Tom,
Your new shop is looking great! We are getting ready to move down to southern Indiana here in the next couple months. Will be building a new house and a shop. I would love to stop in and get a peek at your place sometime if that would be possible? I have been watching you project and really like what you have done. Would like to see it in person to get a size perspective.

Good luck on getting it finished!

You're always welcome here, we love company! I'll PM my contact info.
Tom

The new shed is awesome Tommy. It's quite the project -- and you appear to have a good handle on it now.

I don't need to tell you -- that getting that first piece of metal roofing "square" is critical. If it's off just a bit - by the time you get to the far end -- it's a big OOPS! LOL

Thanks Greg! Working on the shop is a nice change of pace from turning wrenches and we're enjoying the build. We'll be careful with the metal roofing for sure. It's tough going from a product like wood that has some give and is never perfect to start with to product like metal that is "true". Others have done it and made it look good from the ground, so I am confident we can too.

Tom, there's a caulking product called geocell will stick and seal to any clean metal surface.I used it to help seal around my wood stove chimmey gasket.

Here's a picture of what has been going on with the shop build all winter... I'll have some more exciting pictures to come within a day or two. I promise!

GregWeld 02-13-2014 05:51 AM

I now have a better understanding of what builders call getting a building "wintered in". Your's has been wintered in! HAHAHAHAHA

Today is going to be the first day with a temperature above 32 degrees here in KC since January 30th, and I assume that weather is headed East toward Tommy...

Still gonna take a while to melt the snowpack off here...and there though.

waynieZ 02-13-2014 10:01 AM

Tom Where is the old shop located? Is it on your property? The new shop is going to be awesome.
How do you like that Atlas lift?

tommycomfort 02-13-2014 06:31 PM

So, the big news is that we made the decision about a month ago to pay a contractor to finish the roof. Of course the plan would be that he came right away and seal it up, but snow, high winds and sub zero weather has kept them away until yesterday. Two days and these cats are done! Sam, Deb and I had it down to 30 minutes per sheet and with 44 left, simple math told us it would take us 22 hours. Sadly, Deb and I both have a couple of jobs and Sam has school and parents with lots of projects. We hate to spend money on stuff we can do ourselves, but man it feels good to not worry about shoveling snow out of there anymore!

Yesterday's progress
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps934a3f76.jpg

When I got home from work this morning it was 8 degrees and they already had their first sheet up.

Wayne, our old place was about thirty minutes away where we had owned a rental home. The new place is maybe just over 100' from the front door of our house. :ohsnap:

The Atlas lift served us well and we plan to buy another one with more height and lifting capacity for the new shop.

WOW!!!! thats all i can say, i have some serious shed envy, cant wait to see some more pictures, i dream of having something like this one day, i have easily enough land but due to living in a national park with strict fire regulations makes it hard.

Best of luck and looking forward to more updates.

Those metal roofs make a nice looking building.

tommycomfort 02-20-2014 07:42 AM

Had a great weather day yesterday and was able to get a few things done along with drying things out inside.

South side window installed. Not sure how exciting the picture is, but progress is progress.
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...psdae7ddbf.jpg

North side window installed and porch roof covered in metal. The porch will get 4x4" posts once the ground thaws.

Service door installed.

Always good to see progress Tommy! It's going to be a great "shed" as my Mother in Law would call it.

Thanks Greg, it sure feels good to make some progress.

More progress. Wrapped the garage door opening in southern yellow pine 2x8" and 2x6" inside to mount the garage door tracks to. Paying a pro to install the door on Friday.

tommycomfort 03-23-2014 04:45 AM

This actually happened about two weeks ago but things have been hectic and am just now getting around the posting the pictures. The shop is going slow, but we have started wiring and the metal siding is on order. We would really like to have the wiring done and things powered up by the first weekend in May in case anyone comes by during the Midwest Musclecar Challenge.

Man I hope everyone comes by. If we could find a local spot for an autocross we could do a cookout here.

TimeWarpF100 03-23-2014 10:11 AM

Not sure how I missed this thread!

Absolutely wonderful shop Tom.

I can only dream of having that much shop space, I really like the setup.

I thought the back 40 was getting blacktopped for the auto x.

HectorM52 03-23-2014 07:21 PM

Tom, any thought to having the garage door track raised a foot or so? That would give a little more headroom at the door as well as more room at the opener...

Just a quick observation.

Shop looks great, though. Doing the construction right from what I can tell.

tommycomfort 05-09-2014 06:26 PM

Not much going on with the shop lately. We've been busy getting the cars ready for events. I was able to get the pad formed up in front of the garage door and now just need to wait on the concrete guy. We hauled in pea gravel in the new truck. First load 4300 pounds, second load 7600 pounds. That's why we bought a one ton truck....

Well, we may not have siding, but ours is filling up quick. I wish I had a fleet of mules (Sams) to rent out, I could retire!

tommycomfort 02-14-2015 09:54 AM

Just like all our build threads we are long overdue for an update! Funny thing, the busier you get working on things the less time it seems you have to take pictures and update stuff. I've gotten lazy and often just do a quick facebook post from my camera phone...

The building inspector came out to do a rough electrical inspection and gave me a short list of things he wanted to see done before final inspection. A step outside the door was one of them so we knocked out a small deck.
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...psedcf841e.jpg

Huge day came when electric was installed! For almost a year we used six 12-3 100' extension cords to bring three circuits into the shop.
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps99dfdbb8.jpg

With the help of Sam and my father-in-law we installed our new 10K lift over Thanksgiving weekend.
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps10889c6f.jpg

Knowing siding was coming eventually we wanted to get the "canopy" area completed.
