Great work, that looks awesome.

Nice Work it looks great.

rickpaw 06-17-2014 06:20 AM

The paint looks great.

sleepertime 06-17-2014 07:35 AM

paint...

Thanks to all for the compliments. Its amazing what passion will drive you to do.
One of the things that I have been able to figure out is that I need to be spraying the white sealer over the gray primer before spraying the velocity yellow. The yellow does not cover real well. So far being able to spray the bottom and then the firewall has sharpened up my skills, after twenty four years they have gotten a little rusty, but it's coming back.
I went ahead and cut and buffed the firewall as a good spot for the practice for the rest of the car.

sleepertime 07-13-2014 09:37 PM

Now moving back to the interior work...

Here are my latest updates. I moved back to the interior I chose to go with the LizardSkin Sound Control & LizardSkin Ceramic Insulation in the dash, firewall, floor and quarters and plan on spraying UPOL liner in the trunk.

I don't understand.... are you using the UPOL instead of sound deadener??

Looks fantastic by the way! And nice prep work (taping and paper etc) too!

sleepertime 07-13-2014 10:13 PM

Thanks for noticing the effort...

The places where I am spraying the UPOL liner are the trunk floor and the rear outer tub and the front fender well areas for durability reasons.

The documentation for the Lizard skin says that it is not as durable a product as is the UPOL liner.

The rest of the areas are the two different parts of the lizardskin, first layer is the Sound control, then the Ceramic for the temp control.

By the way this is my first time using these products, so we will see.....

You're doing a great job! What's the long slit in the tranny tunnel, eBrake?

sleepertime 07-14-2014 08:29 AM

Thanks for the compliment. It is definitely a labor of love...

:superhack:

The two different slits in the tunnel are necessary for the ebrake handle and the back one is for the cable. I am going to be using a console and ebrake assembly from a 2002 Camaro. The front opening allows me to slide the base of the handle assembly thru with a thin spacer above it to allow the correct height for the console placement.

Cool project

I do like the project and I envy you for having kept the car so many years. I still regret selling the '68 I had as a kid. Had a question about the Lizard Skin, is the grey coating the Ceramic and the black the Sound Deadener? I ask because I have the same planned for my build and wanted to know. I hope that you are saving money over the mat type deadeners.

Best wishes on a successful completion.

Rod

Lizard skin application...

Easy way to remember is that it is black and white.
Black container is the sound control, the white container is the ceramic temp control.
Both products spray out about the same color. The black is sprayed first.

UPOL Raptor liner application in the trunk area...

Mark another thing off of the to do list.

I spayed the UPOL Raptor liner in the trunk area.

I really like the way it turned out. It should be plenty functional...

Great preparation for a cool project

If possible, can you PM me the approx. cost of doing the Lizard Skin. Working on my planned build and doing a cost estimation before starting and would like to plug in numbers for doing the Lizard Skin like you did. I talked with the paint manager of the series "Wrecks to Riches" about the product and he was very enthusiastic about the product. Said that it worked better for them (and faster) than the mat deadener and he'd do it again in a minute. Just want to know a ball park number, not an exact figure. One suggestion that I was told was to also apply the ceramic to the underside of the car where the exhaust pipes were to be routed to further reduce heat transfer through the floor/trunk.

Thanks,
Rod

Moving on with progress...

After much internal debate I decided to spray the jamb area's around the hinges before paint so that I would insure the best possible coverage.
I used the reduced epoxy primer (PPG DP48LF) as a sealer before the color.

It's a lot of work and probably overkill but oh well...

Wow, that's a bright yellow. Makes a statement. I have zero body skills so watching this portion intently to learn what I can. Did your door hinges need rebuilding? Curious as most of the '69's I'm looking at have really tired hinges that need rebuilding. Looks to me like you are making good steady progress. Will be tracking this as I really want to see how this all turns out in the end. I love watching builds where the person spends time on the foundation before adding the go fast or bling parts. I think the car ends up being one that's been built to last.

That's the way to go imo. I bought repro uppers and could not get the door to align right. Rebuild the stock and it lined up quickly.

The car has come a long way, looking great!!! Question; I see you painted the hinges separate from the body ... how do you align the hinges after paint? Did you mark the location with drilled pins?

Just asking cuz I'm right behind you!

Michael

sleepertime 08-03-2014 08:17 AM

:lostmarbles:

I was going to try the drilling before I did the paint work, but the amount of adjustment that is available on the first gens is crazy. Imagine it as working in 4D.
We ended up taking the hinges off and putting them back on a number of times and figured out that it does not take but a very small amount of movement to throw everything off. So I didn't feel like drilling a few small alignment holes was going to be very beneficial for my situation.
In the end I felt better about understanding what adjustments were necessary to move door to the right place. I found that by using a regular pencil and marking around the hinges that I could get everything in position.
This is why I chose to shoot thru out the area and then reshoot again after the doors are on, and then clear.

Woo Hoo... Moving along, I was able to get the doors on and then I started wet sanding in preparation of paint.

Two days later, masking up and ready for sealer, paint and clear...

Paint looks good. This must be an exciting time for you putting down some color. The car is bright enough I'll be able to see it from California, LOL. Really good looking yellow. Nothing bashful about it, which is good given it's going to be an awesome car when you are done. Liked the sign a lot. God strengthens all believers when they have faith.

Keep up the good work.

Is this your first time painting a car?

sleepertime 08-06-2014 01:35 PM

:thankyou:

Hey guys thanks for the compliments.
It's been twenty four years since I have done any paint or primer work. I left the paint and body shop business to work a career in the petrochemical industry in operations.
I still have all of my old spray guns and equipment but I ended up buying new HVLP guns.
They seem to be way more efficient with the materials.
I started out pretty rusty at the technique but it's coming back with practice.

You know watching this stuff being done on TV or the internet makes it look like it is so quick and easy, but the reality is that it very labor intensive especially when I am doing all the work myself out in my shop.
