Cant wait to see more Russel!
|
Thanks for the interest Mike, My machinist said that he should be able to get the sleeves done this week. It has me TOTALLY stoked. I can't wait to see what this thing looks like with some rollers under it. Plus I'm kind of excited to tackle the process of making the tires.

More photos!

I don't have anything new to post yet. I am unfortunately still waiting on the wheels.
|
alright. With the new computer up and running, it is time to get back on some of these projects I've got going. I've piddled around with this a little bit. All of the lights are mounted, as is the rear bumper and spoiler. I begain work on the intake. I will not be doing the harrop intake that I had planned. Instead I will be going with a sheetmetal type intake. Still no word from my machinist on the wheels.
money shot http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2857.jpg nice back end http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2860.jpg Going for the modern blacked out trim http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2858.jpg Here is where I am at on the intake. I have the main body complete. All it needs is some filler work here and there. I will do one runner and then throw it in the mix to be cast that way each of them is identical, eliminating any problems. I will also make some flanges that will mount to the head. There is no need for a valley cover built into the manifold, as the LSx series has its own. And naturally there will be fuel rails and plenty of plumbing. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2868.jpg |
How about a REAL update??
After some work, and some resin casting, we now have an ALMOST complete intake manifold. I need to source some small button head screws for the top of the manifold (anyone know where to get some? preferably just the heads). I've also got a pair of complete rotors for the front. I'm going to try and source some rotors and calipers from the 1/12th Skyline kit for the rear, so as to not have to completely scratch another set of rotors and calipers. The rotors also are in paint. As is the engine block and heads, as well as a set of 4 wheel centers.....finally. All were painted with model masters metalizers. I had some trouble with my airbrush....seems I have a hole in my airline which I found after I was done spraying, and thought it was a problem with the brush. But I am happy with the result. I am debating on whether to hit the wheel centers with some clear just to make them pop, and give them the powder coated look. (got that tip from Clay Kemp, he used it on his chopper build). And yes, I am STILL waiting on the sleeves. Hopefully tomorrow I can get the engine assembled. I need to add some bolt heads to the valley cover, paint those, and then I can assemble the heads and intake. Then it will be time to get started on the brake calipers. I am leaning toward a one peice BAER unit. Here are the pics, comments and criticisms please! http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2878.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2879.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2880.jpg |

good to see you´re still workin on this one Russell!
I´m sorry you´re not having any luck with the aluminum sleeves, hope your machinist will fix em for ya soon! Intake looks REALLY good, cant wait to see that engine come together. /Freddy |
Freddy,
Looks like I should have waited for you to return. lol. Since I've got about 35 bucks in the stock that I sent my machinst, I'm going to wait for him to finish them. HOPEFULLY SOON!!!!! I can't wait to see this thing with the wheels. Thanks for the comments everyone. I hope to have a good bit of the fuel system finished tomorrow. Injectors rails and a regulator are on the table for work tomorrow. Keep those comments rolling they are the inspiration Russell |
How about updates two days in a row!!! Got the heads mounted, along with some head gaskets. I've spent some time on the intake manifold as well. It now has injectors, wiring and fuel rails. My batteries died before I got a mock up with the intake on the engine, So I'll update again later tonight!
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2886.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2887.jpg |
Final update for the night, and probably the next few days. Got a mock up shot with the intake on the block. Also a poor photo of the FPR (fuel pressure regulator) The adjuster is on top, the connectors on both sides will go to the fuel rails, and the one on the bottom will be for the main fuel line. here is how the plumbing will go. The fuel rails will be plumbed with incoming fuel and return lines to the tank. The intake will be plumbed with a line to the FPR making it boost dependent, a line for a pressure guage, and a line going to the waste gates. I think I'm going to have to restock my plastic round and hex rod, picking up some different sizes that what I have on hand. Up next I will begin the work on the brake calipers for the front brakes....should be fun.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2889.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2890.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2891.jpg |
alright, an early morning update. Here is a picture of the Brake calipers I am modelling along with a picture of where I am at. They are Baer 6S monoblock calipers. 6 pistons of clamping power!!
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2012/6S-6R.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2896.jpg The plan is as follows. I'll master one peice. And make 4 copies and then create the rest of the caliper. |
alright. Here is the "finished" Caliper. I feel it is a tad small but I am happy with it. I wanted to get some pictures up before I buried it in RTV. Here will be the process. I'll make a mold and cast 6 or 8 of these little buggers. Then I will go in and create the complete calipers with the fittings and pads and what have you. Also on a much more uplifting note!!! I heard from my machinist and found out what is taking so long to get the wheels done. We had a slight mis understanding. When I sent my drawings and my mock up I also sent a picture much similar to this
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...012/Sema_8.jpg And I told him this is the wheel I am trying to replicate. Well, All I was looking for were some sleeves to insert my wheel centers into. He cut the WHOLE wheel. My girlfriend is bringing a pair of them home tonight for me to inspect and make sure that I like. So apparently this thing will be riding of fully CNC Machined aluminum wheels! total greatness!!!! Here is the caliper http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2899.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2900.jpg |
here are the pics of the wheels. I'll have some up of the brake calipers in a bit.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2906.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2907.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2908.jpg |
and here is a completed caliper. Along with a brake pad
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2912.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2913.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2914.jpg |
Worked a little bit on this tonight. I've been feeling a little BLAH. I'm hoping to get the rest of my supplies ordered in the next week. Waiting on some dimensions from various sources. I started on a Rack and pinion steering unit, as well as the front crossmember for the engine.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2944.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2947.jpg |
That's too cool. Talk about tedious work!
|
Finally something to report on this car. I finally got back to work on it a little bit. I've also been trying to hammer out the order from RB motion for the A/N fittings, rod ends, valve stems, and spark plugs. I took a spare head cast that I had and drilled it for the brass rod I am using for the turbo headers. Brass was chosen because of the following reasons:
1. I like bending it much better than I do plastic. 2. It can be soldered together for a much stronger joint (IMHO) 3. I didn't trust just plastic to support the weight of the resin turbo's and piping that will be hanging off of them. The first 3 photos are of the scale piece, the last is of the 1:1 I am using for reference. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2985.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2986.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF2987.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DVC00878.jpg |
Any more progress on this?
|
wow, I could never do that with my two daughters running around.. they'd destroy those!
Great work  |
thanks for the comments guys. No progress right now. Funding ran out before I could get my machined goodies and braided line. I have taken a break from the hobby for a while. I've had to stay on top of my studies. Hopefully I'll make some head way this winter.
|
I am going to be hitting the drawing board again, for the wheels and tires. This time I am going to start with the tires, and then move to the wheels. I've been talking to a machinist who works almost completely in scale parts. He says that this is the way to tackle it. So I am looking for suggestions on wheel/tire combo's. If this were a real world car. It would have a TT LS7 so we are talking close to 1000 at the wheels. I want something that is going to look good and be able to hold the power. My original wheels called for 11" wheels out back and 8.5" up front. Maybe a 18/19 combo. Suggestions with pictures would be great. I want this build to be as realistic as possible.
|
Are you sticking with the original wheel design or are you going with another? It's going to get a lot of attention once it's done.
|
I have yet to decide. I like the colored center. I am open to suggestions. Just be sure to provide some eye candy to back it up!
|
Well, I've started getting back into it. Decided to change the wheels up. they are forgeline WC3p's
The are smaller than the other wheels I had designed. I'll show some pictures of where I am at with the wheels in just a bit. they will start out as a multi piece design at first to ensure symmetry in the spokes. then the resin "spokes" will be attached to the outer ring, and the center, then I will drill the holes for the bolts for the the center. The master will be sent out so sleeves can be machined. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...%2012/wc3p.jpg |
Wicked headers! ;)
|
I also like the wheel choice!!
|
yeah...can't remember where I got those pics from :_paranoid I'm not happy with them...or the motor anymore...there will be a lot of revamping on this thing.
|
Yeeeah! Those wheels will go nicely, especially if they're detailed well. Maybe a brushed, medium gray/gunmetal center would set the exterior color off and go with the grill. Just my thoughts though.
|
well here is where I am at. I am waiting for a bit, so I have several items to make molds of at once before I start pouring the RTV. you can see the outter ring and the spoke that will be copied so that they are all exactly alike
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...version005.jpg |
Not much to update here. I decided to go ahead and mold and cast the LSx for resale. Hopefully that will help raise some funds for this thing. With the spring semester in full swing, and taking 6 classes to graduate, Time is slim. I need to rebuild the LS7 oil pan, and am seriously considering re-working the heads, since I am planning on selling this beast. This time around there will more than likely be separate head and valve cover, probably something like the valve covers Steve used on penny.Hopefully I'll have some time to work on this thing over spring break, I have the week off and don't plan on going anywhere
|
back from the dead. Talking to Danny there I got the urge to get some work done on this guy, that way I'd have something to show at the Showdown in March. I've got the oil pan roughed out...correctly this time. I found some nice reference shots. It now has the indention for the oil filter, which will accomodate the filter from the '69 kit. All that is left is to finish the kickout for the filter (modifications will be needed on the block upon arrival for any buyers), build the bottom of the pan, and construct the black for the feed and return lines for the oil system. I am unsure about the bolts as of yet, Not sure If I want to leave that up to customers to add or not. Pics are in the gallery

I am dying to see your model finished, I am impressed!
I have the same model,I took the lights and wheels/tires from an ebay rc car. I used acetate to make the glass a little thinner and sprayed base coat and clearcoat, wet sanded with 12000 paper If you ever make a set of torq thrust style rims in this scale I would be your first customer. |
Awww man! Vanzuuk, I hadn't seen your Camaro (over on P-T) since you added those wheels on it. Looks VERY good! If ya ever wanna put together one for me, I won't mind. Either of you for that matter.:thumbsup:
|
Thanks. Do you mean the wheels on the full size car or the model?
They take a ridiculous amount of time so I dont build them for other people any more. The easiest way to end up with a model of your car is to get a 1/18th diecast from gmp and modify it. The plastic kits are a lot of work to finish nicely, the diecasts are more beginner friendly. |
I actually hadn't seen EITHER with the different wheels on it. Or at least I didn't recognize the models wheels. It's been awhile since I saw the model though too. I also, Coincidentally saw your car on a wheel website this morning too. Hahaha, odd. They both look outstanding though.
|
Finally some work on this beast. I'm getting back into the swing of modeling. Now that school is over. I have got the head just about how I want it. The back side is gonna be revell style. No detail, just flat, when the intake is all mated up you wont really be able to tell once it is detailed out. I need to find all of my tools and drill bits and drill out the holes for the spark plugs. I filled the gap between the head bolt holes with Tamiya 2 part epoxy putty. Then pressed in the RB Motion spark plugs. Let it cure then cleaned it up. As far as the heads go, the spark plug holes need drilled, and the putty work needs cleaned up and they are done. Make the valve covers, and the bulk of the engine is complete. I've sourced a junk coil, all I have to do is get with the guy to pick it up. Make the coils, finish off the oil pan, and the miscellaneous sensors and it will be complete. I'll be sending it to a friend over seas to have the intake made. If there is anyone here capable of small scale machining, please contact me, I've got some projects I'd like to see about farming out.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/DSCF4908.jpg |
I'll try and get some 360 shots of the heads, and some good detail shots of the spark plugs tomorrow
|
that's a badass '69
that looks sweet!!!!can't wait to see the end result of the wheels and when you put them on the car. i have to get one of these kits for myself.
this is what i started working on last night. http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/HPIM1073.jpg keep us posted on your project!!! |
