So glad to hear you're enjoying the car. It's a sweet build. Good luck with the upgrades!

I bet that will sound superb when all hooked up. The Spintechs really do line up with the other ones, should be an easy enough swap. Can't wait to hear that thing.

Frankenstine 05-28-2015 07:02 AM

Congrats

Congrats Neil, hope you will do a walk around Vid with this beast running with the Spin Tech's or a drive by Vid ?

Will do. Still waitin' on parts and I'm out of town for work for until mid-June.

I finally got the 3" exhaust system bolted up today. The fit of the system is excellent and was a 100% bolt-on effort. No cutting, no drilling, no welding. All I did was dress the ends of the pipes and expand a few of the joints a bit. It basically fell into place. I still need to take a drive and final align the clamps. I'm still debating whether or not to put a 45 degree cut on the tailpipe exit. Nice work Hooker!

Yes, 45s I think Neil. Also, we need a sound clip with those spintechs and 3 inchers!

Edit: what are those bushings?

Sound clips to follow! The bushings are the Hooker-supplied tailpipe hangers/isolators. Everything bolts up to existing holes which was a requirement for my build.

Spintech is a great choice for that engine Neil. Can't wait to hear it sing.

And for your car and theme I would leave the tips as is. Looks great.

Ahh, roger that. Subframe connectors in your future or did I miss them?

I've agonized over this. I really, really don't want to drill or weld on the car. I don't plan to launch the car or put sticky tires on it, but some type of additional structure under there sure would be nice. I've seen some cars start to crack where the rear quarter meets the roof at the corner of the side window, and I don't want this to happen on mine.

On my last 68 with 425hp the whole car would torque twist off the line. Check out Hotchkis or Global West. Pretty sure those are minimally invasive.

I got everything tidied up last night. I'm really happy with how this turned out for a bolt-on system. I promise at least some cold start idle video later today.

Here's a couple quick cell phone videos of the car warming up. It doesn't do the sound of the car justice. The Spin Tech's are definitely not for the faint of heart.

LOL. I'll get some more footage soon, but my neighbors needed a break yesterday.

OLDFLM 07-20-2015 07:20 AM

45*

Sounds great! What did you decide about the tailpipes?

I vote for the 45* cut even with the bottom of the quarter...

I'm still not sure. I wanted to get better clearances on the left side tailpipe, so I made a bracket to relocate it a bit. Moving the tailpipe affects the tip angles, so I want to lock down the tailpipe positioning before I cut anything. I park my daily driver under the Camaro on the lift so the tailpipes are front and center every time I come and go from the garage. This would be soooo much easier if I were willing to drill new holes in the car. LOL.

Still waiting for some dry roads, but I thought this was an interesting comparison:

Engine 1: DZ302, 11:1 compression, 170cc heads, 248/[email protected] solid flat tappet, 1 3/4 headers, 2.5" exhaust with h-pipe, Flowmaster 80 series cross-flow muffler.

https://youtu.be/G99ba3B7sWs

Engine 2: DZ372, 14:1 compression, 218cc heads, 268/[email protected] solid roller, 1 3/4 headers, 3" exhaust with x-pipe, SpinTech mufflers.

https://youtu.be/z1JLqpJwVyE

The new motor is definitely louder in real life, but to me they sound nearly the same even though every single part from carb to tailpipe has been changed.

They both sound Sweet!
