Hey guys thanks for al the positive feed back. All three of the boys are working hard to get the car done. If there's no unforeseen challenges comes up, G5.R should be in the main hall at SEMA.

Here are a couple of pics of the front sub mocked up.

Thanks John, here are a few more.

I am replacing the SS rear lower control arms with the updated ZL1s. This will allow me to run Pfadt Racing new ZL1 bars. While I'm waiting for the bars, I felt the GM arms just weren't up to par.

You can see in this picture where the lines are all jagged. I used the blue pin striping tape to outline the amount being removed.

You can see it was also covered with splatter.

And had these machine markings on the sides.

Well, after some sanding and some more sanding, we got them smooth.

Here's a quick comparison of before and after. You can see it's now more symmetrical.

Perhaps the fabricators on here can help me with this one.

This is the rear trailing arms package I will be using from Pfadt Racing.

I was toying with the idea of making some cut outs on the control arms to replicate the Pfadt pieces. I did this quick deal to get an idea.

My concern is I don't want to weaken them to where they will flex. One idea is to box them or perhaps create filler pieces for the cut out. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

What you can do is have an over lay piece with the shape and designs laser cut into it then weld these pieces to the existing uncut arms. You can even inlay carbon fiber into the recessed areas. Similar to this bell crank we did.
Might be time consuming to do. Also increase the weight of the part.

I think this is a Ridler contender..... Well.... it might be if it wasn't a late model.

AL --- Is this YOUR car?? I don't remember the beginning details and am too lazy to run back through the thread.

The textures - the color changes - the detail - is just over the top Kool.

coolwelder62 03-13-2013 06:18 AM

The level of detail is amazing.

Thanks guys for the props.

Though I post a few update pics of Nathan project..

Pick up a new Hammerhead from DSS. This is a bullet proof piece as it will handle 1,400 HP.

But as you can see the casting is really rough.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...ps895d4f73.jpg

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...ps811da130.jpg

So the boys went at it.

Once it was completely smooth, it was blasted.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...ps63351014.jpg

Next it was ultrasonically clean to make sure there no left over residue.

Finaly product.

The lid got the same treatment.

The section were the bushing mount were polishing for some contrast. The piece was powder coated texture black (sorry no pics).

This is a Flex-a-lite radiator for Gen 5 that was going to go in the car but decide to sell and have a new radiator custom made because new radiator will be tuck under the core were you wont see it. Before selling this one, the boys decided to give it a little love. They painted the radiator black and polished the fins on the tanks and brushed between each one.

A True Blessing

Al,

What Nathan and your sons have done with this build is amazing and the accolades given are well deserved!

As a father of college age kids I think there is a more impressive, more important manifestation in this build. You, Al should be so proud that you have raised the boys (not sure how many children you have) to be so grounded, patient and thankful for what they have and what they can accomplish. In a time of instant gratification, entitlement and "buying" the best, video games etc... your sons are taking the road less travelled in this generation. This is a huge complement to you and your family. Rare is the teenager or twenty something that will take the time, dedication and focus (and the work done requires a lot of each!) to accomplish such an amazing goal and product, one small step at a time.

You should be proud and the boys should be also. Your family exemplifies what has made this country great and seeing this continues to reinforce the good that is out there.

Sincerely
Peter

We are putting him the the Moreno boot-camp. Makes thing a little interesting when you call out for Justin, LOL. The two oldest are now in college and the other two are still being home school.

Ask and you shall receive

Just received all new replacement glass from Optic Armor. This is really neat stuff as its 50% lighter than OEM and 250% stronger. I didn't realize that this is the same stuff Ring Brothers use on some of their build. The other benefit is that your losing the weight from the top lowering the center of gravity.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...pse989f49e.jpg

The boys have been working hard at getting rid of as much weight as possible. The goal is now 500 lbs which will bring the car into the 3,300 lbs range with 650 HP should make for a fun ride.

They were cutting out the bath tub in the trunk this last weekend to create a flat floor.

I guess they could have just stripped it and acid dipped the car. It may have saved them some time with the insulation and seam sealer.

Cool project. Thanks for the updates. Is that a 2/3 car garage?

Thanks Rick, I definitely proud.

In the spirit of ridding as much weight as possible, the rear seat will be deleted and the two front seats are being replace with Cobra's Misano edition. These are only 24 lbs vs OEM are about 100 combined. Cobra will be embroidering the G5.R logo on the seats.

Here is an update from my son Justin

Pfadt Trailing Arms and Tie rods came in a few days ago. Man they look good in their raw form. looks very racey and mechanical.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...pse539ed26.jpg

Attachment 39613

We almost decided to keep them like that. But to keep with the theme, we started monkeying with them. I took a pic of them side by side, polished and brushed. We both agreed that we like the brushed look better.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...ps04557543.jpg

Here is a pic of the new custom flex-a-lite radiator with our custom fan shroud mounted on it.

Attachment 39612

the first fan shroud we made had some incorrect measurements. Made another one, and measurements were still wrong .... As the saying goes, third times a charm, and thus the third shroud finally fits perfectly. On Monday I'll get the fan mounts welded to the shroud, and call it done for now. we need to test fit it in the engine bay to make a bracket for the rad to mount to. Once that's done, we'll powder-coat the shroud.

Rick D 06-01-2013 04:45 AM

Man Al your not kidding those arms do look racy for sure, and I would agree on the brushed look for sure!!

Attachment 39726

The original bumper was sacrifice as template in order to make a ZL1 carbon fiber diffuser. The black replacement looks kinda cool with against the white and carbon.

Attachment 39727

Many of the bolts are going to get drilled for safety wire.

I have got to say that this thing looks pretty sinister for a 5th Gen

Ordered the brakes yesterday. They are StopTech's Trophy series which are 20% that their next level up.

Thanks Marty for the props!

I also has to give props to Cris from JCG! He took 3 hours of his time Saturday morning to the boys and I come by. He reviewed the progress of the project and what still needs to get done to complete it by SEMA. He gave the boys realistic advice and gave them a game plan. In addition, he is going to help them with some custom pieces to take the project to the next level. Some of the stuff will cross pollinate with first gen, so stay tuned.

The attention to detail of what Cris does is just at another level. Check out this neat replacement check valve for the master. It replaced the ugly plastic piece with this piece of functional art! He will also be doing a billet replacement reservoir tank for the master with a built in separate reservoir for the trans.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0ccd029c.jpg

The amount of engineering that went just into this little piece is amazing.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...psde5a7ed1.jpg

Thanks again Cris for all the help!

Al

syborg tt 07-01-2013 06:01 AM

Chris is one of the Nice guys in this industry. He loves what he does and is more then happy to help others. Heck I called him and asked him if I could borrow his wheel tool that Mario had and without even taking a second to think about it he said sure no problem. Chris only knows me from this board and yes I have bought a few things from him. But to lend a $2500.00 tool to a stranger from Chicago say's a lot about his character.

I look forward to all of the post from JCG on this BB & on Facebook. He does some outstanding work and the best part he finishes his customer cars and doesn't break their bank.

ps looks like I am going to be ordering up this check valve for my car.
