Don't forget to stop by Posie's once in a while to see his stuff.

Past projects:

Ken had a nice statement on his truck - Maybe Rodger should paint a little statement on the bottom of his too... seemed appropriate

Backstory from Hot Rod Jan 05:

He Makes Us All Look Like Chumps
Sometimes all you can do is shake your head in stunned admiration when you see a project like Jim Dunham's scratch-built Mark I GT40 replica. A Ford vehicle-packaging engineer by day, Jim has been at work since 1997 handbuilding an exact duplicate of Ford's legendary supercar in his garage from the ground up. "I decided to build one for myself from scratch since I sure could never afford to buy an original," he says. After measuring four original GT40s and gaining access to another chassis that was under restoration, Jim drew up his own full-scale plans using CAD software, built wooden body bucks, and began forming the monocoque body tub, which is now about 90 percent complete, from sheetmetal just like the originals. He's also building the running gear and body panels in his home garage, including handforming the roof and other body panels using a hammer and dolly and an English wheel. "I try to tell guys anyone can do this; it's not tough," Jim says. Jim hopes to have the car running with a mechanically injected small-block Ford by next year and he intends to run it in open-track and vintage racing events. Unbelievable.

A lot of the processes and jig stuff is the same with metal as it is with other materials - so I like to look at bunches of sites that can inspire and be cross utilized. (plus I like woodworking too) Here's a couple to cruze !

Jim is this a Porsche buddy of yours. I believe I counted 6 Porsche in the garage at one stage or done, surrounding the crown jewel GT40 build.

I met joe harmon several years back. He definitely walks to a different drummer. I saw the CAD models for this project back when they were a student engineering project, long before they went public and took on a life of its own. His knowledge of exotic wood species is unreal, and the length they are going to in making 98% of this car out of wood and functional is even crazier. tires, glass, instruments, and basic engine is pretty much the only thin that will not be wood.

Garage Dog 65 01-15-2010 12:22 PM

check out some of the nice touches on the Hemirod. And the color combos and finish choices on the engine and chassis too.

Steves Auto Restorations painted my 67 Vette (Ermine White) years ago... My buddy owns it now -- it has 34K ORIGINAL miles on it... but the point is... the body blocking is flawless - and so is the paint - and that was 20 years ago!

They do phenomenal work!

Bring a boat load of cash....

They do great work but like you said bring a boat load of cash and have a boat load in reserve just incase.

Here is the car that Tim started and is currently finishing.

Tim went back to work for SAR? I was unaware of that.

I think any shop that gets paid for "ALL" the hours they have in the car is going to charge a boat load. This line of work is not the smartest business plan unless you can do that.

Quality work is not cheap and Cheap work is not good.

He went back on a part time contract basis. He isn't an employee. Steve needed some real talent to get $hit done I guess. Tim left on good terms so...

Got bored today and was flipping through the March issue of Hot Rod Magazine when I stumbled upon the '70 Mustang "Trans-Cammer." I remember being blown away at SEMA, as I'm sure many of you were. Anyway, I decided to google it because I haven't seen much info on the car around here, maybe a couple shots from SEMA or the Ultimate Street Car Challenge, but nothing I hadn't seen in person. Let me just say, the owner/builder needs a plate holder that reads, "proud to be awesome," because what lies under the skin on this car is simply amazing. It is clean, purposeful, and intricately detailed to a level that instantly puts almost everything else out there to shame.

Finished shots start at the top of the first page, but click through all the pages because the thread is in the process of being update with more build pics

That hot rod looks SO bad ass...I just wish they'd have done something more with the stock gas tank. It looks funny hanging out there in the wind like that.

If Busby is involved, it'll be fast. LOVE the brakes!

preston 02-01-2010 01:49 PM

As beautiful and well fabricated as that rig is, I still have a hard time reconciling "race chassis" and the front end horse buggy suspension. Its kind of messing with my head actually - triangulated Nascar/GT style front end space frame, with radius arms, CF brakes and a deadmans axle.

The stock fuel tank had a fuel cell with bladder inside the original sheetmetal. It was bad ass.

This would be so fun for a daily driver.

Back to the top for this one. Any updates from anyone?

A little while ago I found a post on either this or another forum of a young guys Tig welding that was just outstanding. I have never seen anything like it. I also remember there were pics of a mini truck he was building with his brother. I have been searching the forum and cant find it anywhere. Does anyone remember this or have a link to it????

I couldn't not respond to this thread! You guys have covered a lot of the cars that have inspired me (ie. Terrible Herbst Trophy Trucks, Robby Gordon's Hummer, Brunning Auto, Rad Rod by Troy...etc etc). I started out interested in the off-road stuff and in university I designed and built a custom off-road race car ...er go kart from scratch. I spent many hours studying class 1 cars and trophy trucks on Race Dezert!

Now I work for an off-road racing transaxle company (Weddle Industries). Someone posted Robby Gordon's Hummer wondering what it started out as. That's a custom tube frame race car with a hummer body (carbon fiber of course) on top, it's basically a class 1 buggy. We sold him the transaxle that it uses and do all the prep work/rebuilds on the trans.

Lots of cars and shops on here inspire me: Gonzo, Ironworks, Penny, Payback, BentFab, Built by Brooks, Bill Amsley, Fesler....
Good on ya!
-Dave

ps. hey, my first post! I almost went a year just lurking!

ironworks 02-25-2010 02:02 PM

Not really sure how it will perform, but it sure looks amazing. For a square tube stainless steel hydro powered rock buggy.

Who doesn't love the engineering and build craftsmanship from Tim Divers.

Ferrambo is just amazing stuff.

Jim -

Timmy Diver does amazing fab work! His brother does all the interiors.... I go up there all the time just to get a "fab fix". A buddies son works there. They're great guys.

Garage Dog 65 02-26-2010 10:07 AM

And I love the out-in-the-weeds farm look of the facility - then to see the stuff rolling outta there kills me.

Wish I had someplace like that close, but I'd be there all the time !

Have you been to Rod Emory's place ? They do porsche stuff - but there are some nice pieces coming from them too. In your neck of the woods ?

http://www.emorymotorsports.com/

Check the Workshop and the Outlaws pages.

GregWeld 02-26-2010 10:19 AM

Jim -- Never been to Emorys shop. It's not far from Portland (where I was born and have relatives etc) so maybe I'll check it out next time I'm down there.

BTW -- the "barns" at Divers are anything but... they have full on fab shops going there -- and paint etc... as well as clean room... And YES it's in the sticks - with beautiful views - and the travel time from home to work is "minimal".

ironworks 02-26-2010 10:29 AM

Greg - How far out of town are they? How far do the employees have to commute to work? I always wanted a big shop out in the sticks. Have a Guest house for customers and and Go kart for Saturday night show downs.

Someday......

Rodger

Garage Dog 65 02-26-2010 10:31 AM

End of June might be a good time to visit. They have a campout and swap - plus they do an open house in the shops. And a BBQ cookoff too !!! Yum !

Rodger -- I live about 50 minutes from their shop... it would be closer but, of course, it's out on 2 lane roads and you can't just clip out there at 75... They're like 40 miles from me.

Nick lives probably a 35 minute drive.... I don't know where the other guys live.

Neither of these drives (mine or Nicks) to their shop would be the kind of nasty stop and go urban traffic that we all hate. It's back roads, and secondary state hiways... and it's PRETTY out that way. I can't imagine anyone complaining about getting "out of town" to go to work. Nick is young - mid 20's and gets to work with some of the best minds in the business... what's to complain about!

Timmy has 25 acres - horses - few neighbors - and a beautiful place... He only works on stuff he wants to do - and has a waiting list to get a car built by them. What a life.

Thomo5150 04-02-2010 07:07 AM

The guy next door has built a few cars in his garage in the last 25 years. The welding on the cars are a work off art, and with the speed they do, you need a good fabricator/ welder.
