Had to be a different car. I'm there now, and took a second look: the DSE Camaro has pretty nice panel fit and gaps. Actually, it's a testament to the chassis because the rear (door) gaps are just about show car tight, and there is no post-track-abuse chipping. ;)
The 54 really should have at least been in that row (SMOY 5) today. If it wasn't here, Thrillbilly... As for the Rad Rides 87, you have to see it to really appreciate it. In the words of a very experienced car guy (paraphrased), "it's right on the edge, but so far-so good." The only thing that bothers me about it (like I really matter) is the glass to metal ratio. If I were the owner I would go all the way for custom glass and tell Troy to start cutting on that roof. :). If he goes with his usual subdued finishing style, to balance the radical metal work, that could be a badass hot rod. A dark color would blend it all in, and let you see something new every time you look. Then, you start to realize why it's so sweet. |
Some very nice looking cars there!!! VERY NICE!! It would be hard for me to pick a winner, that's for sure.:willy:
Thanks for posting the pics!! |
Maybe its just me, and I have only seen the thing in pictures, but the '54 Vette does absolutely nothing for me. It appears to have no presence. Like I said, I have only seen it in pictures and have not seen it in person. That thought might change if I was standing in front of it, but it doesn't look like it has any attitude. I think it might have something to do with it not having any trim that shines. Just my opinion...and thats all it is.

Im seeing a lot of dark cars with dark wheels..I like that look :unibrow:
anyone know the color of the vette with the zr1 motor? |
I'm exhausted. I walk back and forth from the manufacturer's area to the awards & swap meet area the whole weekend. Last year I did it for three days; only two this year, but I traveled back and forth a lot more. I look at the cars, go back and look at stuff and compare with vendor items and cars. etc. Then I walk all the way back to my car each day for lunch - usually need some peace and quiet (relatively) to relax and let all my mental notes sink in...

Look like you had great weather, next year I hope to stay until Sunday. That copper and champayne rod is incredible.

Saturday's crowd around the big guns. I give these guys credit for having their very expensive toys out in the playground, and so easily accessible. All my pics are taken from safe camera distances, so interior and engine shots are a little compromised. I just shake my head when I see people poking themselves and their cameras in and over these cars. :( Of course they don't plan to slip and fall, or drop their sometimes expensive cameras, but **** happens and they don't realize what it would take to repair the damage. One a-hole who doesn't see the a-hole hovering over paint with a camera, bump, crash, bang, scratch , dent...

In my "Humble" opinion.......this is the kind of thing that killed a lot of interest in the Street Rodding area years ago as a lot of very talented people were so concerned with doing something different......that the builds became "Silly".....just to be different.......just my $.02 Classic styling done correctly......"Always" looks good......... I was just offering my opinion.........Thanks for posting all the pic's ken |
I followed the build thread of the green and white Ford pickup on the H.A.M.B.
pretty amazing, the entire pickup was hand made from aluminum!! I admire the skill there!!! the silver built from scratch hot rod with the crazy rotors was awe inspiring. I over heard one of the builders say they had over 7000 hours in building the car. custom intake all from scratch, just a chunk of aluminum, rims, etc/ if I hear him correctly they made everything except the tires, caddy north star block, and 700r4 trans... to have the toys, and know how to use them, yes.... thats my dream:D |

A note about the pics: I don't know how many of the 200 I posted so far, but they're all the best ones. I take pics to study what's going on in the industry, so a lot of times I have redundancies - just slight angle changes to see something else in parts, etc. I tried to pick the ones that showed the cars best, and help those who weren't there see what we saw. More to come and I have some video of them at the ceremony. |
The silver Rod was hand built by Rob Ida. His shop is about 40 mins north of ours. Rob is incredibly talanted and a friend. I had the pleasure of seeing that car in person in several stages of the build. Truely one piece of art.
|
Absolutely insane craftsmanship. The only unfortunate variable for me is they are just art. That's what I love about the Roadser Shop vette and the DSE cars. They are killer rides that get driven HARD. The Ringbrothers look like they knocked another one out of the park.
|
I would put Poteet's truck at the very top for the entire show. It is insane at all the details that was put into the truck. 80% was hand fabricated and most of it looks like polished and plated vintage parts. I was speechless trying to take it all in.
Afterburner is just as wicked as when I saw it at SEMA, and still found things on it I did not see the frst time. That pink Mustang makes me think about Trepanier's "Bomungus" (sp?) every time I see it. The 54 vette was very well built, but very sutble in changes. I don't know what held it out of the top 5, but I would have put it in there Mannings car is awesome, then again all DSE cars are top notch. Anti-bling is where it is at, simple. I think Rupp started it all when he sold his pansy blue 69 and bought Penny. That is my story and I am sticking too it. :_paranoid |

Well were home and are sunburned and exhausted to say the least. There seem to be a good turn out considering the rain we got most of the day friday. The Dse built 69 camaro,54 corvette,Ringbrothers fairlane, and Poteet's pickup and his 300 post chevelle were a few of my favorite's. The top 5 always seems to be a matter of debate but Roger Burman built car that won had some serious body mods and they made it a masterpiece. It was great to see old friends and great to make some new ones. Thanks to all who stopped and checked out Paul's blue chevy II and said hi, it sure has done a 180 from what it was a few years ago when it was orange.Hope everyone has a safe trip home. Joe.

Were you in a chopper?! :D
I forgot to mentioned Marty's truck. It was great to finally see it after watching the build online the last few years. Very nice Marty - congrats! |

How is it that silver street rod did not make Top 5? Or win for that matter?

He had a trick Challenger a few years back that was at SEMA that should have been top 5 SMOY back then too. |
I had to just sum it up as politics, and write the whole issue off, to not let it spoil the weekend. Even though I have nothing to do with it, it's frustrating when this happens. Some people don't like the fact that someone is picking apart and judging the cars, but that's what they were built for (in part). They would never have entered the competition if they weren't aware of, and prepared for, that. It's kind of sad though when who you are and who you know means more than what you accomplished with the vehicle. But that's the way of the world (especially in America) - love it or leave it. It's been that way for a long time, and isn't showing any signs of changing.
A new player planning to compete in the future would be well-advised to start rubbing elbows in the right circles, alongside the actual building, eh? |
The 54 corvette was really neat, but for what it is worth, it just didn't bring it. The dark color did not help the look of the car and the blacked out wheels just got lost in the wheel wells. It was an engineering feet to get the drive train in the car for sure, but compared to the work on the other top 5's there is no comparison. The thing that I was surprised about is that it had autometer gauges in it. (not a slam on them or anybody using them) With all the aftermarket gauge companies that can do trick one off stuff, why not?
With that being said, it is a super trick car, probably a blast to drive and the builder did a fabulous job. Darren |

Speaking of who you are and who you know, the SROY winner came to the game with a stacked deck. Badass car, with a storybook list of people involved in the build, owned by a well-renowned industry figure.
