When you open the door, there is kind of critical clearance as it swings inside the front fender. I think this is especially pronounced on a car that has a distinct character line in the door like the Mustangs.

It might seem like a dumb question (and can probably only b answered by experimentation) but when you widen the doors like that, do you guys think that the hinges would need to be offset the same 2" off the body as well, to maintain the normal arc of the door ?

I've studied every picture on Eckert's site and none show the modified door without the front fender on, so I can't tell if they had to move the hinge.

They didn't answer my email but I don't blame them I wouldn't waste my time giving away secrets to fanboi emails either !

Preston, I do not think you have to modify the hinges as long as the fender is moded accordingly. Not that I have done this myself but I have a buddy that used to do a lot of ricers and did ths all the time and I know for a fact that he didn't change anything to the hinges or to the pillar. The inside of te fender area has to be moded for sure but maybe Roger will chime in as he HAS done this before!

That mustang is one of the sickest builds I have ever seen. I'm now making plans to go, ( dumb )question Is there going to be any auto crossing on sema grounds and as far as optima can any one attend ( to watch )?

#1 -- You can't just go and buy a ticket to get in... You must be a part of the industry - have a company that is in the industry or somehow be connected.

#2 -- There is no auto crossing on SEMA grounds -- there are some drifting demonstrations done by pros such as Ken Block

#3 -- You have to buy a ticket to the OUSCI... Go to Optima Battery website and pay to get one. Then you have to get to and from the track in Pahrump (40 some miles or so from Las Vegas). Anyone that has paid for a ticket (limited!) can go to OUSCI.

frankv11 10-08-2012 09:53 PM

Tickets to sema are no problem, the optima are the ones I need, thanks for the info!!!

They usually have a small booth with no cars.

preston 10-16-2012 12:47 PM

For those of you who love the Ford GT40 Mustang as I do you might like to know they have semi-assembled/painted pictures up now near the bottom of this massive photo page

http://www.eckertsrodandcustom.com/projects_mustang.php

Looking good. I usually like simple single tone paint jobs and I usually like silver as well, but after admiring their work I actually hope they put a rocker stripe or some accenting on it - definitely reserving final judgement as the bumper is not even mounted we'll wait until its done. Well, okay, my final judgement is pretty likely to be "TOTALLY AWESOME" regardless. REally looking forward to seeing the interior as well which hasn't been shown anywhere near finished state yet.

BTW, I might be the only person on this thread to care, but I cut one of my extra doors in half ('67 Mustang) and widened it 2" and mounted it to the normal hinges, and it didn't seem to have any problem with interference between the front edge and the trailing edge of the fender when being opened, so I guess the guy who posted an answer for me is right, it doesn't make too much of a difference.

Al Moreno 10-16-2012 01:35 PM

Hey Preston, thanks for posting. I'm sure in person, that things is going to be mind blowing. Sometime is hard to capture the essence of the car in pictures.

Good example ids G-Force Cuda. When I see it in pictures, it almost looks to me like an early 70's funny car the way the body rakes. But when I see it in person, all I can saw is, WOW! That thing is beautiful.

Anyways, can't wait to see it in person.

Come to think of it, I could have told you that. Dang  I added an inch and some change to the front of my '65 Mustang's doors, and didn't have to move the hinges. I will say, it does get trickier the more exaggerated a body line is as it runs across the door. If the angles are sharp, things might want to hit, or if add so much metal that it would hit the inner structure of the fender, then you would run into problems.

Now, back to the GT40 Mustang! I even dig the wheels. I think they capture "contemporary-retro" look, i.e. when I see them I don't just think of the original design blown up to 18."

Matt

Every once in a while, I get this dumb idea in my head that I'm getting older and outgrowing this stuff - then I stumble into a thread like this, like a crackhead wandering into a crack house, and realize that once an addict, always an addict. :willy: :_paranoid

Also didn't help that Hotel California comes on (earphones on lost in my own world, in my office) just as I was getting to the build pics of that Mustang).

How did I miss this? I spent a couple hours going through all the build images. Absolutely amazing fabrication work! WOW!

Love the car, a little soft on the wheels. Maybe same style with a smaller hub would work. It's difficult to go with the Halibrand style wheels, without coming off as too much of a ford GT GT40 look.

Not an easy decision, but it looks &*))%$* amazing! Congratulations!
