, but that's another story. Anyway, the lady never saw any of this but the guy behind me saw the whole thing right in front of him. He told me to hop in his car and we'll stop her. Got up to the next light and I jumped out of the guys car and went up to her to tell her what happened. I then got in her car and made her go back to the scene of the crime where she got a ticket.
After all that, my dad settled with the insurance company, got the wrecked car back, sold it, and ended up getting more money than if he would have sold it before the accident! Best part is, he was planning on selling it anyway. Win, win. |
Lucky break on the crash/ sale thing Jeff.
I was not so lucky. I had a decent '68 rs Camaro and didn't respect the power and lack of brakes (4 wheel drum). I was 18 and even more stupid than I am now (20 years later I still learn stuff the hard way, must be genetics?). Anyway, while waiting to make a left turn through oncoming traffic I saw a SMALL opening and showing off for my buddies in the car lit up the tires, started sliding the back end to the right then caught traction. I was launched into a Ford LTD waiting on the other side of the road I was turning onto. My car was totaled, his car looked like someone went at it with a can opener from the back of the door to the rear bumper. I felt like a total idiot and paid dearly for it. The big difference? It was MY camaro that I PAID for. I also paid for all of the damage to the Ford I hit. Kids and fast cars can be a disaster. But it's when no lesson is taken from it that those kids need to be removed from the driving population. I was on the bus for a year after that and I learned a valuable lesson. I hope my son learns from my mistakes and not his own. |
