Actually Dave, Erik has been working on your car all week and it looks awesome, but you might have to wait to see pics of the progress now. And Eric's car is set to continue surgery late next week after we get Brent's 55 wrapped up or until he adds one more thing while it is here. :D
|
We are finishing up the Rear quarter and trunk floor replacemnet soon. But I figured I would give you some teaser pics to Keep your interest.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...27-2009003.jpg We have what would equal a 295/35 tire mocked up. It might need a bit of surgery on the fender but it should not be a problem. http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...27-2009004.jpg Eric (HWY NOVA) and I have been working on some wheel designs for his convertible and we came up with a few designs we are looking to possibly market. They will have a Monoblock design and will be able to have design elements of a Monoblock but be little more affordable. They will be expensive but look at the possible details in this design. Plus they have 11 spokes, not 10. http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...pokewheels.jpg |
Those wheels are going to look killer.

AS of today, the time line of this project got bumped up.
OPTIMA BATTERIES asked if we would be interested in running the Silver State Classic on September 17-20th. I have talked to the guys here at the shop and as long as we can pull it off MONEY wise we will be in. So We will display the car at Pleasanton the end of August In the Chassisworks booth and then prep the car for the Silver State Classic under the Sponsorship of Optima Batteries |
That's awesome Rodger - see you there!

I guess it is time for the monday morning update.
The Rear quarters, floor and outer wheel tubs from Classic Industries are all landed and tacked in the car. We decided to make our own package tray and the section from the package tray to the rear winodow channel. Our Custom build 35 spline axles from Strange Engineering arrived, We are waiting on our "NEW" 35 spline truetrac to be avaliable to get the built to order center section from Strange Engineering some time next month. The 14" Wilwood brakes have arrived and we installed them for mockup both front and rear. The anodized black Ring Brother hinges have been installed, They work so smooth. We have a set of Ring Brother hood pins, but cannot install them until we get the front sheetmetal fit perfectly. Those beautiful Anvil Auto carbon parts are hard to repair if you damage them, so measure twice cut once. We had a small problem with getting to run the Silver State Classic next month. The rollcage we had choosen from Chassisworks was an 1.625 cage. We choose that to save weight and in any of the sanctioning bodies we would have ran, they would not have required anything more. Well as soon as we are going to run the Silver State faster then 125, they required a 1.75" x .120 DOM cage. We cannot run that fast our first year, but I hate having to go back and change stuff. Chassisworks said they would get us a 1.75" cage but they were out of stock and it would be 2 weeks. Well when you have 7 weeks to get the car running 2 weeks is alot of time to be set back. So I decided we would pass on the Silver State this year and just focus on being ready for the Optima Street Car Shootout in November. Well Enjoy the pics and lets see how much we get done this week. 10 days till she has to be in Pleasanton in the Chassisworks booth. http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...ust2009054.jpg http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...ust2009052.jpg http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...ust2009087.jpg http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...ust2009088.jpg http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...ust2009089.jpg |
Too bad about the cage issues. Im surprized you guys didnt make your own. At least the pressure is put off a little on time restraints now that your shooting for the Optima schedule.
Rear tray is turning out nice. |

For Example, The dry sump tank we have discussed with more smarter people then me and they had the idea of put it behind the right front tire in the fire wall, but how would you do that or have access? So we came up with the bring idea of tanking the Peterson Tank and welding the base of the new Air ride Fuel cap to the top of it so the fuel cap sticks out through the outside of the right front fender. It should make people say hay why is that here? Or they may just hate it. It reminds me of Smokey Yunick who filled the oil tank in the passenger seat area. Wait till you see what we do with the Dual Optima Batteries in the back seat. |
Rodger, this is a fun build and it's coming along nicely! Thanks for the update!!
|
Rodger, I keep forgetting this project is geared towards off the shelf parts.
Great idea on the sump tank. Looks great so far. |
Very cool Rodger.
Keep up the great work. |
Well We had to shorten the passenger fender 3/16 of an inch behind the wheel opening to get everything to fit right. You can see the cut line in the sanded away E coating fron the stock fenders that came with the car. So here is where the project is currently at.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...Project019.jpg http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...Project022.jpg The floor was cut out to fit the shifter http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...Project023.jpg Moving right along |
Great project! I like the idea of bolt ons, with just enough fab work that a normal guy like me could do it.
Quick question, out of curiousity, how did you make the recessed areas in the package tray like this? I assume some special bead-roller type deal. http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...ust2009088.jpg |
Your metal work - as always is art! So cool, looks so good.
|
Nothing Special. Just a regular Miltler brothers 36" bead roller with a step die.

Hey Bring those Fontana's to the show I'll put them in our booth and try to get rid of them.
|
Shorten the fender? Do I even want to know why?
|
It is what was needed to get the front end to fit nicely. It fits great now.
Rodger |
Rodger,
Awesome build! Your metalwork is amazing! The 1st time you run silver state, you have to do the school, enter the association and the navigator has to pay for navigator school too! For a first timer, It's a lot of running around trying to keep up with the schedule. One option is to just run the event in a regular car the first time, then you know the ropes and have the schools out of the way and can focus on the car, the next time around. Not saying you can't do it in your Camaro, we did, but you'd better have the car in reliable condition, or it won't be much fun. One guy ran the Optima sponsored 1 mile top speed event the day before, he broke his clutch and was out for Sunday because he had no spare parts. It's best to have a sorted, proven, car there. |
I agree 100% Dave. I was thinking about renting a Vette in Vegas or Running it the shop HHR just for the experience. Until I found out it was going to be about a 1000 bucks. We are just working to make a decent showing in November. This will allow us a few weeks of track test time before the Optima Shootout. Then the real fun comes this winter getting ready for the Autocross events, Silver State Classic in May, possibly the One lap Event with James Shipka, Hot Rod Power Tour, and just having fun with the car in 2010.
I'm pretty excited about the One Lap Event, James told me they are supposed to run Watkins Glen and I love that track. I have been practicing all the East coast Tracks on I racing. Thanks For the kind words, we try pretty hard to do the best quality we know how. |
That die work looks familiar.
|
Yeah but Bead roll patterns are bead roll patterns, Wait till you see the obvious rip off of ideas I warned you about on the phone. I mean heck why do you think I wanted to get that dry sump tank from you.......:D
