SIEG,

Good thing you posted Pinkee's truck in that "grouping" or I'd have to unfriend you.

Payton King 07-11-2014 07:31 AM

Well are you not the Rock Star...5 pages on a project with one picture.

For a second there I thought Steilow had started another thread. Where is the "leg humper" icon when you need it. LOL

All kidding aside, glad you posted this up. I have been wanting to do the same thing with a 1960 caddy convertible. Maybe I can learn something watching this build. Just make sure you nail down the wheel base before you get started.

Payton,

6 Pages BTW ---- but who's counting.

So YESTERDAY I got an email from a guy I've known for a long time -- who's built many many hot rods -- inviting me over to his house to see the '40 Ford pickup he's building. Why? Because he's short like I am --- and he's STRETCHING his cab and thought I should sit in it before I get started.

I thought that's why people stretched their wheelbase -- in order to fit in the car?? Oh.... well maybe not apparently. LOL

He's also using an LS motor.

Here's a cut and paste from his email:

Even for us short guys, these trucks can be a little cramped. I have extended the cab two inches and recessed the firewall 1 3/4" to make room for an ls engine with a front runner system. Every thing else pretty straight forward. Superide in front and 9" in rear with 4-bar and c/o.

Did I say I liked any of them? :action-smiley-027: Though there are styling cues with each that could spark ideas.

GregWeld 07-11-2014 08:05 AM

Here are a couple photos that are "inspirational" for this build --- and I'm torn between the super simple "patina" or painted old skool styles....

This is the truck I could have started with - as Eric and I agreed on a price for it --- but I would throw all of it away -- and just use the body. It's chopped 2"... and even buying the clapped out body and chopping it and it's repair works out to be less costly than buying this one. So Eric found and acquired the one from Wyoming.

DBasher 07-11-2014 08:23 AM

I like the front of Eric's truck, the earlier lights and less bullnose on the hood look good.

Curios to see the interior you come up with, I get what you're saying just can't picture it....well, I can picture it but it doesn't look good!

GWEN likes this one.....

I don't care for some of the details -- like the stupid looking radiator.... or the old skool mags.... but I do like the general look.

Overall this one is in my Top 5 out of the hundreds I've looked at now (exceptions as noted).......fwiw.

Though Stella would probably appreciate suicide doors as they are very K9 friendly. :D

It looks simple, but done nicely with a little hot rod touch. The only thing that I'd like to see is the headlight rings to be chrome. I'm not sure about the painted trim around the headlights.

either way looks good, would be nice to see a one piece front windshield, you said you were going to flush mount the glass did you not?

Yeah - I'm thinking one piece windshield -- flush mount - in the interest of non-leaking - simple looking - cleanliness.

I wanted to build this myself at my new shop - but realized that with building a new house over there - and the lack of "hot rod friends" that might be a real struggle. I don't have the resources over there -- buddies to just call and say "come help me with...." etc. And I want this done within the next 18 months or so.

I'm having Pinkee's Rod Shop build this project because he has the talent and taste that is what I'm after for this particular build. I'm building this as a daily driver for Sun Valley where the average speed is about 20 MPH. But I want to be able to drive it to Costco in Twin Falls or to Boise or wherever... so that's the way it's going to be planned. No bling - nothing fancy - just drive it rain or shine.

The goal is to have perfectly straight body - perfect gaps - flush windows - air tight - rattle free... easy to drive... great A/C and heat including heated seats.

The Roadster Shop chassis. Ford 9" on triangulated 4 link - coil overs front and back. 9" or 10" rear wheel... Wilwood simple brakes two piston front single rear... auto overdrive tranny... crate LS3 or SBF (maybe a Roush motor). EFI. Patina paint - but Gwen likes paint - so maybe a pale green (old skool color) or tan...

I'm talking to Eric (owner of Pinkee's) about bead rolling details into an all metal "trunk" and painting it like it's old tattered canvas covered and leather... and mounting this in the bed so I can have dry secure storage for groceries or luggage etc for road trips. Right now this is just an "idea".

I've asked Tracy of The Recovery Room - to come up with a "quality" version of "early horse blanket" for the interior. Not sure what that means but we'll figure out something. I think Gwen is going to have her hand in the details now that she's become an official hot rodder. For the first time EVER she was walking around the Pomona FairPlex looking at cars and telling me what colors she likes and which cars she liked and didn't.... and her tastes are an exact match to mine. Where we differed was on the paint scheme -- she wants old skool real paint - and I was thinking pure patina...

Here is what we're starting with - a body found in Wyoming by Pinkee's.

Send the jet to pick me up in Vacaville. I can lend a hand!!

f the jet... get to the choppa

DBasher 07-11-2014 03:53 PM

Did you sit in Eric's shop truck? That mild chop looks real nice, proportioned to the rig and all. It looks like the green one Gwen likes has the same amount taken out.

I'm not sayin you're a tiny little man or anything but I can't imagine you'd be cramped with the right seating position and a mild chop. Besides, it just looks better.

Just no!

I don't want a rat rod -- I want a nice daily driver that I can be proud of. Rat rods are for 20 year olds.

Rat Rods don't have $10.000 interiors, $40.000 worth of suspension and $25.000 worth of engine under them :mock:

bonecrrusher 07-11-2014 07:04 PM

Your not 20? :sieg:

waynieZ 07-11-2014 07:42 PM

Wow I'm tiered I just went through all of this thread. glad you decided to do a build thread on here. I love the 40 Ford front end on both the cars and trucks, and Kind of fond of those chevron tail lights too.
I like tem done both ways patina and old school paint. A good color choice and you can't loose either way. In patina I like the warn out signage on the door, it just fits!
I wish I could get my wife interested in cars but the only time she comes in the garage it to tell me its a mess and it needs cleaning!! She's a trooper going to car shows and swap meets with me but she just tolerates them not really interested.

I'm a hot rod guy --- and I've already blown thru the Corvettes and Camaro craze. I put Chevy's in my Fords.

GregWeld 07-12-2014 07:02 AM

Todd ---

Let's really get down to the nitty gritty....

How many track days have some of us run.... and cars completed... and shows attended.... :bang:

Charley does more car stuff in a month than I do in a year...

GregWeld 07-12-2014 08:41 AM

This is the front end that will be ordered on The Roadster Shop '40 Ford Chassis....

That should do the trick!

Lol

Greg,

What steering rack is that?

Che70velle 07-12-2014 07:47 PM

That's ironic. I have a PortCity asphalt chassis in my shop standing on its bottom, against the wall, in the same position as yours...

Great way to store them out of the way.... and with that chain hoist -- I can put it up or down one handed! People are always freaked out when they see it...
