i think the cams are just much smaller with a lot less overlap as you mentioned. ive always heard that quiet motors are the most efficent, and im not talking about slapping different mufflers on them to get that effect.

How come theres no love for Ford's new COYOTE!!!!!!

Sick, who's building that for you?

Glad to see you doing cutting edge work here! Super cool! |
^ Greg - You are right about Ford being late to the game, but they're here now. Full page ads in the mags, multiple choice for displacement, good HP numbers with only a 5.0 and 32 valves (sexy to me). Street prices are similar to LS series. I even have a buddy who has a 2010 100 mile drop out w trans he's looking to sell.
I'm a GM guy, but to the Ford faithful I'd think this is cause to celebrate! As far as aftermarket support, I can only imagine it's right around the corner... |
You are correct Ron, Ford is finally trying to get competitive. I don't think they will ever reach the popularity of LS engines though. They sound way cooler in my opinion, and the blown 5.4 is awesome, but packaging it is going to discourage a ton of people. These mod motors are HUGE and are not simply a bolt in affair like LS engines are.
Also, the Coyote is a good deal but Ford motors are still expensive. If you want 500-600 horsepower out of a mod motor with an aluminum block you're looking at spending about 15 grand or more. Matt |
Pics or it didn't happen Matt...

Yep Matt.... that was my point. HP is HP -- and the Ford offerings are hugely disproportionately expensive and complicated. Try dropping one of these in a simple application such as my '32 or '37 Ford -- and you're talking custom headers - a lack of accessory drive choices... and on and on. In the end - you end up with a very expensive homage to a "Ford in a Ford". |
IMO it seems the aftermarket is on the bandwagon supporting these 5.0 Coyote swaps into popular Ford vehicles of any age.
This one looks and sound good too. http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...h_P1000263.jpg Here's the build thread on the '65 Shelby Hertz clone. http://www.modularfords.com/forums/s...=1#post1660423 Short version here. http://www.pro-touring.com/showthrea...ersion-Project |

Hell, I might even keep the log manifolds. I Might have to go with a dry sump to be able to drop the engine a couple inches. The height from the bottom of the frame rail to the top of the hood is about 30" :_paranoid I think the real reason Greg doesn't want to put a mod motor in a '32 is because he'd end up with a roadster so tall he'd have to use a step rail from an F350 to get in. These engines are stupid tall...like Rodger tall. If I wasn't trying to build a car on a "budget" I'd build a Coyote 5.0 with a whipple and a forged bottom end. 650hp with the ability to happily rev to 7000rpm (or more) is just downright cool. There is also a company making a 351 stroker kit... Matt |
Without any other mods the 2011 Mustang 5.0 made 389 at the wheels with the addition of long tube headers.
http://www.mustang50magazine.com/tec...ir_intake.html IIRC adding a tune and other normal bolt-ons those cars are over 500 fwhp already. |
^ Great post Matt! "Roger tall" had me laughing...:)

I like what Hollywood Hot Rods did with the new 5.0 DOHC for their Raybestos Brakes project.

Hey Skip - I saw that car at SEMA. HHR took all the FI off, modded the valley cover and fabbed up some old school Ford 427 valve covers. Came out pretty nice!
Edit: was that in the video? |
You don't even want to know what the HHR Coyote motor cost to make it cool looking like Troy did that one.... :unibrow:

A shop owned by a good friend of mine. They do a lot of Ford stuff, but he's an old Pontiac guy. They are going to fab the top of the tunnel ram base and mount the big Accufab throttle body on the front. Already have the valve covers setup for the 8 coils. The T&D shaft setup is getting installed on the heads in a week or so. Were pretty sure it will make ~720 HP normally aspirated. The Procharger should add another 450 easy. Street/strip. LSM in Detroit did the CNC lightening. The detail work is amazing. Block is 245# as cast. Its 185# now. And still way strong enough for what Im building. |

581BBC with an F2 procharger set back as far as possible.

You dog . I just posted in your thread over at 'tech yesterday (flash911 over there). Welcome to Lat G! You really need to do a build thread...
That would be a RHS 460 exotic heads you guys are looking at. It's gonna break the bank on the dyno... |

Ford all Aluminum 4.6 3-valve in my 65 Falcon. Already picked up stage II ported heads and cams. Plan for a mild 450hp NA, if that ever becomes boring I will step it up with a procharger.
