Oh yeah buddy! Here's a second post of a shortened video with A LOT better line, and speeds... from the second day. I'm running Yellow group (Novice) and the first two laps are warm up.... Figure 2:30ish per lap so faster laps (2:15's Charley said) start at 5 minutes into this video if you want to just forward to that point. GPS data is missing from this video because of posting it to YouTube instead of the Contour website... I have yet to figure out how to shorten (edit) the video before posting to the Contour site so chose the YouTube format because this video had 15 minutes of sitting in the staging lane!). Final laps showed top speeds of 112 to as high as 117 going into turns 1 and 14. CHARLEY -- Note the corrected moniker! |
Great videos Greg, looks like a lot of fun!
|
That is the track we need to have a Pro-Touring event at. Great track for a novice to get their feet wet. Watch the video and see all the runoff room if you do something stupid.
|
Greg, that Bondurant school paid off eh? Not too shabby out there... great improvement. Musta felt great!

Spring Mountain is more track time - but less "learning". Also less $$ but you get what you pay for. IMHO -- ANYONE wanting to drive this stuff -- should spend less on parts and more on lessons.... THEN buy parts... I SUCK.... but I can and will get better. That is the fun of it. RE: Improvement #1 had to learn Jerico tranny #2 had to remember to breathe #3 had to remember to think #4 had to remember to LOOK AHEAD #5 had to SLOW DOWN to drive faster #6 remember to bring extra shorts #7 remember to not let Charley see you screw up.... :woot: |
Looking good, should've bought a real car. A Camaro of course.
|
Greg, looks like you had some fun, that is the important thing. Was going to try and get up there to see you, but unfortunately didnt make it.
Congrats on your purchase. |

Sorry I couldn't work out having dinner with you and Laura... the timing just didn't fit this time. The '32 is at Brizios -- so unless I talk Charley into fetching it for me --- I'll have to come back down "shortly". |
trailer tires seem to do that to you when you least expect it....oh and remember when charley tells you to "go out and hit the pace car" shake your head and just ignore him. LOL

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I got in trouble with the race steward a couple of time during the weekend... and Charley warned me that I would! They had to remind me - nicely - that I was in YELLOW PANTS GROUP.... in one session I was "making people nervous".... Okay -- I get that.... some of these guys/gals were on track doing about 40 in the straights... Here I come around the corner and its "punch it! I know the road"! (LOL).... and I go flying by them WOT.... I needed to "tip toe" around them... My bad! I forgot I was on a track... you know - for race cars.... BUT they were RIGHT..... I was still in the YELLOW PANTS and GREEN HARNESS group... ^^^^^^ Not sure how I'd move up to Red group.... unless I could show that I can drive accordingly... and the Red group ain't doing 40 in the straights... And the steward did ask me to move up if I wanted to -- I just was having too much fun in Yellow because I had the track to myself a lot of the time... and could spend more time on the line - and braking - and shifting etc without "traffic". My final session I did an off road at Stielow corner... all four in the dirt... Turn 5 sweeping right and is the down hill side of 5A which is an uphill hard left with a downhill blind right... After a dicing drive with an instructor in his late model Mustang... he came over to me at the beginning of this session and gave me some pointers about where I should place my tires on a couple of the turns to gain time... He wanted me to be more to the right side of the track on 5 after clipping 5A... (I was taking it more to the middle).... So I tried to come off 5A "straighter" to clip the curb on 5... EXCEPT I put the right front in the dirt.... which grabbed and brought the ass around and rather than spin - I straightened her up and just cut the corner rather than try to gather it up. They had actually talked about that in the driver meeting -- to not try to do any "heroics" once you're in the dirt.... and I remembered that -- and it worked... The dirt is very soft -- and once I felt the ass get loose - I just straightened it out and cut the corner - got back on track - slowed down - cleaned the tires around the next couple turns.... THEN I got black flagged (again)... and had to come in and explain myself and rightly so. |
Keep in mind that the trailor tires will get hot during transit so they probably exceeded the 80 lbs if you put 80 lbs into them to start with.
Great job on the track btw!! |
80 psi. Holy crap batman. That must have a had a eventful blowout. Did it damage the trailer fender?

Thanks for the kudos -- I sure had fun! |

Ummmmmm..... it got my attention.... like a cannon going off! And I'm an internationally licensed pyro --- so I've heard my fair share of explosions! This thread is worthless without pictures...... :D http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/IMG_1546.jpg |
Just for clarity of the situation --- those tires have MANY MANY long distance trips -- as in Scottsdale and back to Seattle several times -- LA and back several times - So it isn't the air pressure that "suddenly" blew the tread off TWO tires on the same trip.... my guess it DELAMINATING.... since both tires suffered the exact "tread loss"....Neither tire blew out the sidewall....
Just FYI -- Load range "E" tires are 80# cold max pressure --- you can have the same size tire with a lower load range rating and it will have a lower max pressure. http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/IMG_1541.jpg |
You are a scream. Glad your safe.

lets move this out of the for sale section.

All the threads - to me - are just like a bunch of guys hanging out in "the shed" - the conversations wind around just like a race track... I've shown that staying on track is difficult for me! HA! |

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ To let the farts out.....

I don't know Greg, looks like you've been doing donuts with the trailer again haven't you.

I found of video of Charley doing a track day.... One of these days I want to grow up and be just like him!!!

You were "close" Charley -- but the dyno sheet shows just a slightly elevated level of horses under the hood.... :unibrow: http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/SCAN0005.jpg |

Forty nine lbs of oil pressure at 7500 rpm. :_paranoid :unibrow:

That is a BEAST! What is the rev limiter set at?

Engine builder says 50 #'s is all we need -- and that with a roller cam and RedLine synthetic oil (straight 40wt) she's good to go.... I told him "my rule" which I learned along time ago re: 10#'s per 1000 rpms -- and he just laughed and said "yeah - but that's at what bearing clearances and blah blah blah...." I'll take his word for it. |
Must be the car that I kept that is 520 hp...You owe me more dough. Now if we can just keep the Tasmanian Devil from killing himself before he learns how to handle that much car properly on the track. He has already spun it more time than I ever did.
|
I was just looking for a rise out of you and everybody else.:D My engine builder would agree. The whole 10lbs per thousand rpm is old news. That all started with Smokey Yunick way back when. I will say that your oil temp was only 205 and racing temps may net you less. I just switched to Red Line so I'm not sure how it's viscosity drops off from 205 to say 230-250 in oil temp. I know my Brad Penn partial synthetic dropped 10 psi from 210 oil temp to 230-250. I'm changing my oil cooler and oil for a reason. I'd take a look next time out to see if you should change to a 50 weight. I 'm running 15w-50. These race engine builder like to build them loose to cool the bearings. That baby is a high winding haas.
|
The engine builder actually helped Redline in the development of the 40wt oil. Tony Oddo is considered about as good as it gets out here in the West. They build everything from spec Winston west engines to most good long lasting vintage race engines. I would not change to 50wt.
|
It depends on oil temperature. Tony is happy with 50 but is he happy with 43 when it's 90 degrees out and oil temps rise? My point, monitor your SPECIFIC application and call your engine builder. They want to hear from you and THEY make the call. To many guys just wing it and it costs them. I know Weld has more money than Donald Trump but playing ring around the rosey with engines isn't my idea of a spring picnic.
|
I called the engine builder TWICE today ---- he probably has blocked my number now....
He told me to just run straight 40wt RedLine.... and that IF I was going to wing the motor to 7500 all the time that it should be looked at after 40 hours of engine time. I told him I was holding it to 6000 on the straight and he said - oh h*** you won't need to look at it for a long time then. Charley made all the right choices when this was built - it's got Titanium valves, locks, and retainers... solid roller cam (.650 lift - 258*@.050 intake and 263*@.050 ext - 108 LSA)... it revs so quickly that you have to be a little careful on the gas pedal! I've had a few motors -- and this is my favorite. It's a rowdy little guy... and I love it. :theresa: |
Congrats on your new toy....."Poverty is owning a race car" And it never felt soooooooo good to be poor Enjoy it!!
BTW I used to buzz 8200 in my race car with 55-60# oil pressure. I run Red Line Race Weight 30 and she is still alive after 6 years |

It HAD an 8000 chip in the MSD box -- I changed it to 7000... :_paranoid That tasmanian devil made me do it! :D |

The amount of 110 I pumped in this thing over the weekend was amazing to me... And Charley has me ordering up a new Renegade toter home and stacker trailer... :unibrow: Glad to hear you're motor is still going strong. I know that the old rule of thumb is/was just that... because it's one of those things that just all "depends". Clearances - temps - oil weight etc. As long as the builder is fine with that pressure I can sleep with it. |
When I first saw the for sale post I thought "Ya, Greg SHOULD buy this car." Now the thread title's changed and I realize you've already bought it and had it out on track! NICE!!
