Tell me about it! Still have mini-tubs, headers a few other parts coming too :willy:

scherp69 07-29-2011 12:03 PM

Car looks amazing Max. I have the Speed Tech subframe for mine also. Such a nice piece. I debated about cutting out my g-bar and getting their torque arm. Just couldn't justify it, so I'll just drool over pics of yours :D Can't wait to see more updates.

Roberts68 07-29-2011 12:42 PM

Your list of "needs" grows shorter by the shipment.

She's gonna be pretty awesome that's for sure.

Looks like you are only about a rear end away from being a roller again already!

Damn right! Just need to get the mini-tubs put in and measured for a rear-end :)

MaxHarvard 08-01-2011 08:04 AM

Couldn't wait to mock up the massive 14" rotors.

Looks so damned cool!

Got a message from Mast that my motor is being put on the dyno today, so that's also awesome.

Teaser shot :D

Now there is a hint of artistry!

Cool effect, not your everyday build thread content there.

What? You don't have centerless wheels too? Thought that was the all the rage these days :unibrow:

Bet those are pretty sweet.... Sounds like the previous owner really loved them and barely put any miles on them he loved them so much :D

MaxHarvard 08-05-2011 06:26 AM

Just got the email from Mast about my motor.

Looks like 592hp and 505tq. All this with 105* air temps. So, I'm guessing on an average Minnesota 85* day, we will easily hit 600hp, which was my goal all along! :)

The graphs are a bit hard to read because the stock LS3 intake and Holley intake colors are the same, but overall the holley intake made more peak HP but less torque, which is what Holley said would happen.

All in all it should be a good screamer at 7k! :D

68400BIRD 08-05-2011 06:41 AM

I call first ride after the motor is in:D

Frankenstine 08-05-2011 07:55 AM

Nice

600 hp on a cooler day that is sweet, so rear wheel hp will be in the uper 400 hp range?? Im thinking goin with a 416 myself when i get started, just wondering if I could build the motor myself along with some skilled friends on the cheap, Those crate motors are pricey.

70rs 08-05-2011 08:00 AM

That looks like a pretty nice torque curve. Over 400lb ft before 3000 rpm. And it just climbs from there. That should be a total riot on the street!

Oh yea, can't wait for that. Although my last motor had roughly 400ft lbs around 3000 rpm's too... the HP jump is what I can't wait for :unibrow:

MaxHarvard 08-08-2011 08:36 AM

My mini-tub project has started. This feels like a lot more work than it really should be.

Taking the brackets off. GM welder didn't really seem to have any rhyme or reason to where he welded LOL

Inner wheel well

Remember the Sawzall I bought for this project? TOTALLY WORTH IT!! Zipped right through this junk.
http://www.impermanence.kungphu.com/...3-_em22983.jpg

Looks like some jack-a-nape decided not to replace the rust... just cover it up. Just lovely. Ugh.

Found this guy hiding between the door and the inner cover... petrified little bugger, and not just scared... literally hard as a stone LOL. I thought long and hard about scaring the wife with it, but thought better of it and just threw him away.

Sorry to see the rust in there.

Toss the hitch hiker....no free rides!

rwhite692 08-08-2011 10:25 AM

Looks great, man. Minitubbing a first gen is indeed, a crapload of work.

Boy that little mouse looks remarkably well preserved, LOL!

The rust isn't all that bad... just about an inch that I'll be cutting out anyways, just sucks to see such a crap repair.

So far I've got about 4 hours into it. That's just one side :faint:

MaxHarvard 08-11-2011 09:15 AM

No massive update today, haven't had much "loud time" with the air tools because my 1 year old needs to sleep so I have to do this in whatever free time I have... not fun.

Taking stuff off a little bit at a time, making sure to cut a little short. I don't have the mini-tubs here yet, so I can't mock it up before making my close out pieces for the frame.
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6208/...a01535ae2d.jpg

Getting there! No turning back now... frame has been cut and the junk metal has been scrapped.

Rybar 08-11-2011 12:08 PM

Like I said in the other thread, alot of stock tubs hitting the trash cans lately

Nice work Max, cant imagine doing that work with your 1 yr old trying to sleep through it. :D

Yea, it typically doesn't go so well... Thankfully I'm almost to the "quiet" part of this side, the welding.

People kept telling me it would take 40-80 hours to do this, so far I think i've got roughly 7 hours into it. It's no where near done for this side and I think I probably did at least 5 hours researching photos and videos.

We shall see :)

sweetstang68347 08-11-2011 02:37 PM

Props for doing all this on your own. I would be terrified to do that to my car. I wouldn't have a problem if my motor was spread all across the shop floor but metal work terrifies me! :omg:

The best part about doing metal work is that you can always add it back on :D

MaxHarvard 08-17-2011 05:51 AM

Motor is here!!

So far very impressed with this motor, looks great, wiring harness looks well prepped and it was crated well despite being hit with a forklift at FedEx! LOL

Man that must get you motivated, good luck with the one year old and free time  I had to put mine on hold for a couple of years because of my twins, but I wouldn't trade them for anything. Love what you are doing with this part 2 of your build Max.

waynieZ 08-17-2011 09:09 AM

Thats sweet! Thats going to a great power plant.

rwhite692 08-17-2011 01:39 PM

Man that MAST motor looks great, all business!

That intake looks pretty tall, will it clear the hood?

I've been told it will clear with a cowl hood. :)

How is everything going so far?

So far so good.... Almost half done with the mini tubs... collecting parts at this point. Going to be putting it together and hopefully get it on 4 wheels before the snow flies. That's the goal, to have a roller by winter.

MaxHarvard 08-22-2011 09:44 AM

Hey hey!

One side is in! just needs seem sealer and some under coating. :)

Will be using Transtar undercoating, works a lot better and more durable than that rubberized crap.

I asked a friend of mine about doing Line-X on the car, and for what the "friend" rate would be, its just too far out of the budget right now.

He suggest this stuff I posted, Transtar coating... stuff is like $15 a can, but he showed me some 5-7 year old stuff they use on a trailer and it held up really well. Sorta looks like wrinkle paint when all said and done.

MaxHarvard 08-24-2011 07:50 AM

Thanks guys! Can't wait to get it done!!

Here's the latest update.

Got the milled finish speedtech headers yesterday. I like this finish honestly because it reminds me of Indian Larry... He was such a neat guy and had a great way of thinking about machines that I think he'd like this finish.

http://www.impermanence.kungphu.com/...5-_em23028.jpg

Got a little bored of the standard photos, so these next 3 have some creative licensing LOL

http://www.impermanence.kungphu.com/...6-_em23029.jpg

I have a new inspector/spokesman at the shop, Max has to make sure to inspect each part for quality before it goes into the car. :D

http://www.impermanence.kungphu.com/...7-_em23030.jpg

I think he's happy with the craftsmanship LOL
http://www.impermanence.kungphu.com/...8-_em23037.jpg

68400BIRD 08-24-2011 10:30 AM

SWEET!!! Are you getting the headers coated? If not make sure to wipe off all of the fingerprints before start up. I had a set of chrome Doug Thorleys on my last car. After running the car for a few weeks I had small little blue blotches from the oil off of my fingers.
