Yeah it wouldn't be too bad. I am thinking about just buying a hood and throwing a quick paint job on it and reselling it if too many parts required to get it on the road are missing. What color should I go with? Blue, green or black? The thought of owning a third red car doesn't sit too well with me.
|
Interior? We don't need no stinkin' interior....
Trey -- Without seats and stuff - you're right - it's something to dicker about --- and with no interior - it allows you to kinda go real "pro touring" with it - grab a couple of bucket seats - maybe do a roll bar/cage with 5 point harness etc -- you could go "rat rod Pro tour" and have a whole new genre of car build going!! Make the interior "race car basic" - switches with flip covers - or maybe just toggles... after market gauges in custom simple race car dash... Serious! |

If you get it and decide to keep it long term I think a nice darker metallic blue would look good. Send me your email in a PM and I will show you a really cool factory color. |
Trey -- Don't listen to him ^^^^^^ !! Panther PINK!!!!:woot:
Don't listen to me either ---- I once painted a canoe "Dull Dead Grass Green" - yep! That's the real name of the paint! |
They actually painted one panther pink at the shop I work, I saw it at a car show and it actually looked good! I forgot about plum purple, but yeah I am thinking blue would be good for this. The owner of the place I had my tranny rebuilt has a blue 70 HEMI challenger, it's so cool. It's got a bunch of oddball options like auto on the column and stuff like that.
|
I've seen a couple of yard rotters up here in Snohomish County that would plain old dissapear if they were painted Dead Grass Green.....
Pink, uh it's your car man.... Email sent with pics Trey. |
Man, choosing a color is going to be so hard.. I sent you a few pics of a car that has the perfect color 70rs. I think I need to wait until I get the car first though lol.

Yup, looks great! The color will probably be somewhere between your pics and the one I sent. Now I just have to find some good rims to match it..
All I know is that this car is going to be LOUD, as loud and mean as friggen possible! Like straight headers loud lol. |

I looked at the car today and talked him down to $1400.. The front clip is good, doors are good just surface rust, the trunk lid is good but the trunk floor is bad and the front floors are bad. It looked like quarter skins were put on before and I asked him about it. He said the car was completely restored and ready for paint about 10 years ago and then his uncle went to jail(his car) and I guess it just sat. But guess what the original color was guys. :woot: You guys think I should go for it? It needs ALOT of work, but I think I might be able to handle it, I mean, it's a B5 blue Challenger! http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/8528/1000724o.jpg http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/3061/1000725b.jpg http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/7083/1000726bw.jpg http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/9799/1000727m.jpg http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/1734/1000729b.jpg http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/4613/1000739r.jpg http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/5159/1000744r.jpg http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/4576/1000747.jpg http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/8822/1000749r.jpg http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/9025/1000750.jpg http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/1157/1000753f.jpg http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/7959/1000755y.jpg http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/5015/1000757d.jpg |
My...... I really had to "digest" those photos....
Okay -- I'm trying to watch a show on Speed - and "think" at the same time. What to say here... being positive - and being "practical" - and being helpful in a couple different ways. Great show btw -- "The Beast".... This car - whether you can get it for Free - or for $2000 or somewhere in-between... really the price means nothing - it's the difference between buying something on Ebay and paying 25 Grand for it only to find out you have a bondo wagon... and knowing / seeing what you're taking on. This car - even at $1500 is pretty "cheap" on a purely financial basis... and frankly - you're just not going to get much of ANY car for that kind of money. That being said... it's really more what your budget can stand to fix. That would be my #1 concern - given your age and not really knowing much about YOU - forgetting the car. Do you have the DRIVE... Time... $$$ this project is going to take? Would you learn from it.... is it the kind of car you want to put your hard work and hard earned money into (I think yes - it's the right style/brand/year etc)... But are you willing to be REALISTIC regarding just what you're chewing off here? Do you have a place that this car can be worked on for the next 3 years? Do you - and can you - afford to INVEST in the tools that will be required? Do you have friends/relatives that are willing to help on a moments notice? You're going to need help... helping hands... knowledge... advice... and lots of small hand tools - and a good welder -- and on and on... |
I hope some other guys jump in here...
Here's some thoughts - and I'm going to miss some steps here... Got to get it home Get it stripped down to bare body Build a cart for it Get it blasted to clean metal Assess what panels need to be ordered Lay out a plan of what should be done first While waiting on parts - start bead blasting - cleaning protecting - bagging and labeling small parts to be reused. Ascertain what is NOT there and where to get them. Build a realistic $ budget and time budget Pick up a tool - and start working... |
I agree with Greg on all of the concerns and thoughts about what it will take. If you are confident you can handle the financial and time requirements to do this then I think you should get it. But think it through and be sure of what you are getting into. I think it would be a great learning experience but it will take a lot of commitment on your part. That car has a ton of potential in the right hands. And the B5 blue does look great!
Greg, was it the show on Eric Banon you were watching? That was a great documentary IMO. Right up to where he crashed that Falcon. But at least it is going to be rebuilt. |
Yeah Eric -- the Australian actor guy...
When you go fast - sometimes bad shizzell happens... LOL Personally -- if he (Trey) can handle it - this is the better car of the three that he's shown... there's just not much that beats an E body Mopar IMHO... |

BTW -- Personally -- I have a nice "shed" - lots of tools... lots of time... 1/8th of Charley's money... and looking at a project like this makes me want to hold my breath 'til I turn blue... But at the same time - it makes me want to pick up some square tubing and start bracing so I can cut her all apart and get started...
|
I was going to drop it off and work and blast all the rust areas on the body and then pay the body man to start on it. I was gonna have him sand down and prime the fenders, roof, doors and prime them since they are clean. Then patch the quarters up and paint it. I think it will be about $1000 with the employee discount and single stage paint. The floors are pretty expensive for these cars though, it's surprising.
|
If you get it look at it really close after you blast it. You may need/want to replace some things instead of patching. The real story will unfold after all of the paint is gone and you can see the bare metal. Do not underestimate the amount of work this will take. But with a good build plan you can do this and have a lot of fun. Take your time and do it right, you will be happier in the end knowing it is a solid build. And maybe think about trying some of the body work yourself and learning some new skills, you will also save some money on labor that way.

Yeah -- the parts cost for Mopars is what I mentioned earlier! Twice what the same dang thing runs for a Chevy piece... |
Meh, I don't think I am going to get it. Just going to need too much work plus I am sure it will still be there in a few months when it's time for another car. I found a 72 El Camino though that's in good shape. Personally it's not the greatest looking car but there pretty sweet. I like it because it's all there, runs drives and it has a RADIO. :woot: Also Chevelle part's are abundant right now. It would be a great car to enjoy for a month or two, throw a paint job on, lay some carpet in and re-sell for a profit then move on to something else. I will get some pics tomorrow when I look at it.
Also we were behind a lexus today that had a kick ass blue.. http://chrispoblete.com/gallery/albu...6038.sized.jpg |
That is a nice looking blue there.
Your idea of buying a few here and there to flip is a good idea and a way to save up some money to get a car in better shape when you are ready to build one for yourself. |
Trey -- if it works for YOU... then it's perfect.
In the end - none of us are paying for it - nor working on it - nor enjoying the finished product either... But I am glad that you're THINKING about all of the choices... rather than just rushing out - and then going "WTF" did I do here! |

I guess I could just keep the El Camino and sell it when another car came up. |
Oh ma gawd. I just found a 70 Roadrunner for $500(negotiable)!!! This is hands down my FAVORITE muscle car! I have dreamed of owning one of these. I am calling tomorrow and if it has a title I am picking it up.

^^^^^changes mind like I change my underwear, daily! You're killin' me dude!
i am just joking, if that works and all the things talked about apply then go for it! |
I know lol.. He said someone is coming to pick it up tomorrow but there really far away. I hope they back out so bad.

I went to go look at the Road Runner today.. Holy crap, I only wish you guys could have been there to see how bad it was, pictures and words just can't describe it.. I could pull the rear window out and the whole trunk lid just fell in. The Charger was actually pretty nice and had decent interior. It had the original 440 in it and it was a Special Edition for $500 also. I almost wanna go back for it even though it's an ugly year. But the Road Runner was so cool, just my favorite car of all time. If the trunk lid wasn't so bad I would have bought it and drove it like it was. I'll get some pics up in a minute. |
Guess what the first thing was that I saw when I pulled into work today? A B5 Blue Road Runner. It's like God is playing some cruel joke on me.. :willy: I found a nice 69 Road Runner but it's $800 too much :(

What about waiting to buy another car till you have more money saved up? That way you can start off with a better prospect.
|
Patience is a virtue my little grasshopper....
  I think you're too young to get the funny in that statement... but it sure popped into my mind and I can see Keith Caradine speaking it. |
